It would be great if Ron's Ex-wife wrote a book about the yrs. she was dating Ron and how the after math changed things for him since she was around right after Super Fly finished filming. They were married in 1973, so that would be after Super Fly TNT. She probably could shed some light on the way things took place during that time period. I read Ellen Holly's book about her time with Ron O'Neal....interesting time line since it crahes right into the time of Ron and his first wife before they married.

@ cilla c it would be wonderful if carol banks could write a book about her years with ron. she did an interview with jet magazine, i believe, on the day their divorce was final. she gave a little insight into the pain ron went through after superfly. she also touched on her pain of him leaving her for another woman. she was astonished that he left her for a white woman since he was so into the plight of blacks. he did remarry in 1993 to a black woman by the name of audrey pool who was a construction engineer. some info of her can be found on the internet. they were married until he passed away in 2004.

@@irenebrewer5726 Yes, I read the Jet Magazine interview from 1980. Well, as I quoted Ellen Holly's book, Ron was not the kindest man when it came to his relationships with women during the 70's. When I read the Jet magazine article, I got the impression the marriage was over way before his first wife was willing to accept it. As in Robert Guilliume's book, he said Ron had picked up "super Fly's" ways,so this could be about Ron with other women during his marriage along with drug use. In the movie Super Fly "Priest" had two women and liked to use cocaine. Have you read Ellen Holly's book "One Life"? It's got a least 3 chapters on her relationship with Ron. This relationship would have been scandalous if it happened today with all the Social Media, but meaning the relationship happened during 1971-1972, I guess Ron's manager was able to keep it quiet.

@@cilla-themusiclover oh yes, was definitely a huge womanizer. ellen holly stated that she was not jealous of other women but she was jealous of his dog...lol. after superfly was completed he went to cleveland and after a while he returned to new york with his future wife carol banks. he was untruthful to ellen about his and carol's relationship. ellen had admitted that ron had not given her reason to think of herself as ron's "beloved". it's sad that she would let men use her as ron and others did. i'm not sure that the relationship was kept quiet by ron's management. the media (black) turned on ron and he became the 'invisible man'. he barely received publicity of any kind, good or bad. many fans had no idea that he passed away because his death received little attention. i first found out by reading a news crawl on mtv. i saw nothing in jet or ebony. SAD!!!!

@@irenebrewer5726 I remember hearing of Ron's death on the radio and read it in the NY times as well as Playbill magazine, since Ron was also a threater actor, it was mentioned of his work on and off Broadway. It was also stated in Ellen Holly's book that Carol was married during the time she and Ron planned to marry, they were waiting for her divorce. If true, then her marriage to Ron would be her second. Well, the interesting part is HOW Ron invited Ellen to Cleveland at the same time his fiance was there and had to confess what was going on. Why invite this sittuation when he problably knew it would NOT benefit him. He could have just broke off the relationship with Ellen as soon as his last filming of superfly, that would have been a few weeks before he went back to Cleveland. Also wondered what story Ron told Carol about Ellen, because on the bio of Ron O'neal 'TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY" ONLY Ellen is mentioned as Ron's girlfriend. Another thing I remember from Ellen Holly is SHE did voice overs for some of the white Actress that played "Priest's Side Chick" in SuperFly...yep, she was the one doing those lines because Sig Shorr (producer of SuperFly asked her to do a few "loops" (voice overs). Ron was a good actor, but I believe he got in his own way and didn't have the strongest of people representing him at the time, he should have been sought after for major movie roles. I read somewhere that Ron at a period of time was homless and had a drug addiction that he overcame. His second wife (Audrey Pool) must have been already established in her careeer as an Engineer and had her own wealth. She went on to be a professor at UCLA. Ron never had children....with either marriage and not even adoption? really sad, I bet he would have been a good father.

@@irenebrewer5726 In Robert Giullume's book. there's a story of Robert and Ron at dinner at a mexican resturant where Robert is telling of an offer of doing a TV series, this was around 1977-1978 and the series became "SOAP" where Robert played the butler. When Robert was explaining what his part would be, Ron O'Neal said Robert was too Good an actor for such a demeaning role. Well, I for one am happy that Robert took that role as "Benson the butler on SOAP" because it lead to His Own TV show "BENSON" which was very popular and made Robert a household name. Ron was wrong on that one. I find it also interesting how Ron's wife Carol voiced her opinion by saying Robert had bills and had to eat, then asked her husband "WHO would Support him, you"? Guess Ron had no answer for that.Just by that conversation, you could tell there was tension in Ron's marriage. 1978-1979 must have been a sad time for Carol because soon her marrige was over.

He was totally correct about black films, the majority of them, anyhow. Most of them are not star producing films, nor are they about anything outside of bad relationships, family supported by a black matriarch and black men wearing dresses for laughs. Now, certainly, those are stories worth telling and can be told excitingly but when they are the only stories, its kind of insulting and embarrassing. Is it that blacks audiences wont take to other stories? I dont buy that, on the whole. Is it that Hollywood wont put money into such projects? I wont wholly buy into that either. It is more a lack of effort and willfulness on the part of many of Hollywood's black stars to put money and energy into such projects and on the other side there is the fact that black audiences, especially, the young ones dont demand anything different, and when it comes to money, its all about demand because no one is going to supply what nobody really wants. The few who do get overlooked because they dont have the kind of support and distribution as more familiar and predictable projects.

There was such a mystique surrounding the film Superfly due to a couple of reasons. One obviously being the soundtrack, the other being Ron O'Neal's ubiquitous presence and style. It was hard to entirely think of him as being Black, rather more so a mixed-race person. He didn't look like anyone else in the film, which really made him stand-out. I am glad to hear here that he was both undeniably & unapologetically Black.

@@irenebrewer5726 That's right! Ron O'neal went through some heavy changes after SuperFly. I read some of Robert Guilliume's bio, he talks about Ron O'neal and he were BEST friends, Ron had a hard time after super Fly. Ron saw Hollywood at it's ugliest where black actors were concerned. It was really difficult trying to encourage movie directors about "casting" black actors back in the 70's thur the 1980's. Ron was all about empowering Black actors.

@@irenebrewer5726 This is why I posted videos from back in 1972, when Ron just finished SuperFly. You mentioned Ron's Ex-wife...I also read Ellen Holly's Book "One Life". Seems Mr. O'neal was NOT very honest in certain parts of his private life. The timeline of this yr 1971-1972 would put 2 women in a realtionship with the same man. Not cool. Jet magazine archives has Ron marriage took place November 1973,in the article He was dating his future wife Carol for 2 YEARS. That means he was with Carol as he dated Ellen Holly since Ellen wrote in her book she started dating Ron in the beginning of Super Fly being filmed. That would be the early part of 1972. Carol lived in Clevland still, while Ron was in NY. His ex-wife is a better person than me....She also felt Ron's "changes". Her book is heart breaking, although she was able to pick up the pieces of her life. Ellen Holly NEVER for gave Ron for how he treated her. Don't think I could have either if it were me.
