#2 is one of my favorites to narrate because I basically get to go through the healing processes with the characters. I've found that in most of the romances I voice, the "lie" comes from a self-protection strategy due to past abuse, usually the more specific the better.

"The Savior's Champion" by Jenna Moreci has all of these beats down to a science. That's one of the reasons I consider Tobias and Leila one of my all-time favorite pairings. I felt everything they were going through whether it was happy or sad. That just makes me want to read "The Savior's Sister" even more! :)

If you look really closely, I think one of the books in the background *is* the savior's champion.

Erin this is FANTASTIC! I’ve been writing for years and just decided to write Romance. The learning process has been interesting and fun. Your beats really help clarify the Romance genre structure. Thanks so much!

THANK YOU FOR NUMBER TEN cause so many romances do not give us even a *taste* of what that HEA is like... and it is so incredibly frustrating. Another awesome video, I'm gonna have to revisit it when I get back to work on that WIP of mine.

This is a great reference! Have you heard of Gwen Hayes' Romancing the Beat? It's a good read with an '80s soundtrack with each chapter on the romance beats :)

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank youuu! Mmmmuaaaahhh! ❤❤❤❤❤ I've been struggling for some days now to write down the plot for a mafia romance, but I just couldn't even grasp the dynamics of the romance aspect. But as I watched this, I recalled a romance movie I watched recently and EVERY SINGLE STEP you mentioned occured in that movie. I was able to relate perfectly how each beat applies, and how I can now weave the mafia aspect into the romance plot. Thank you once again! Subscribed for life! ❤❤❤

Yeah...I want to write romantic relationships but I am so prudish and scared of romance that the result comes off as a toxic relationship, that is not healthy. But at the same time, I think that destruction is beautiful, in some way.

A q: is there a point in which these beats should happen or does it not matter as long as each is there? Like if I want to take a while between the meet cute and the characters realising their feelings
@Anna-B
@Anna-B 4 жыл бұрын
This is soooo helpfull! Do these beats work if the romance is a prevalent subplot?
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella 4 жыл бұрын
Anna B thank you!! And it would really depend. Usually with subplots you have a bigger overarching conflict so the romance is more often a safe haven for the characters but it’s entirely up to you really

Do romance novels always have a villain? Is he/she the one who keeps them apart?
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella 3 жыл бұрын
Nope they don't all have villains. Just like in other stories you can get conflict from lots of different sources. If there is a villain they don't have to actively separate the lead and love interest either. I've read plenty where the villain (usually in more fantasy leaning stories) is someone the leads work together to overcome and they're a general threat as opposed to someone actively sabotaging the relationship. However, that's not to say that you can't have a villain whose primary goal is to thwart the relationship because those definitely exist as well. The point is that you have a lot of flexibility for how that all plays out and where the conflict is coming from ^__^
@cosmic-fortytwo
@cosmic-fortytwo 3 жыл бұрын
@@ErinKinsella Thank you so much for that reply! I'm an aspiring writer myself and I am interested in writing a romance novel but I want to avoid cliche' and silly tropes. So the thing keeping the lovers apart doesn't have to have an obvious villain like a scheming Jafar thwarting Aladdin and Jasmin's relationship, it could just be a situation, like WWII or 16th century Scottish class rules saying The Laird should never marry his cook. Or the obvious one: Romeo and Juliet being from different and feuding families. Cool. I get it.

Step 5 The Vulnerable Reconciliation didn't make a lot of sense. I wish there could be some examples. This doesn't really fit into my story very well.

I know this video is 3 years old, so I'm hoping someone will still see this. But does this structure still work for dark romance?
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella 8 ай бұрын
I don't see why it wouldn't work for dark romance. The main plot is still going to be centralized around the romance and can follow similar beats.

Is it bad that I want to try writing a romance novel without ever reading one? I am a murder mystery true crime reader and I can’t often find interests in romance but it’s very hard for me to write murder mysteries
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella Жыл бұрын
Uh, yep that's pretty bad XD Romance isn't easier to write than any other genre. Writing books in general is really difficult and every genre comes with its own unique challenges. If you have no interest in romance then I wouldn't recommend trying to write in that genre. There are romance thrillers that combine romance and murder mysteries you could check out and see if you enjoy.
