Ron Sostaric talks about the difficulties with the entry, descent, and landing of the massive vehicles that would land humans on Mars.
Sostaric is an entry, descent, and landing systems expert for the Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics Division at NASA Johnson Space Center. He has contributed to a number of projects, including the X-38 Crew Return Vehicle, the Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT), Morpheus, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), and the Terrestrial Return Vehicle (TRV).
Johnson Space Center’s talkMARS presentations do not follow the model of a typical technical briefing. These talks focus more on the “why” of a human mission to Mars and translate complicated technologies and ideas in an easy-to-understand format.

what if you use reverse aerodynamic diffuser such as the one in the fist spool of an axial jet but backwards around the entry vehicle in 2 spools with the inner one being powered to take energy from the air and slow down that way

If this is really what NASA is working on I'm depressed for NASA. The speed of sound on Mars isn't same as on Earth. Therefor using "Mach" #s is useless without qualifying what you mean.

From The Basement of the Science Building Holy crap you're right. Forget it everybody, we're staying on earth.

Seth Weber You're over reacting to what I wrote. We're not staying on Earth. SpaceX will get us to Mars. No "tin cans" with parachutes or saucers with spare tire balloons. Propulsive landing and take off is the way to go. Robust, Reusable, ReFuelable vehicles.

From The Basement of the Science Building I've got nothing but respect for Elon Musk. He has been very successful in large part because of his ability to ask the right questions, and listen carefully to the answers, of the very smart people at NASA. And he's not one to discard a useful tool from his toolbox for dogmatic reasons.
