Ronaldinho was bigger than football in his time. He made the kids think about nothing else except football. We were in the streets day in/day out practicing his skills until it was dark outside because of him. He was truly a magical player.

At that time Milan were on the decline in general (the scudetto in the next season 10-11 was more an exception that anything else). In the summer of 09 we sold Kaka, Ancelotti left to join Chelsea and Maldini retired. We didn’t bother replacing them adequately nor address the ageing squad we had then. There are other factors, but these are the main ones. So after 2012 when we sold Thiago Silva and Ibra plus Zambrotta, Nesta, Gattuso, Seedorf and Inzaghi leaving/retiring the downfall was quite steep.

They were all washed up and way past their primes. Milan was a retirement home at the time, full of players past ther primes and only a shadow and an empty shell of that legendary teams from the start/middle of the 2000s with prime Shevchenko, Rui Costa, later Kaka, Seedorf, Pirlo, Inzaghi, Cafu, Maldini, Nesta, Stam, Serginho... Not to mention that team at the end od the 80s with Van Basten, Gullit, Riijkard... Or 90s with Savicevic, Boban, Weah... This was a parody team compared to those teams with real world class players at their peaks.

@@siberianTiger639 washed up is taking it a step too far imo. Yes, they were past their best years, but the main issue was we didn’t address the question of how to face the future. I think it’s more so Berlusconi just gave up. He couldn’t be bothered anymore. Could’ve been nice to build something around Ibra, Thiago Silva and Pirlo, but never mind. A dark period that has ended. Not that I’m particularly happy with Milan atm especially with the way they treated Maldini last summer.

The false English media started a narrative that Ronaldinho was finished, labeling it his worst season. Yet, any player with that many assists in a season would typically be considered great. Ronaldinho didn't leave Europe because he was underperforming; it was because the football pundits wanted to shift the spotlight to Messi and CR7. Same way they made a capaign to diminish Neymar's light. Even going as far as claiming Mbappe was psg best payer when Neymar is literally unplayable .

Ronaldinho was said to be quite done at that time… but this version of him easily equals prime versions of a lot of great players, and is still way better than nowadays « top players » like Mbappe… Zidane achieved vintage football era, but Ronaldinho defined the modern standards.
