Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation banning state funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs at the state's public universities.

A New College board revamped by DeSantis abolished the school's DEI office, and the college's interim president recently fired the diversity dean, a precursor to what other Florida universities could experience under SB 266, which was a centerpiece of DeSantis' aggressive legislative agenda this year.
As he gears up for a run for president, DeSantis has emphasized a culture war agenda against so-called "woke" policies, and universities have been a major focus. The governor has decried a campus culture that he views as overly focused on issues of racial, gender and LGBTQ equity.

This idiot also thinks that African American studies for kids in HS trying to compete for college is too advanced. But we teach our kids BS history from books created by the daughters of the confederacy from 200 years ago that leads them to believe the south was noble in their fight to keep their " culture" when no one with half a brain cell pretends the civil war wasnt about slavery in part. Also florida kids test scores on the national level had dropped a whopping 25% meaning our schools rank 39th behind freaking Lousinana and just before Mississippi. Berkeley grad here (multiple degrees). DeSantis has a point here, the academy has become imbalanced, and it’s reasonable to question some of the dogma - but you can’t, because you will be ostracized, or worse. It’s no longer a free speech environment. While conservatives may want to do some of the same things in a different way (censoring, etc.), and are clearly imperfect/corrupted in their own way, we need to be able to talk about that stuff. Right now, the ONLY people making that point are people like DeSantis. Listening to liberals deny what DEI is, or how it has gotten out of control, only push people further to the right. We are going to have to take two steps backward and revisit some of these ideas and changes over the next 20-30 years once some ideological balance has been restored. People pushed too hard, too fast, and they know it.

When I attended all white Myers Park High in Charlotte NC in the 1960s we were taught that the Civil War was fought for "Southern Pride," and that "we" defeated "them" and chased them out of our territory. No mention of slavery was ever made, except our teacher, Mr. (Paul) Swofford, said that blacks practiced slavery in Africa, that they were made black because of the "mark of Cain," that it was the Irish who were slaves in America, bought and sold by Jews. The local newspaper and radio station were adamantly against integration and the headline in the Charlotte Observer when Martin Luther King was assassinated was "RACE AGITATOR MEETS END " to which my father exclaimed, "By gosh they got 'im!"

I went to Berkeley and still am active with the campus. DeSantis is right of course. The Liberal Arts and Humanities were largely classical and traditional areas of studies, but sometime around the late 90s, a shift occur where LGBT-Queer, African American, Latinx, Asian American studies etc, became the dominant courses to fulfill breadth requirements. The angrier and more indignant you got in your writing, the higher the grades. People who majored in these couldn't find decent jobs, until San Francisco started to fund non-profit groups under inclusion and diversity measures and now everytime we have a time hall meeting about funding, staff from these groups completely monopolize the call-in/sit-in and demand more funding- while, of course, they solve nothing whatsoever. Actually, the city's in the worse state it's ever been - and the lib. news media doesn't covered a fraction of the corruption in city government because it makes them look bad..

Yeah well, I'll just tell you, I changed my major to humanities and it was mandatory I take gender studies. The classes on feminism are nothing but lesbians complaining about men; and everything the lesbian is arguing he's a total lie. Literally, a lie. Those gender studies and feminism classes were a complete waste of my time and tuition. I think I should have been able to use that tuition to take another marketing class or a computer science class or any other elective that would be useful, but not waste it on gender studies and feminism. Sad.

Florida pays 10 percent of the the public money. The federal government pays 90 percent of the public money used to fund Florida colleges. Some students from Florida get scholarships paid for by Florida’s lottery. This may be settled in the courts.

Misleading... Florida Dept. of Education is in charge of 10% of the Federal allocated funds while the remaining 90% goes directly to the school districts in grants. Florida Sales Taxes and local Land Taxes pay the lion's share of the funds. The Federal Gov. does not pay 90% of shit.
