A navy admiral was the head guy there and walks through all the junior officers and civilians kissing his ass to shoot the shit with us for a few minutes. After we are in our ceremony uniform he asked if we would mind taking a picture with him, the lieutenant with him tries to intervene saying everyone is waiting on him and they need to hurry. Loyalty hah! Marc Antony (as portrayed) simply was a self serving ascendant preying upon the pain of a man he saw as potentially useful. He wanted Vorenus around because he knew he was a good soldier. Vorenus repaid him with loyal service but Marc Antony was a selfish narcissist who didn't deserve him. To his credit, at the end, Antony realized all he had forsaken and he was not just a political snake but a force to be reckoned with and a great character in the series. It's impossible not to like him a little bit but this was not him being magnanimous but raw self interest.

He was a lot better than Cicero portrayed him. That defined his picture in most history but Marc Anthony wasnt more elite and for his own gains than Cicero himself was, who was absurdedly rich like most Senators. Marc Anthony was a valliant soldier & general, trustworthy and loyal who even in Egypt wasnt as bad as he is portrayed but history is written by the winners and he lost. The last battle at sea was also bad luck. As a politician he had no real interest into it but his speech at Caesars deathbed showed how talented he really was. If he would have wanted he could have easily eliminated Octavian at several points but at the end was just tired and wanted to be left alone. After Caesar for quite some time he was the most talented leader.

First season could be about Aurelian and end at his death similar to that of ceaser, second could follow Diocletian trying to restore order, third could be about the reign of the Tetrarchy and the persecuting of the Christians and the rise of Constantine, fourth would follow Constantine’s conversion and the founding of Constantinople.

Possibly the same episode, he complained to Atia that being Consul and running Rome wasn't as much fun as he thought it would be. Mark Antony wasn't known for being a good politician or taking responsibility seriously. He showed up to the Senate drunk off his ass often enough.
@tbeller806 жыл бұрын
mariusz sabadasz he got to kill two birds with one stone. They weren't just lowly soldiers but fairly famous in the 13th Legion and he interacted with them quite a bit. He also got Vorenus to solve the very problem he created when he killed Fullman and made a mess of the Aventine.
@tbeller806 жыл бұрын
mariusz sabadasz the fact that he walked in rekindling their military relationship shows he understood Vorenus. Vorenus was technically a politician even though he was a mess right here. Rather than bringing that into the discussion, Antony went straight for Vorenus' stoic military mindset.
@menthy6 жыл бұрын
@mariusz sabadasz James (along with Kevin McKidd, who played Lucius Vorenus) has publicly stated he will never do Game of Thrones because "they stole our fucking show." "I won't be doing Game of Thrones, even if they ask me." Later, someone called him out on twitter about it, and he backtracked a bit saying he wasn't being too serious when he said that. But I sort of think he meant it since, ya know, he's never been on GOT and GOT has been good for the career of almost everyone on that show. Yes, I too would have loved to see Rome go 7 seasons, but the show was simply too far ahead of it's time and too expensive. The world wasn't ready for Rome the way it was ready for Game of Thrones.

@@manfrombritain6816 I don't understand the obsession people have of imprinting cynicism in everything. Making it out as Mark Antony just being self-serving and manipulative doesn't help to make his character more complex, it flattens it. Even the worst human beings that ever lived showed genuine affection and unconditional love to a degree. I think Mark truly cared about his men, specially Vorenus. When he let him go to free his children he had literally nothing to gain by letting him go on a wild goose chase, yet did. I loved HBO Rome because no one character could be really pigeonholed into an archetype, some of the motivation for their actions were very ambiguous, e.g. realistic and human.

I agree, the writers wanted to show the audience that above all things Marc cared about his soldiers more than anything. A language they both understand, the community of the armed forces

Well, Marcus Antonius was described by historians as somewhat of a party animal. He was into wine and women and all sorts of cheap thrills and was something of a show-off. When he sobered up though, he had a real knack for winning his troops' affections so this scene might be much closer to the actual historic personality than some people think.
@generalcaesar34772 жыл бұрын
Centuries later one of the Byzantine Emperors, Michael III “The Drunkard”, was described in similar terms as Marc Antony by historians of the usurping dynasty that succeeded Michael. Some actually think that Michael had Antony’s positive traits (his charisma and ability as a soldier) and that Antony’s negative traits were appropriated onto Michael as propaganda.

I feel like some people don't get this if they weren't in the military... but that's typically what we are. When we join we're young, love the ladies, think we're invincible, drink and party way too much. No doubt a man like that could gain our/my loyalty. Add in that in the histories he's shown as a valiant commander and loyal to his men. That's really all the enlisted ask. If he speaks your language.. even better. Sure he probably shouldn't be an Emperor. And if I saw a commander act like he does in this scene for one of my men he'd have my absolute loyalty. Hell watching this 6+ years after I got out, if I saw a commander do this for one of mine I'd drop everything to follow. That shits badass

At 0:24 you see a look of genuine concern pass over Antony's face. Then he storms in full of anger. Vorenus is a military man and will not be consoled by calming words. Antony thus speaks to him in language that he will understand. The language of the battlefield and training ground. Vorenus is a Stoic, and thus fears nothing but that he will fail to do his duty. Antony won't tell him its not his faut. That won't help him. And it's a lie. He fucked this one up. Fucked it up bad. And rather than pull him out, Antony meets him where he is. Vorenus is a man of action. Through the series he is confused by sentimentality and human relationships, but he is at home when he acts. His only possible redemption is in action. Antony promises him a mission, a chance to be useful, to once again serve Rome, to ride on the wind of his duty. At 3:02, Antony's face softens. Instead of "Centurion" Antony calls him"Lucius." And then he pulls him in for a genuinely tender hug.

Interesting how you will blame Helen of Troy for sleeping around with dude who seduced her(despite him KNOWING she was married) but not blame Anthony when he falls for a seducer. What are you saying anyway? I never mentioned the Trojan war(which if it's true, was just a proxy war for conquest, Sparta wanted to invade them anyway, that was just a good excuse). Also, if as the legend goes, Paris had not been an idiot seducing and sleeping with some dude's wife, it wouldn't happen either. Not saying it's not more of her fault since she's the one married but in his case, he actually knew so it makes him almost as guilty. Lololol Rome doesnt even hold a candle to GoT in terms of writing, character development, production value, even the plots. I love Rome but goddamn the characters fall into writing stereotypes. Yes, there is history to back up the plot but imo that weakens the shows credibility even further because they dont have focus on the broadstrokes (world building mainly). That gives them more freedom to focus on the individual character arcs. GoT masterfully builds its own world, its own history, with extremely deeply fleshed out characters. Rome is a great show, but its characters are stuck in linear arcs that frankly are predictable. Pullo is the token party boy, Vorenus the token hard ass, Atia is the token evil bitch for no reason and Octavian is the token smart kid everyone underestimates.

@jamesteegardner22733 жыл бұрын
Yes, giving a friend what they need and not want they want. It doesn't always look pretty to people on the outside but it's anything but toxic. It's done from a place of love and it usually gets the job done!

Quite true. Brotherly love, appeal to virtue/values, honest dealings, and kicking one another's ass for your own good, lol. Good stuff.
@jamesteegardner22733 жыл бұрын
@@deploribusrex4480 This is why I can't stand radical, man-hating, feminists. Buckle up cause this is probably gonna be a long one. The Twitter feminazi's simply can't understand masculinity, and masculine love for a brother so they label it as "toxic". It's always the same bs, the feminazi's of Twitter that want to "kill all men" just refuse to see the inherent virtues of masculine, brotherly love. They see two men who look out for each other, treat each other as brothers, say what the other needs to hear, not what they want to hear, give support to each other but in a no bs, tough love kind of way; and they immediately think, no, they immediately know, that those two men MUST be in a closeted, homosexuals relationship. The thought of two men who both love one another as brothers, even though they're not related is so alien to them, that their brains would explode if they didn't label them as gay, and in a relationship. This is where the virtue of masculinity can be seen. Most men are able to form friendships, and over time that friendship leads to the unconditional love both men feel for each other, without there being a romantic relationship at all. Women in general, but especially in the radical, woke, SJW, feminist community are incapable of unconditional love. If they love their romantic partner on a conditional basis, what chance is there for unconditional love in a friendship? My theory is put to the test when you see two close friends fight over something. If it's two men the fight will come to a head very quickly, and may even get physical. It almost always, and I'm talking like 99.9% almost always ends with the two men continuing their friendship. Often times their bond grows because of the fight, and the two men are able to become even closer friends. When two women fight on the other hand, it's never resolved quickly, and instead of a "toxic" fist fight the two men get in, the two women involve others, drawing clear battle lines, and go out of their way to hurt the other on a far more permanent, and devastating manner than a simple fist fight. Examples include lying about the other in order to damage their reputation, or infinitely worse, telling the truth about the other to completely destroy their reputation, and cost them another relationship in the process. I've seen quarreling women try, and succeed in getting the other fired from their jobs, and divorced from their spouse by telling the other woman's secrets. I've seen one woman try, and succeed in seducing the other woman's husband, resulting in a divorce. I've even seen a woman destroy another woman's relationship with their children by exposing the reason for the couples divorce, which was infidelity. The hurt husband didn't even want that out there because it not only embarrassed him, but also ruined the mother's relationship with her children. These actions on the part of two quarreling women who were once close friends clearly prove that most women are incapable of unconditional love in friendships, and I'm even going to go as far as saying all of the woke, SJW, "kill all men", feminists of Twitter are incapable of any type of unconditional love. I'm sorry for being so long-winded but this whole "toxic" masculinity thing really pisses me off. Masculinity has led to some of the most heroic things ever witnessed on this planet. The men storming the beaches of Normandy in WW2 did that because of masculinity, and it doesn't even have to be as dramatic as that. A father working 80 plus hours a week in order to support his family does that because of masculinity. The threat of a mother saying "if you don't stop I'm going to tell your father" only works if the father is a masculine man. Masculinity is so far removed from "toxic" that it truly boggles my mind to hear. When you add the visual of what these woke, Twitter, feminists look like to their message of "kill all men" and "toxic masculinity" you get a textbook, Psychology 101 example of projection. Saying "kill all men" is toxic. Saying that "we need to teach men NOT to rape women" is toxic. Convincing a child to try and kill themselves on the internet just because he was born with a Y-chromosome, and then hiding behind the defense of "oh it was just a joke" is toxic. Believing that anyone trying to shine a light on men's issues is a misogynist, and actively fighting for college campuses to not allow men's issue groups, and men's rights activist speakers on campus in order to silence them, thus preventing them from raising awareness to all of the issues most men are really struggling with right now is extremely toxic. This is what most men sit through, and are forced to deal with on a daily basis. I've seen numerous reports of transgendered people who made the decision to become men tell their story, and it's always the same, "now that I can pass for a biological man nobody cares about me anymore, nobody is willing to help me anymore, and if I dare complain about any of my mental health issues I'm told to 'man up' and I'm usually told that by biological women". One might see this and take from it that all femininity is toxic, but that's not right either. It's simply a case of balance, and the fact that our Western society is way too out of balance, and much too heavy on the virtues of feminine ideals. It's why everyone gets participation trophies, why entitlement is running rampant in both men and women, and why men are suffering from issues like failure to launch syndrome, unemployment, homelessness, drug use, their underperformance and underattendance at college universities, and the ever plummeting rates of new marriages, childbirth, and marriages actually ending successfully. I think the current way men are dealing with this will eventually lead to change. The red pill, and the MGTOW movements are increasing the rate of deceleration in commitment, marriage, and childbirth in the Western cultures. This will either result in change, and a balancing of the scales, or to the fall of Western civilization. Either way we won't be seeing any "kill all men" threads on Twitter anymore. I'm good with either.
@blackgenetics62063 жыл бұрын
@@jamesteegardner2273 That's a pretty good analysis of our society in these trying times. I'm sure you've heard the saying, weak men create hard times, hard times create hard men, hard men create good times, good times create weak men. We are the weak men and we're slowly seeing the disintegration of Western civilization because we've lost our traditional ideals. We have so many confused people and its showing in society, it's no wonder we have high cases of depression and suicide rate along with the other points you brought up. Society is so soft these days, there are so many snowflakes that create additional problems and see enemies everywhere to suit their narrative. These radical feminists have changed everything and they are supported by weak men who ultimately want to pander to these women. Modern feminism isn't about equality, it's about superiority and ironically its toxic. They want to keep men down and will use the very same phrases you mentioned to do it.
@anonymousindividual95343 жыл бұрын
@@jamesteegardner2273 I disagree with you and I believe that toxic masculinity does exist, but what you have stated isn’t what feminists describe as “toxic masculinity.” Men should be able to express emotions and feelings, and if they are reserved for too long, it might led to a subconscious absorption of this toxicity which needs to be released. The idea that “Boys don’t cry.” Is an inundated concept that should be reserved to the confines of the trash can. Everyone at times needs empathy from their best friend when he’s going through something troubling in his life, and I believe it is my obligation as a friend to comfort him, not tell him to “Suck it up, Noah.”. Furthermore, the manner in which many men talk about women is not okay, and it’s best to be removed from our private conversations. Talking about a women’s natural features in suggestive and lustful terms is denigrating for both the woman and the man who is stating it.

Also the fact Cya89 isn't taking into consideration here is that the Roman legion was HUGE on discipline. If you didn't snap to attention to an officer, particularly one of Mark Anthony's rank you'd get the lash or worse and in that sense personality just doesn't enter into the equation. This would be drilled right into a lifetime regular soldier like Vorenus so his response would be almost instinctual.

He had the perfect setup with Octavian but fell under the spell of Cleopatra, which led to his downfall. He survived numerous battles, enemies, and attempts on his life but couldn’t escape Cleopatra’s web. Purefoy did such an outstanding job with the character. It was a damn tragedy that Rome was prematurely cancelled and hastily finished. Still pissed about it.

The whole "Cleopatra charmed Antony/Caesar" thing is a historical meme with little basis in reality. In fact, the entire thing started as propaganda by Octavian himself to turn Rome against Antony. Cleopatra and Antony were equal partners in their power grab, and honestly, they both knew Octavian wanted them out of the game, so them teaming up(and falling in love) in a bid to survive makes sense. Both Cleopatra and Antony were intelligent and ambitious leaders. Love them or hate them, characterizing the whole affair as Antony thinking with his cock like an idiot is reductive and historically inaccurate.

There was no reason to prevent Anthony from killing himself. His entire world was shattered and Octavian was going to kill him anyway. Better to die on your own terms than be the subject of a triumph like Vercingetrix

Marc Antony was despised by Octavian by the end. He would have absolutely hung Marc Antony and Cleopatra in Rome had he gotten the chance. That would have been his big moment, his “Caesar” moment, the moment to do what Caesar had just done 15 years earlier.

Antony always used useful people to advance his own cause, true enough... But you can't help but think he cared about his men in the trenches, even just a little bit. One bark from a former legionary about a friend and fellow soldier in dire straights and he comes, in person, to snap him out of his position and get him back to the real world. The bastard may have a heart.

Also, Lepidus´s men deserted him to join Mark Anthony. Troops liked him.
