In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 9 Topic 2 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 9 (1980-present).
Starting with the 1964 campaign of Barry Goldwater, a massive conservative backlash against the liberalizing trends of American society grew in strength throughout the 1970s. The crowning achievement of this New Right was the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980.
Reagan was the embodiment of the threefold conservative agenda of the time: Cold War conservatism, pro-business economics (aka, Reaganomics), and moral and religious conservatism.
Reagan was able to deploy measures to achieve all three, whether through supply-side economics (trickle down economics) or the appointment of no less than four conservative judges to the Supreme Court.
Ultimately, the election of Ronald Reagan can be seen as a fundamental rejection of the liberal gains of the 1960s and 1970s.

Great channel although as Thomas Sowell has challenged, nobody on the right ever claimed Reaganomics was “the trickle down economics” and put up a cash reward to the person who could identify the source of this phrase to which nobody could find and Sowell never had to pay out. Thanks for your great content although I graduated 35+ years ago, I love to watch AP classes that I wasn’t able to qualify for in my day but my post high school life, once I began college, has been dominated by learning especially history.

Not really. Our teacher explained to our class that most events as recent as 50 years ago will tend to be biased. That's why APUSH doesn't ask LEQs or DBQs on unit 9. There is also likely only 3 to 4 MCQs on the test as well.
@donaldduck4942
@donaldduck4942 2 жыл бұрын
That has never been possible lmao. Literally one of the key points that we are taught in APUSH is that all of history is biased in some way, shape, or form. While not all biases are inherently bad it doesn’t change the fact that they are still there. Personally, I feel like Heimler did a pretty good job in giving the facts required to know for the APUSH test.

2:44 Paul Harvey coined "Reaganomics," not Reagan. Also, at 2:54 it is misleading at best to visually describe supply-side economics with a "Trickle-down" political cartoon by an opponent of supply-side economics. That is how an opponent of supply-side economics would describe supply-side economics-not how an objective observer would and certainly not a supporter. In fact, why not show a critical political cartoon along with a supportive political cartoon side-by-side to show divergent perspectives? Double Fact Check at 3:18: 1) Reagan never argued for "Trickle down" economics (indeed, he never even uttered that phrase) and 2) no such theory even exists. As economist Thomas Sowell explains, "The 'trickle-down' theory cannot be found in even the most voluminous scholarly studies of economic theories -- including J.A. Schumpeter's monumental 'History of Economic Analysis,' more than a thousand pages long and printed in very small type." It is revealing, however, that he uses a phrase ("Trickle Down economics") invented by Reagan's Democratic opponents from the 1980s to describe Reagan's policies instead of the objective "supply-side economics." 3:39 is misleading. Its stated that, "All you really need to know is that these are taxes that the very wealthy have to contend with." This gives the false impression of Reagan as a President who only cared about "the very wealthy." This is especially misleading because right before that it is stated at 3:29 that "it [the ERTA] cut income taxes by twenty five percent over the next three years." In short, it gives the false impression that this only benefited "the very wealthy." From 3:49 on this is where the author's hand is really revealed: gone are the attempts at unbiased teaching. We see the anti-supply side economics political cartoon/caricature presented on-screen along with a straw man description of supply-side economics at 3:51: "if the top tier are prosperous then that prosperity will trickle down to others.” Who is he quoting for that straw man description? No sources are ever cited in the video or the description. At 3:44 he repeats the claim of Reagan's Democratic opponents that "the wealthy disproportionately benefited from those Reagan-era tax cuts." At 3:55 he does something very interesting at two levels: First, he reverses his role of critic to one of defender by randomly stating "Before you go canceling Reagan over that [Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981]..." This allows him to appear as a non-partisan and objective educator with no bias. Given his comments up to this point, we can safely deduce that he is not. Second, why would Reagan get "Cancelled"? This is actually a telling thing to say. People get "cancelled" for saying and doing controversial things. For instance, imagine a politician was at a private dinner with donors and was secretly recorded saying something racist. "Cancelling" someone implies that something was said or done that was controversial. Thus, the idea of Reagan getting "cancelled" for passing tax reduction is analogous to a Freudian slip; there is nothing to "cancel" for having honest policy differences, but the fact that he brings it up is telling of what he thinks. 4:09 is the tired "Reagan hates the poor but not the military" line we hear ad nauseum, which is also repeated at 4:48. Here's the bottom line: It is fine to believe all of this! But, from one history teacher to another, please do not present yourself as an unbiased history teacher. Explain to students that historians and economists disagree about these issues, as well as what your opinions on debatable subjects are. Oh, and it never hurts to cite your sources. P.S. It was not my intention to fact-check this video in such detail, but I kept noticing issues throughout. I think this channel does wonderful things, but I could not be silent when I kept hearing opinion presented as fact.

Wow, wonderful response, Mr. Goldsmith! I admire Sowell as well. You’re points are great, the mainstream media liberal propaganda-based agenda creeps into many aspects of thought, especially educational material. Although, I’ve personally gotten pretty tired of the term “fact check” as it’s tremendously overused by far-left organizations. God bless you, and take a look at IW with Alex J (trying to get get cnsrd by AI, I’m sure you can figure out what that stands for) and Pastor John MacArthur for great, relevant sermons for our day. @elizabethkurth2069

how is his policy not controversial? how is it not cancellable? economic policy is just as- or even more- impactful and detrimental to different groups of people as any other policy, I don’t see why you couldn’t “cancel” or seriously criticize someone for harming the poor and working class- that’s just as bad as harming any other disadvantaged group, is it not? economic policy differences are not “honest policy differences” any more than social issue are honest policy differences, both can cause significant harm to groups that are already disadvantaged.
