Square Enix released Romancing SaGa 3 in English for the very first time this week, allowing fans of classic JRPGs, who hadn't relied on the fan translation, to catch up with one of the genre greats.
In this video I take a look at Romancing SaGa 3, and discuss why it - and other retro RPGs, still have a lot to offer, and modern game designers would do well to learn something from them.

One thing I also love about these old school rpgs is their simplistic pixel graphic style leaves a lot up to the players imagination to fill in the gaps. Its much like watching a film vs reading a book.

Yes! This is something I really should have mentioned too. Games these days don't leave anything to the imagination, and that's a loss.

RS3 is just pure gold. Now it can be obtuse at times to find where to go and having a backup guide IS handy but there are plenty available. Go buy it, all! Show Square that us in the west DO have a desire for these games.

One thing I like RS3 more than Octopath Traveller is the ability to recruit side characters.

The retro style games leave more room for the imagination when it comes to the overworld and characters

I've spoken many times about how modern rpgs get too long winded. I remember back when Xenosaga 1 was released. I was so excited for it, but something about it just rubbed me the wrong way. With the transition from 2d to 3d in rpg's, scenes were being acted out with full body movements, facial expression, etc, and end up taking ten minutes to accomplish what 2d would get done in one minute. RPGs were not getting better stories, or becoming more in depth, they were simply getting longer.

Exactly this. Final Fantasy VI is one of the deepest, most philosophical games ever made, and it's a fraction of the length of most modern JRPGs.

Faidou I’m not the world’s biggest fan of Persona 5, no. It’s far too bloated for the story and themes that it’s looking to convey. Persona 4 was a much better (and deeper) effort.

Agreed, Xenosaga had me so hyped but it ended up putting me to sleep many times. Modern Jrpgs are bloated with unnecessary dialogue, technical limitations limited Japanese devs to get to the point. what we get now is a lot of Japanese dialogue tendencies, which simply do not translate well to Western standards.

This is one of my favorites games ever. The main reason is that it’s a fun rpg game to simply play. Elements like story and character development are all simple because the people focused on what’s important in video games, gameplay. The combat never bores me, especially when seeing characters spark new skills. Yeah, it is a hard game, so you have to be a hardcore rpg fan to appreciate this game. But overall, I would recommend this game as a message that not all RPGs need to focus on story or character development. Especially if you act like Persona 3 & beyond where you make a game longer just to show dumb anime stereotypes and less combat action.

RS were not the norm back in the day. Yes SaGa series focused on combat. But other jrpgs? Do you even think that ff6 or Dq6 combat were great or fun? Nah. They were grind focused games based on hitting static monsters with the most "strong" attack you had to defeat them. Rs2 and 3 had its quirks (no random encounters, the spark system, the formations, the non linearity and the event triggers,etc) But that werent common man
@crazymosby3079
@crazymosby3079 4 жыл бұрын
Darlan Dos Santos Oliveira Junior No shit they weren’t common, I wasn’t born yesterday. But yeah, I understand what you mean. People say it’s the best just for the story and characters, not even focusing on the combat. It’s just an extra, but it does matter more than they remember. While I didn’t mind it that much, I do understand that it is not the best combat in rpgs (turn based or active time battle). Hell, I don’t go to look for the best, just good enough to make me continue to play said game.

@@crazymosby3079 i said that just because i really dont like some things retrogamers says like in those video. Idk its odd because people overhype some games for the exact same reason they say the modern gaming sucks. Ff6 for example: "its deep, fantastic storytelling and character arcs, phenomenal writting,etc" Thats the EXACT same thing people nowadays says about the last of us if we compare. People in fact seem as they never would care so much about the gameplay of a game. Nowadays we see people overshadowing titanfall 2's incredible level design and gameplay mechanics to praise games like The witcher 3 because Story seems to be the most important thing for them. In the same way SaGa frontier's masterfully crafted combat mechanics, Open sandbox world and infinite replayability were overshadowed by ff7. Its not so different because the games are all over the place, people just dont care about them

Retro gaming? You mean bad balancing, pacing problems, horrible level design built to make players suffer (or grind if we are talking about Oldschool jrpg) in frustration just to make them play more and more? Or do you mean an flat gameplay based around poorly executed mechanics and no player feedback? I'm sorry. I love the SaGa series and i do like some old games that i would consider classics. But people have to stop with that blindly nostalgic talk about them being better or somehow the modern game design being "flat" Just no man. Theres a lot of problems in the old game design of the industry. Playing an shin megami tensei 1 nowadays feels like hell for example

You don't use roms because you want to support the dev? That makes zero sense. What retail store are you going and buying snes games from 30 years ago at MSRP? Hate to tell you your not taking money from the dev playing 30 year old roms... When you buy those used copies the dev doesn't get a cut...instantly disliked your video.
