It's part of the explanation cause Ronaldo and Ronaldinho also left Europe when they were still relatively young and they're both super popular here yet. IMO, the main difference is that Romario's peaks ended just before the marketing explosion. Romario didn't have the super exposition that R9 and R10 had back in time.

Hi mate, i'm from the Uk and I find it sad ppl rave about Zidane and Ronaldinho etc but never mention Romario. Zidane was gets far too much credit, my favourite player by a mile is Romario. He was the most incredible player i've ever seen and I will ever see!

Romario was the best! He could score from any situation and pass the ball like nr.10 ! He didn't like to train, party and carnival were his specialty! He likes to play on the beach football! He didn't care what coaches were gonna say to him. He said that he is a goalscorer, not an athlete !

He went onto play in Brazil when many top Brazilian sides were better than top European sides. The world club championship in 2000 involved Real Madrid's Galacticos and Fergies treble winning Utd team. They were comfortably beaten by Brazilian opposition and the final was contested by Romario's Vasco de Gama and Corinthians.

Everyone, even brazilians always speak of R9, but to me Romario is better...and he is barely remembered. He wasn't a speedster or forward dribbler like R9 but he was a much better finisher and had more class for me when moving the ball.

Born in 81. He was my first idol. WC1994 will forever be my best football memory. So much great players. Hagi, Stoichkov, Maradona, Cannigia, Baggio.. But R9 stuck with me. Even though he was just a benchplayer for the Brazilian winning team in 94.

He was fast. But, besides, he had first ten meters acceleration unstoppable. When he came to Barcelona he promised 30 goals in a season. And he did it... If one strategy was unsuccessful, a single talk to Stoichkov and no problem. Cruyff was managing that team. "El Johan" was responsible for what F.C. Barcelona was form early 1990 to Messi´s goodbye. Romario was just as good as Ronaldinho, if not better. Definitely a more clinical finisher. But back then there wasn't as many media coverage. So most football supporters under the age of 40 haven't seen a lot of him. If he was 10-15 years younger, he would be considered on of the all time greats.

Funny is that I liked more Iniesta in the Messi age of Barca ... Iniesta , Xavi , Busquets and Jordi Alba was fun to watch at middle field. And yes I do wish Romario stayed more in Europe .. also was so wrong for him not to be at 1998 world cup guess he had an injury prior but he recovered , and Brazil zagallo coach didn't added him what a huge mistake..maybe counted to much on Ronaldo Nazario then again în 2002 Scolari..loll repeats the mistake to not take Romario despite his 36 years age ..he did good în Brazil that year I understand.. And as for Romario vs Ronaldo Nazario ..I would rather have Romario in his prime in team then Ronaldo ..dunno why but Romario advancing seem so effortless so magic stop turn like always thinking ahead of enemy defenders..while Ronaldo for me was like a storm a tornado and his play style as eye candy for the eye was , I think that his style was more prone to accidents like either enemy defender hit his legs more due to this style or him get a self inflicted injury ..at his time with Inter Milano I was afraid every time he had the ball entering enemy strike area (afraid that he will get a knee ankle something injury) that's just my opinion .. As a last note altough Bebeto was a gr8 duo with Romario I would loved to see Romario with Iniesta ;D

He used little pockets of accelerations to beat a player. He had tremendous ball control & improvisational ball skills. In dribbling; he's below, Pelé, Garrincha, Eusébio, Best, Cruyff, Zico, Maradona, Ronaldo 9, Messi.

@@dorw5605 Romario is a better dribbler than Pele, Garrincha and Zico. Pele even though was an amazing footballer, never really looked in full control of the ball when dribbling. However, Romario's dribbling was like art and similar to Cruyff, Maradona and R9.
