It's amazing to think that the railway from London Liverpool Street to Norwich was built in a few short years by pure muscle in the mid 1800s. The cutting through Brentwood up the Brentwood Bank is one of the steepest inclines in the country, and all dug by hand. I can still remember the sound of the Britannia's barking their way up the Brentwood Bank to Norwich. I live 200 yards from the cutting, and you now maybe lucky to hear the purr of a Class 66, hauling an intermodal rake, powering up the line to Felixstowe docks.

@rogeremberson6464. Occasionally a Britannia still climbs Brentwood Bank ! I had 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" a few years back from Liverpool Street to just south of Norwich (she failed, as she was thrashed very hard, poor old girl). There are several videos on KZfaq, if you are interested.

Yes, and pre-Beeching the GER and other companies had plastered the region with lines! Many of those long gone lines would be very useful these days, including the lines around Melton Constable (the Crewe of the East), and from Lowestoft to Gt Yarmouth. I can't help thinking that a direct serive to Gt Yarmouth from London would help re-genetate the town.

When I was route learning on this line back in the late 80’s I was riding up front with the driver (class 309-I liked them) going through ingatestone at about 90mph when the signal at the end of the platform suddenly changed from Green to red then back to green. The driver didn’t bat an eyelid. “Happens a lot” he said. Hopefully the signaling system is more reliable now!

@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck
@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck 2 ай бұрын
@Athanlmmortal Hi and thank you for watching, the rails you see in the 4 foot (in the middle of the track) are scrap rail waiting to be taking away or new ones waiting to be put in as the safe walking routes are meant to be the CESS (to the side of the track) they would become a trip hazard if they was placed there so it is safer to place them in the 4 foot I hope this answers your question

Hello. Since becoming a resident of the Waveney Valley 3 years ago, I've developed an interest in East Anglia's railways, past & present, so your videos are of great interest to me. I guess you have become very well acquianted with the various loops off the GE main line whilst driving locos with a top speed of 60mph! Would it be possible to add some explanation of the various signs you pass? Thanks, Stephen

I remember a very much earlier video in the opposite direction with a class 87 to Liverpool Street. I suppose this loco is tied up in that dead end until that rake is either removed by another loco or reversed out on completion?
@daviddearden6372

@12crepello

The class 86's (not 87's) on this route operated in push-pull mode. This utilised a fixed formation with a locomotive at one end and a driving brake second open (DBSO) at the other. When driving from the DBSO the loco at the rear (pushing) was controlled by digital signals from the cab. This alleviated any need for uncoupling and running round at terminus stations. If you search DBSO you will find more information about these vehicles.

Can you explain why there are no trap points at the down end of the loop at Witham? Surely, there's nothing to stop an errant train from proceeding onto the main line.
@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck
@AngliaCabRides-vv5ck 3 ай бұрын
I don't know the reason why there isn't one there but there is a TPWS at L779 which is the signal at the end of the loop and if a train passes the signal at danger (SPAD Signal Passed At Danger) it will automatically initiate a brake demand and stop the train.

The signaller does not know that the conversation is being recorded, thus if it was broadcast all over the internet you would probably be contravening privacy regulations. Also would you be happy knowing that your conversations were going out all over the world for all and sundry to hear.

This route is signalled by Liverpool Street IECC as far as south of Colchester, and by Colchester PSB beyond. All conversations with IECCs and PSBs are recorded anyway ! But I agree with your privacy rational.
