should have mentioned checking the regulations, in some states lights on the roof are illegal on the road - as is any object that obstucts the vision line over the bonnet , a lot of lights/light bars are mounted atop the bull bar and violate that rule, can be costly.

Instead of adjusting the roof lights out to gain perifial gain or lighting up the side of the track or road, try the opposite, try angling the lights inward, in other words cross the beams, that way you eliminate the dark patches. Try it it works

No restiction on high beam, but fitting LED low beam is illegal, with good reason. Low beams should have a clear defined cut off and should never dazzle oncoming drivers, and thus must be ADR approved. DO NOT FIT REPLACMENT LOW BEAM - PLEASE.

@@4WheelingInNSW more precisely. It is illegal to change a low beam reflector, or to fit a leg bulb inside a hi/low housing. Ie, it is illegal to change the optical properties of the low beam spread and cutoff without engineering appoval. Those headlight housings that have a separate high beam reflector chamber and bulb, there is no restriction. I wish the cops would fine and defect all those cars where the low beams have been altered with led dropins.

Great Video, which even i with my "under all pig"-english most perfectly understand, oh i'm coming from Germany. In the Video you showed the Problems about driving in dust, my advice for that: If you know the trip will be dusty, then use cover, which changes the white light into amber light! With amber light you even see more by driving when it's foggy or snowing. I'm using a a 20" Light bar with 5 modes (white light, amber light, white flashing, amber flashing & white-amber flashing) and one morning it was under -2° C, foggy weather conditins, without light you could see 2 meters, with light you could see 20 meters, with the farlight it was 10 meters, with the fog lights it was 25 meters and with the amber light of my led light bar i could see more than 50 meters wide.

Ronny, you guys should look into high idle kits for when you are winching or when you need you run your lights while stationary. We run them on our ambulances here in the states for when we are on scene of calls with the lights and AC running. They will keep the RPM's up so you are producing more power from your alternator to cover the loads being run.

I love my amber lights. Replaced my fog lights with Baja design squadron pro amber leds. They are the best seeing through dust. No reflection on the eyes. Nice and low light. And I have a set on my ditch light/mirror hood location. Have them angled out to see in the ditches. Also have rock lights. They are awesome for walking around or placing a tire where you want it. Gotta have light, gotta see! 😎👍🏁

I bought a pair of Diode Dynamics amber fogs and love them. Super range and spread, help preserve my night vision, and do a great job if revealing changes in the track surface after dark. Don't reflect back as much light in dust as white lights, just cut right thru it. Also work great for day time driving lights cause they're so bright. But at the same time I've never ever had anyone I'm following tell me they're getting blinded. Depending on driving conditions, I will use the Diode Dynamics amber fogs lights, and just leave my low beams off

Love this video. My first LED bar was 180W of reasonable quality, I really liked it and it performed well. But the light went everywhere. I now have a single Hella lightbar, 36W, but with a better optics design. Puts light down the road at about 400-500m, like the old bar, but the light is trimmed vertically, so I don't shine up in the trees any more. A decent improvement, from a smaller bar.

G'day Ronny, Another good reason for doing desert driving of a night is that once the sand has cooled off its firmer to drive on, trust me at 13.5 Ton we dont like being stuck in soft powdery bloody sand. Another good option when driving in dust at night is we run a pair of Fog light & a couple of amber lenses for the bull lights & that seems to cut through it not to bad mate.

Great video as usual, my 2 cents worth is to be aware of your surroundings, particularly on coming vehicles, so many people either can't judge the distance their lights go or are just plain arrogant on the the road. This goes for when approaching a vehicle from behind or an on coming vehicle.

In WA it is only legal to run 4 additional forward facing (non factory) lights. So it is worth keeping that in mind when looking at a setup combining multiple lights. Additional lights that have a solid cover fitted when on road are not considerred part of the four in use are also fine.

Love how the two of you are just pumping out vids, please keep them coming. Totally agree on the cheap vs. expensive lights. I would also like to add that a lot of the cheap ones have really poor seals, so after a year or two, you might find your lamp half full of water. But in the bush, I would get cheaper (not bottom range, but half-decent) floodlights - not pencil beams. Of course, there are other options as well, like two pencil beam Xenons and four flood LEDs, which I think make a great combo. It will give you great light without draining your battery. Other things to consider for night driving are rear lights. I´d want a couple of LEDs that lights up close to the rear but from a pretty high angle, in case you get yourself in a pinch. Going forward it´s easy to figure out what obstacles your wheels will hit or not. Reversing might be a whole different story.

I have an $800 bar light on my car, blinds me every time I drive past a road sign. I put a $60 light bar on my wife's car, side by side against the garage door you wouldn't pick the difference, out on the road the cheap light does look a little dimmer and probably doesn't have the same reach but it doesn't make road signs flare, still shits all over the head lights. All things considered I think the cheap light provides a more comfortable driving experience. Your right about the seals though, I just pulled the light back off after about two months (mother in law seized the motor) and I noticed a lot of condensation inside the lens. Edit : I just checked, there's no condensation in my $800 light bar...I wouldn't have been happy.

Hi Ronny. An alternative list setup I used was with the original truck lights upgraded and 4 external spotties The side spotties were set slightly to the left and right and the middle ones slightly up.. The ones to the sides gave great vision to see "around corners". When a track zig sags you can see what's to come and the ones that are shining slightly up helps when approaching slight inclines in road conditions and also when driving down hills. When driving down hill the main lights light up in front of you but the spotties light up what's to come up ahead. So the road is covered ahead of you but also the approaching corner and also the road above where your main lights can't light up. Hope it is informative. Thanks for the great content. Regards Deon. Great stuff. I would like to see your recommended config between white light and amber. I run a lot in snow (US - High Sierra) and dust (Desert). You mention staying out of dust but not using a good mix of amber vs. white. I use HID for headlights that throw a tight line and good distance. I am considering an amber bar (30 inch) for snow and dust and white spots for augmented visual distance off road. Thoughts?

Ronny, your lights just amazing. I love them very much. But there's a problem and that is money. Cheapest ARB set of spot beam with wire is ₹87K, which is a lot of money. Those light bars may be rigid, baja Or KC.. American can get them in just a couples of 100 dollars. Most expensive one's may 1.5K dollars, but in rupees a set of rigid is ₹27K. Those Lp pro 6/7 are around ₹75-85Ks. Indian brand are not good enough. Chinese one's are better cheaper and brighter, but doesn't really last long. It's hard to get a good light here in India especially for a middle class family like us. Super rich people can get it easily, but for us it's a 5-7 years project.

The spread and range of lights is one thing, you really need to focus on the color temperature of the lights. The Kelvin value. 5500K is good for most people in general conditions. But a bit of fog, a bit of rain, a bit of dust....4300K is way better for visibility. It simply just easier for the eyes. The Amber/Yellow covers that Harry was talking about in his Modified video. Also, 5500K creates more shadows than 4300K.

My question would be…. On a bull bar mount (I.e. in the middle section of an ARB bar) is it better to have two spotlights or a light bar which can of course mix spread and beam as well as being just spread or just beam? I’m thinking light vs airflow into the radiator. With spots I could also mount angled out smaller bars for side spread on the outer wings of the bull bar, noting that in QLD we are limited to 4 additional lights only. What’s better?

An additional reason that driving at night is safer… tunnel vision. There is less distraction from the beautiful scenery. If you can only see what is illuminated directly ahead, you spend fewer precious seconds focused on some interesting feature in the far distance. It’s like having blinders on, forcing you to only look at the immediate front. If I’m looking at the beautiful mountain top in the distance, it’s easy to overlook the pothole that I wish I would have avoided.

There is such a thing as too much light, especially on the highway because when you swap back to low beam the light difference means your eyes take longer to adjust, combined with light reflection from signage bouncing back into your face.

Spot lights on your bullbar should be cross-eyed, just a small amount . This will give e you a better spread and a more intense centre. Jmho.

Another great video Ronny, quick question…. How do you get power to your roof bar? Do you drill holes in the bodywork?

Depends on the car type, basicly, we could line the wire from the water channel on our roof, from the back door from the car

@@suhermantjahyadi7361 When I ran a big light bar on my FJ cruiser, I ran the wire up through the snorkel. The small amount or wire going from the snorkel to the light bar was so small, you didn't notice it.

Are roof mounted lights even legal? Pretty sure led headlights are illegal in most states and I know light bars mounted on top of bull bars are illegal 🤔
@nordic5490

Yes, all states except WA
@Smokeyr67
@Smokeyr67 19 күн бұрын
@@nordic5490 They're legal in QLD as long as they're no further out than your headlights, there's no height restriction. Also, if you use black covers on them they're no longer considered lights so you can mount them and just not use them on the road.

So bugs get in the way of light but the grill doesn't?
@lastknownlocation8760
@lastknownlocation8760 2 жыл бұрын
You lose more light from having the lights behind your grill than you do from having a few insects on them. Even at higher engine RPM your alternator will still probably not keep up with the amount of current the lights will draw if you have that many. Wattage divided by voltage equals amperage, so it’s easy to work out whether your alternator is up to it or not
@Ronny_Dahl
@Ronny_Dahl 2 жыл бұрын
My alternator is upgraded for this reason, the lights behind the grill are just filling the mid gap the roof does most of the work.

Just chuck 2 Narva Ultima's on ditch the rest. Big distance lights are bloody useless if you want to combat fatigue 400 metres of good even light is the go.

I am sure Kangaroos have a habit of jumping out onto the middle of the road after something has gone past them...so many times I've seen them just stepping out onto the road when I turn my HighBeams on after passing oncoming traffic. they act as if they are trying to figure out what the F... that was. I also recon they play: Let's Jump Over the Light Beams. .

With cheap lights I run a Kings number plate light on my small car it's better than the standard lights and worth every cent. It doesn't the job and couldn't justify spending the extra $$$ for a number plate light bar unless I was buying a brand new 4wd. If I get the cheap temporary tow car I'll be throwing one on it too as it's better than nothing and can't justify spending $$$ on a $2-3k 4wd tow car which is for the 1300kg ski boat.

@@---hq2ix Curious, do people get away with non-approved bullbars? because they don't make them for many models, so you're out of luck if you have a less popular 4x4 or battlecar..
