This reminds me of what was done in Winky’s Workshop. He did this in conjunction with a mechanism to prevent the head from turning from side to side when it’s raised or lowered.

I saw a similar one elsewhere with a virticle brace on the same side as the sprocket, plus I have since seen Winkey's as well. My mod has ball Barings etc instead of bushes . Many mods will be similar, you need to find one that suits you & Your machine. BTW, Mine is a Alloy plate etc

Hello. I enjoyed these videos. I have a similar machine and did an almost identical mod to mine. I used a 24v wiper motor to power the chain with a double pole switch for up/down. It's not very fast, but very quiet. I changed to a smaller driven sprocket to increase speed. I also added a counterweight via pulleys to the head to make lifting easier. In process now of adding X power feed using a stepper motor. Also, If your mill is like mine, you will find tapped holes in top surface of column. You could add bolts to hold top cap in place to secure the rack from moving. Subscribed! Greetings from Pennsylvania, USA.

Thanks for your input. I know what you mean about the top end cap, I was going to put an extra bolt on it, but didn't due to Possible Interference when moving the Head assembly around to 45 to 90 degrees. I stayed with the drill to raise and lower the head assembly so not to have different voltages. My Mill is a straight 240v system, and doesn't have variable or reserve speed. After I finish the vertical Modification to stop side movement, I am thinking of fitting a 3 axis DRO, which means I am going to be searching for room. As you know all these things take time, but we will get there eventually.

That is elegantly simple. Nicely done! If I still had my mill drill I would do something similar. Seeing as it's my buddy's unit now, it might be a project to help him with though!

Hi Matty ..thanks for your comments. Definitely worth the effort of working out everything , & it works really well, & No tugging on the winder handle. Next mod should eliminate 99% side movement. Lol 😆 🤣 I hope lol

Nice one 👍 Do you have any ideas for a quick lock on the nuts that locks the head to the column? Would have been really nice not having to crank them both every time 😄

G'day Thanks for your comments. If you are referring to the two virtical lock nuts just infront of the main electrical. Motor. I looked at this point, & decided this was the strongest solution as is, because the studs in the main column, long as they are tightin & not loose they are a very strong solution because of the weight of the head assembly. Also it is a matter of loosening two nuts, then use the drill to go up or down to the correct place & relock the nuts . If you add the Virtical guide assembly then there is no side movement

Something wrong with the cut-off tool holder. It was bouncing up and down. It was easy to hear as well. You must have noticed it.

Thanks for your comment. The carbide was replaced with my last new one, which is the one you saw with the chatter. I couldn't get another one at the time, so I gently finished the job I was doing. When I had time with further investigation & a new carbide tip, I found the carbide holding groove on the holding blade had spread a couple of thousand's of an inch, causing the chatter with the New carbide insert. I put it in a vice & closed up the Insert Holding Groove, which held the Carbide tighter as should be, & sorted the problem out.

@@TedRoza The entire toolholder was flexing. It wasn't just the carbide bit. It looked like the QCTP wasn't locked tight. BTW, great video series; excellent job showing your techniques.

Why not just use the variable speed drill motor directly onto the shaft and eliminate the sprockets chain etc? Same result would be achieved right? Does the drill motor have enough power without the gearing reduction, just curious, and a great ingenious idea BTW!

Thanks for your question, It is greatly appreciated. When the original handle was used, because of the gearing the weight of the Head assembly tends to force the the Head Assembly to move left & right . Therefore using a 9 to 1 or 10 to 1 ratio It not only takes the heavy torque ratio out of the equation using a small or heavy torque drill, It makes it easy, or less torque or stress on the upward or lifting of the Head Assembly. My next modification will be to make a special sliding Virticle brace assembly to stop side movement. I hope this answers your question.

I need to do this for my milling machine. What tool holder is that you're using for the cutoff tool? That is awesome with the relief cut for the tool to flex slightly

Hi Steve. The Blade is Kennametal Hertel, which is a German Brand. A2BNSN26 J03 / 387026-030 Tool Holder is Kennametal A2 TEN2020X26 , this has a 3/4" or 20mm flat that goes into the quick change or other tool post. There are cheaper brands on Ebay. Long as the quick change has a "V" groove locator in it.

Hi Trevor. I will have to see where I got them from, If you use a 9 or 10 to 1 ratio, that will work fine Have a look at the video, I think that goes deeper in depth of asssembly & welding etc

The Large sprocket is a 60 Tooth #35 ( chain pitch ) which is 186mm O.D. with a center hole of 50.8mm I.D. 4 bolt holes approx. 51.5 mm apart & 73mm across the opposite corners. The Holes are 10mm dia. This Larger gear I purchased on Ebay, which was cheaper. The Drive Gear is Approx. 35mm #35 with Approx.10 Teeth.. Which works out to 6: 1 Ratio.. The ratio is dependent on what you want. I bought the drive gear at a gear & chain, Baring Establishment. It's up to you where & how you purchase these, it all is depends where you are situated, & what Country, which makes it Price dependent. I hope this helps
