I'm really enjoying your lectures, Tom. Reminds me of my Western Civ classes back in the day. I'm surprised at how much I remember. I took second semester first, so 19th Century Europe was my first experience with world history. My professor was as excited about the material as you, so that must explain my retention. I sat in class spellbound, taking nary a note, but acing every test. Unfortunately, my next professor lacked enthusiasm, which might explain my lower grade from him. Remember always that your lectures will outlive you and enrich the lives of those you reach. Thanks!

I feel that romanticism and the enlightenment do intersect with Rousseau. Rousseau's writings were a huge inspiration to romanticism, but he was also a major part of the enlightenment. And the enclosure acts is something I feel both Rousseau and romantics would have been enraged by. I like the idea of enlightened romanticism.

Can someone please help me if got the idea of Romanticism correct? Romanticism is the reaction to the Industrial Revolution, in a way that the Romantics emphasize the beauty of nature so then we can take a break from all of "human progress and capabilities" stuff, and focus to the appreciation of nature, which was the most affected because it is the price that tolled to achieve the Industrial Age. Can someone please help me if got the idea of Romanticism correct?

Like many children of my generation, I was fascinated and horrified by the Frankenstein story. It made Boris Karloff an "A" list star! Against the backdrop of the Romantic movement, though, "Frankenstein" becomes an indictment of modern science, particularly the debate over what animates the living. Many people today reject the mysticism of the romantics, yet deny that we are a collection of working parts. The Romantic legacy is still with us!

Would it make sense to classify Tolkien as a Romantic? Because the books seem to celebrate nature and vilify machinery, and when Fordo comes back to The Shire it goes from being innocent and joyous and takes on a dirty industrial landscape, much like Britain in Tolkien's time.

I have learned that Romanticism was about using imagination to understand one's fellow man, about rights of every individual, and about responsibility to each other. This presentation doesn't touch on that at all, but states romanticism is just narrow minded period of nostalgia for the past. This video is primarily ridiculing romanticism and the leap forward it actually afforded western thought. Do not watch this to understand romantic period; it is for entertainment only.

I don't believe we should get too hung up with the "obsoleteness" of the weapons in Jerusalem. This is a Romantic writer we are dealing with after all. The weapons mentioned all have a Divineness to them, "bring me my spear, o clouds unfold, bring me my chariot of fire". These are all things mentioned throughout the Bible, and it as if Nephilim and God himself, who according to Romantics, calls Nature his dwelling place, shall intervene with the Romantics to turn back the tide of the satanic encroachment of Industrialization. They aren't real weapons that the Romantics will use against the ominous "industrializers" more metaphorical way of allying God to their cause, and making their cause more righteous.

hi. could you be more clear about the reaction of Romantics being against the enlightment and revolutions. i thought the Tomantics were revolutionaries and they believed in change and scince. But, Neo-classicism were against urban life and revolution. they attached to Greek and Roman literature and then general nature. while romantics writers were interested in human nature and individual feelings.

I question that Romanticism was anti the Age of Enlightenment. Romanticism was a movement that valued emotion over logic. That doesn't mean they hated logic. They just loved the idea of powerful emotion.
