Mr. Ron Carter is one of the most famous bassists in history. But did you know he started out playing cello? In this episode (2 of 4) Mr. Carter talks to fellow Epifani artist KJ (The Oddysy) about how he got started with music back in grade school.
KJ also asks about the electric bass. The answer: Ron can certainly play it, but it's not his main thing.
Ron Carter says classical music is his balm, his salve. The proof is in his solo recording Ron Carter Meets Bach, a multi-bass homage to the great European composer. All parts played by Mr. Carter himself.
Ron Carter plays Epifani amps exclusively. In this video you see him with his UL 901 bass amp and DIST 1x12 dual-impedance bass speaker cabinet.

Love listening to bass players just talk. The wisdom they possess is just awesome. Ron, Marcus, Victor, Leland, enjoy listening to speak as much as listening to them play.

Ron is part of bass royalty and was at the forefront of jazz's changes along with Herbie, Wayne, Tony, and one of the change agents, Miles.

The camera shots from the side show, that neck is so incredibly thin! I never knew a double bass neck could be so narrow.

Mr Carter Im so glad you have softened your views on electric bass over the years. In the 70 lots of acoustic bass players were not crazy about the electric bass. I think perhaps Jaco Pastories may have had something to do with more jazz players acceptance of the electric. Youve mentioned in downbeat encountering him and he told you that you were a great influence on his playing. I also fogot that you were indeed a cellist but switched to bass because there were few opportunities for African Americans in the classical field at the time.I mentioned a bassist from the 50s playing cello and now remember it was Oscar Pettifort. Ive had the pleasure of speaking to you very briefly at a small jazz club on 23rd and 7th ave in NYC back in the 80s.
