Serge Krieger That may be true but in the end the Free Dacians, thanks to their Sarmatian/Germanic allies (especially the Goths) were able to force the Romans out of Dacia in 275 after a long & brutal insurgency. Speaking of Traian, Parthia was more then he could swallow when he got his ass kicked there & had no choice but to abandon his overzealous ambitions of further conquest.
@histguy101
@histguy101 4 жыл бұрын
@@ash8207 Trajan won a full victory in Parthia and annexed the Territory as a new province. Where did you hear otherwise? His successor Hadrian thought the conquest was foolish, and the huge territory undefendable, so he abandoned much of the new province. They certainly didn't abandon Armenia, Mesopotamia, or Arabia though. These were the frontier for centuries.
@ash8207
@ash8207 4 жыл бұрын
@@histguy101 You make some good points but you're also omitting the not so favorable conclusion of Trajan's campaign in Parthia. Yes it was initially a success but a failure in the end. The Parthians' insurgency eventually forced the Romans out & exposed the unsustainable policy of Trajan's ambitions that exposed Rome's inability to maintain or expand their empire after Trajan died of illness. The historical sources show that clearly..."Aware that the Parthian campaign was an enormous setback, and that it revealed that the Roman Empire had no means for an ambitious program of conquests, Hadrian's first act as emperor was to abandon - outwardly out of his own free will - the distant and indefensible Mesopotamia and to restore Armenia, as well as Osrhoene, to the Parthian hegemony under Roman suzerainty." Not exactly a glorious or successful end to the Parthian saga. Also if you skip to minute 39 of this historical documentary, it's obvious that Trajan's ambitious campaign of conquest & expansion was only a temporary sucess but ultimately an ignoble failure, which even his successor Hadrian immediately recognized...kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcCkarqrmZnDf4E.html

While it may have been true that Rome was at war somewhere in its gigantic empire at any given time, there were large areas in which peace reigned for decades or even centuries, far longer than ever before or afterwards in their history. The Pax Romana was indeed a fact of life for generations of citizens and non- citizens of the Roman empire.

The term "century" (100) seems to be somewhat misleading, considering that it comprised 80 fighting men (legionaries). However, in reality a century comprised ten squads of contubernii, each with 8 men PLUS one recruit (Tiro) in training, and one servant (Calo) for the contubernium = tent squad, led by a Decanus (one of the 8 men). This of course amounts to 80 legionaries, plus10 Tirones and 10 Calones = 100 men per century, hence its name. The recruits and servants would usually defend the camp when the legion deployed for battle.

I'm sorry, but that's not true. The word Barbarian comes from the Greek Barbaros, and it referred to anyone who didn't speak Greek. The Romans adopted the same word and used it more or less the same, or different ways in different contexts. Barbarians could be non Greek or Latin speakers, or they could be provincials, or noncitizen provincials, and definitely anyone outside the borders. Also, the Romans were not all clean shaven. In fact, every emperor between Trajan and Constantine kept a nice thick beard(like Antoninus Pius, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus, Commodus, Septimius Severus, Caracalla, Phillip, Decius, Aurelian, Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius, et al wore beautiful burly beards).

Dacians were a tribe that lived north of the Danube, north of Moesia, which is north of Thrace. What do you want to know?! They uhh... Lived there. The Romans conquered much if Dacian territory in the early second century, annexed it as a province, which was very wealthy and became Romanized. The province was semi-abandoned in the late 3rd(Legions left) century. Goths migrated into the region around the same time. The province was briefly reconquered by Constantine in the 320s and 330s. There were several more campaigns there throughout the fourth century. The Goths moved en masse(all men, women, and children) south of the Danube throughout the 4th and 5th century. Dacia was overrun by Huns, Slavs, Avars, Bulgars, and others, in successive wavesthen Bulgars in the 7th and 8th. All these various groups, along with the natives, along with any Romans who settled there, make up the modern nations of Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, and also Hungary, Moldova, to some extent Ukraine. And you could include the more southern Balkan states as well since so many of these tribes settled far south of the Danube.

As an historian passionate it is very strange in all history books documentaries and universities to find writings and so many records only about the Roman achievements, life stile, military power etc and how much they conquered. Now after so many years and not based on books I learned that Romans were very good at destroying evidence and specially of people that were above them or had an advanced culture and if that is the case why out of all people conquered by them they become so abscessed with Dacians? You find today more statues of Dacians than Roman Emperors, why Trajan dedicated 7 years of his life to build the column and detailed their accomplishment and if those Dacian barbarians were so insignificant why display to the world some tribes which are no better than other tribes? Why bring to Rome Dacian clothing and vestments embroidered with traditional Dacian motives which you still see today in Northern Italy, hand made jewelry and necklace exposed in Italian musemus and other parts of the world. The Russians still keeps a huge Dacian treasure created before Rome even existed. After Decebalus was gone why the Romans did not conquered the rest of Thracia which 90% of Daco-Getae groups were still intact. Why Trajan refused to go back and choose other expedition where he got sick and died. Why later on when the Roman Empire was conquered by the Gots which a lot of people claimed to be Germanic tribes does not mention the reality that these Gots were comming from Apuseni mountains in Dacia and in fact where Getae tribes called Gots by the Celts which they had a love hate relationship? We can deny a lot of facts and history books but the old Dacian settlements their 7000 years old cooper mines, the 6000 old salt mines, their 8000 old Thracian culture that spread all over the world it is still there in Romania of today which according to the latest findings shows that most likely they were the first Europeans with the most advanced culture and regardless how much we want to debate, lie or falsify the history the evidence is staring at us.

Very true. Did a lot of research on the Dacians too. Also see the connections between the Daci and the Dahae (tribe east of the Caspian sea and called "Dasa" in Sanskrit, meaning "servants of God"), and the Getae with the Massagetae (also tribe east of the Caspian sea, massagetae meaning "great/big getae"). I believe that the Migration Period of the 4th century was the Massagetae, the Dahae and Goth tribes coming to help the Dacians against the Romans (they're the same people), because it was only after Dacia was annexed that all these tribes came to Europe. The Goths, which the historian Jordanes claimed to be Getae people lived in Denmark. In Latin the Danish people were actually called "Dacos". Also, the Roman people themselves were Thracians/Dacians, it is widely accepted that the Indo Europeans came from the north of the Black Sea (nowadays Moldova/Ukraine).

Well, there were detachments from 12 legions. They can't just pull full legions off the frontiers for a campaign in one corner of the empire. Also, the number of legions is irrelevant, as they were still comparable sized armies. Actually, the Romans may have been outnumbered. How many Legions were needed to conquer Gaul? 6-10? How many Legions to put down the 2nd Jewish revolt? 10! If it can take 10 Legions to put down a revolt in Judea, which had already been depopulated 60 years earlier, then what's wrong with 12 legions for the conquest of Dacia? Lastly, the Goths did not speak the same language as the Dacians. They were not kinsman, although the Goths did settle in Dacia in the 3rd century. Constantine built a bridge across the Danube and achieved victory over both the Dacians and Goths, and thus was granted the title Dacicus, and Gothicus.

Ceramics cannot be dated using carbon, so you are lying. The Tartaria tablets have been dated based on the other object found in that site. But no one can say if they are legit, based on the story of how they were found many say that they are fake. And it's not a writing sistem, like the one in Sumer, it is based on pictograms. If you consider pictograms as writing, you will find that "the oldest writing" was found in China, 1000 years before Tartaria. +Serge Krieger The main reason why the Romans colonized Dacia is because it was economically viable to do so. Hadrian (who was defensive-minded) wanted to withdraw the Roman frontier back to the Danube but all of his advisers argued against that idea, since there were already so many Roman colonists in Dacia. Also, the Dacians weren't your average barbarians; they were not "poor bastards" as you say. All of the evidence points towards a culture which was slightly more advanced than the Germanic tribes. The Dacian gold plundered during Trajan's campaigns funded building projects in Rome which is responsible for a majority of the ancient monuments that we see in Rome today.
@ash8207

+The Libertine The Dacians weren't your average barbarians ? No, they actually weren't barbarians at all. Unless you are referring to the original Greek meaning of "barbarian" meaning foreign or non-Greek, then yes they were "barbarians" ie. non-Greek. Their golden bracelets & other exquisite jewelry are a testament to the fact that they were more than just "slightly more advanced" than the Germanic tribes. Not to mention that Sarmizegetusa Regia, their capital contained a very accurate calendar for its time. The Dacians were also respected in the ancient world for their metal craftsmanship, medicinal studies, spirituality, fighting spirit and other notable attributes taught to them by the legendary Zalmoxis & Deceneu. Their culture is recorded by some of the most famous Greek & even Roman historians & writers as one of the most enlightened & developed. Their main defect was that they were very independent & divided, as Herodotus mentions. That led to the assassination of Burebista & later Decebal's downfall unfortunately. But you are correct about Hadrian & the gold being plundered to finance Traian's projects. Also it saved Rome from economic collapse. By the way, excuse me for saying this but I find it very odd, cowardly & insincere when you brand people "dacopats" or "dacomaniacs" simply because they point out documented facts & objective observations about the Romans and the Dacians. It's a shame really because here you seem to make good, valid points and yet other times you resort to baseless & immature character attacks against folks who aren't infatuated with Rome or point out things about the Dacians. When & how did we come to this point, where people interested in Dacian history are just mindlessly branded as having a "mental disorder" ? I just find that so arrogant & pretentious. Plus it's totally unnecessary & detrimental to the debate. You are welcome to argue, debate & disagree, but let's do it like normal intelligent people...with facts, evidence, something substantial. But please don't argue with silly insults, it doesn't prove you right at all. I already erased your earlier non-sense, but I welcome an honest debate with you anytime, if you are capable & willing. Or is it just going to be more inane insults from you ? Hopefully not, but we'll see. Have a nice day !

And then, the Romans, also "latinized" the Free Dacians, the very people that were fighting them in a brutal insurgency to oust them from Dacia. Yeah, ok, whatever. Sorry but this is just a baseless fantasy, a fairy tale that sadly & absurdly has been passed off as the "official history" of Romania.

Dacian Spirit 75 Your entire Dacononsense religion is based on misinterpretations and fabrications of history. as well as a poor grasp of greco-roman mythology. Save me your paragraphs of bullshit. No academic or historian gives Dacomania a second glance. I wonder why (sarcasm). Your crackpot theory has been debunked a long time ago. I don't mean to be this cruel but you really have no idea what you're talking about. So continuing to perpetuate Napoleon Savescu's nonsense just proves your lack of intelligence.

Narrator sad 20:46 "Bay the time they left, Dacia become to be called Romania"😆 Can't possibly be true What a liar In 1859, Wallachia united with Moldavia to form the United Principalities, which adopted the name Romania in 1866 .😃🤮

Wallachia means the land were ROME citizens live and/or were latin speakers live. (civis romanus natus dacus). Wallachia = Terra Romana.

@@peter-df6wl Ofcourse. But only Moldovans changed their country name once they united. As Wallachia already meant Romania.Turks knew Moldavia as Wallachia too. Kara Iflak was called to Wallachia and Ak Iflak or Bogdan Iflak was called to the lands of Moldova. Poland also called Moldova as Vlahia. So the name Romania was already in use for both countries way way way before Union of the two.

@@dacvs301 So Tara Romaneasca land of the Romanians. Wallachians are Romanians. So where the Wallachians come from? What language Wallachians speak? Wo impressive. Romanian the oldest language in Europe, older even than Sanskrit. According to the researchers and scientists, the Latin comes from the old Romanian and not vice versa.👍
