Yeah, it was cool for me to see him explain how he works nowadays anyway. But despite what he says the sound has nothing to do with the old days. He is basically making pop here. Which is what you need to do in order to make a living I suppose.

Just watched this now, still good tips. I'd be interested to know if he always just sets his two RBass to 40hz and 80hz no matter what key the song is in. I always try to work with the key, but I'd be curious to hear from others who might disagree with me on that, and why. Also, I wonder if that's an Eventide preset he describes at 29:00, or if it's a custom setting. Sounds like he's talking about a +12/-12 semitones for those end words.

I thought so too. I think we are not in the 80ties.
@OrganicGreens
@OrganicGreens 9 жыл бұрын
I dont know i eq my kicks in the same way only without the crazy boost on the low end at 40hz. I like my bass guitar or synth to take care of anything below 30-40hz depending on the song. If theres no real base instrument its usually an tuned 808.
@dosage13
@dosage13 9 жыл бұрын
30hz is inaudible anyway.. pretty sure he meant cuts around 80-120hz that actually removes the bass from the kick
@OrganicGreens
@OrganicGreens 9 жыл бұрын
dosage13 You hear down to 20hz. Its not that audible but you feel it in you chest more than you here it.
@jeromelester8
@jeromelester8 9 жыл бұрын
dosage13 Not really. I can hear 16 Hz, because my custom made hi-end loudspeakers can deal with it (26Hz -3db)I like the subharmonic content. You have to go eventually one step forward or backward to hear it - the round sinewave is that big. The deepest note from a piano is a C2 =16,4Hz. The kickdrum is boosted normally between 60(H1) and 80 Hz(E). google: Kick-drum Processing Tips - Sound On Sound

Good video, but I just wanted to clarify something. At 16:35, he seems to be confused on how the Dyn3 compressor's sidechain input works. He claims he has it set to "compress the bass and a bit of the top end" when actually he has the HF rolling off everything above 10k and the LF everything below 400, so he's actually doing the opposite. He seems to be switching the functions of the HF and LF filters. In addition, he suggests that the two filters are able to "cross over". However, since the signal goes to the HF filter first, then the LF, this is just wrong. If you were to set it how he described, the HF cutting above 400 and the LF rolling of below 10k, you would have eliminated all signal going to the sidechain. Finally, it is not like a mulitband, because a multiband actually does split the signal like a crossover, and has separate compressors for each band. The compression on the Dyn3 affects the entire signal.
