Dad was skeptical when I told him I'd bought him an album. He was used to me blasting everything from Third World to AC/DC back then. From the first bar he was hooked, and loved this LP till the day he left us a decade later. He was a crooner back in the 60s, this was his home musical turf. Still can't play it without being reduced to tears, the memory of his surprise and absolute delight with this incredible music comes back so vividly. Thank you Linda, RIP dad. 💙

This is a number of years back, but when I heard that Linda Ronstadt was putting out an album of 1940s music, I bought it out of curiosity. After hearing it, I thought that it was fantastic. She really does have a great voice and the slower tempo 1940s music allows everyone to hear it,

I knew who Linda Ronstadt was, of course - going back to the Stone Ponies - but I didn't sit up and take notice until she recorded with Nelson Riddle, singing songs by Johnnie Burke, Ira Gershwin and Irving Berlin. This was someone with vision way beyond pop music of the moment, beyond all the others. Class production, iconic album.

I'm just glad she did sing these songs especially now with Parkinson Disease that has kept her from singing. I'm happy she took the opportunities to sing her Hispanic Culture songs, Songs of the 40s and she did Opera from "the Pirates of Penzance" which she delighted everyone. Thank God for her beautiful voice which she left us with so many wonderful songs to listen to.

I remember being so excited to find out what Pop Standards were and rushed home with Linda Ronstadt's 'What's New' CD and in the quiet of my room with headphones on I began to understand just how much I had missed out on with such classic songs that at one time dominated the air waves. Linda's talent placed a bright light back on these great tunes.

It doesn't get any better than this. One would never think Ronstadt/Riddle would work but it did to perfection. At the time of the release, I had 10,000 in stereo equipment. Can you imagine the magnificent sound in the first play? I cried. Yes, it was recorded for a boom box, not good equipment but I didn't care. I listened to it 1000 times and the sequel albums. This was an album that takes its place with Ella and Nelson, Weston, and Stafford. The solos by Johnson, Cooper, and Welsch were superb.

Got to share... I was enlisted in the Air Force from 1980-84. Was ever so lucky to get the crypto linguist job. Meant I studied Russian at DLI in Monterey, CA! For one year! All of my classmates were similar to me - a bit above average intelligence with quirky tastes and humor. I was introduced to SO many musical tastes and artists! Was a very special, magical time. When I got to my first duty assignment, Eielson AFB Alaska (near Fairbanks) this album came out! And I think I was the only one out of my dorm to buy it! Didn't care since it was simply brilliant! I would get drunk and fall asleep to it. I really remember an interview with Nelson Riddle who said the only problem they had making the album was the fact that it was difficult for her to "slow down" her tempo since she was used to pop! I always remembered that for some reason. The whole album is good and that is a RARITY! I would buy an album for one song and usually I was lucky to find one more good song on it! Not this old gem! Hard to believe it is 40 years old!

Couldn't get enuff of this superb quality of Gershwin tunes ; I admit I was never big fan of Linda due to same ol' played out radio stuff But i luv her beautiful voice n this album was classic Wish her the best to fight that Parkinson's that took her voice n stability away... My brother n uncle suffered in different ways n passed n it's brought on by bad gut !! U must change diet n stop thinking negative n let this demon win ... Sad to see a man not be able to carry on as a man anymore n give up on life which my brother did ad I watched his customers flake out n not come by for a haircut anymore ! TY for listening , praying they'll be better ways than zombie pills to "cure" the symptoms . God Bless Peace

LINDA RONDSTADT and the NELSON RIDDLE ORCHESTRA formed an incomparable ensemble whose chemistry bordered on PERFECTION, from the very first time. For anyone passionate about music and beautiful songs performed with so much TALENT, it was like a daydream, we were literally transported in the forties, at a time when the CHARM and the GREAT CLASS, the real one, not that of the ridiculous exhibitionists of Today who have no idea of the true meaning of these "words", were characteristic of great singers such as Billie HOLLIDAY, Etta JAMES or groups such as the ANDREW SISTERS, THE SUPREMES or THE PLATTERS. Linda is and will remain a wonderful singer with that bewitching tone of voice that characterized her so well and who would not have fallen in love with such a SHINNING STAR seeing her in her performances that many will remember with a deep nostalgia for the time gone by? We will not forget you, dear Linda, we will love you forever ...

I was always a romantic and always loved the music from 1900s to 1950s. When I bought my first car at 21 I made it a 2 seat convertible. On a warm summer night with a date next to me this was a top choice for driving and parking by the beach or under a NYC bridge with moonlight shining on the water.

When I heard the song "What's New" I couldn't believe she sang those songs I love which I know "Barbara Streisands" sang some of those songs from the 40s and Broadway tunes too. However, I just love these beautiful songs that have been written by great composers of that time. I especially love - I'll See Be Seeing You" as well as "Starlight Serenade."

A long time ago, when I was a kid, a friend of mine was generously going to copy a commercial cassette tape of his to a blank tape that I gave him. I assumed he had a dual cassette deck but to my shock and dismay, all he did was play his original cassette on his single tape deck player and use a really junky portable cassette deck to do the recording...by placing it in front of his speakers. When playing the music back from my newly acquired tape, I could hear his mom in the background doing the dishes. The sound quality I'm hearing in this video is very similar to what I was hearing back then...minus the dishes.

Maybe there are other singers who can match her in big band classics, or maybe in hard rock, or maybe in country and western, or maybe some singer is better at pop music, or even opera, MAYBE. But Linda R was an overwhelming hit with all of these genres along with being number one forever in Mexican Mariachi. OOPPSS, I forgot she sang with the Muppets. For real.
