Catalog number: VIS 201.0600
In this interview, Ronnie Rondem recalls his service in the U.S. Army during and after the Vietnam War. He remembers growing up in Norway and immigrating to the United States with his family when he was fifteen. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army. He was unable to join his unit on their first deployment to Germany because he was a resident alien, so he worked in the immunization clinic at Fort Bliss. After leaving the Army for a period, he re-enlisted in order to attend Officer Candidate School. He describes his first tour in Vietnam and recalls many of his fellow soldiers sleeping in coffins their first night in country because they were billeted in a coffin warehouse. He describes several incidents from his first tour in Vietnam, including falling into a punji stake pit. After returning home, he commanded a unit at Fort Carson that was deployed twice to Chicago, the first time in response to the riots following Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination and the second time in response to protests at the Democratic National Convention. He describes his second tour in Vietnam, this time assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. He recalls watching the 1969 Battle of Hamburger Hill from his base several miles away. He comments in detail on many of the leaders under which he served, including Len Martin Hanawald and William Westmoreland. He describes his post-Vietnam work with the Reserves and National Guard and describes his post-military work and family.

Atlanta History Center, thank you for conducting and for releasing these excellent veteran interviews. They're among the best, if not the best, interviews I've found on the Internet. Keep 'em coming!

George McDowell Have you seen the Vietnam Stories from The Billings Montana Gazzete? It’s called Vietnam Voices. It is a real good series done about Vietnam Vets from Montana or with Montana ties. You should look into it if you haven’t seen it.

@@johnalves3583 Hey, John! Yep, sure have! They are very good, too. I live in Bozeman, Mt, not too far from Billings. I really enjoyed those interviews. Thanks!

Can the producers of these Atlanta History Centre please do something about the poor recording levels on these interviews. The sound levels are not balanced, the interviewers Voice level is good but the recording level of the guest is much too low. This is an issue not only with this session but in almost all of their interviews.

Good evening, Mr. Boyle-- We are working hard to catalog and make accessible online all of the nearly 800 veterans' interviews currently in our collection. Many of those being uploaded right now, including this interview, were conducted almost a decade ago when our equipment and expertise were limited. We hope that we have learned a lot over the years and that the sound quality is much better in the interviews we conduct today. Thank you for taking the time to comment and for your interest in our Veterans History Project.

I am interested to know at what point in his military career did he become a U.S. citizen?

J. Wolfe interesting question. You would think he would have to take some classes to become a citizen. I don’t know the answer to that but I’d like to know.

How can you get accepted into OCS when you got poor grades at high school and no completed degree, existing enrollment nor intention to enrol?

Maybe this is why so many young men were killed in in the Vietnam conflict.

I didn't watch this video. Did Ronnie talk about how illegitimate the Vietnam war was for Americans to be in? Why it was a mistake he was there? How about war crimes committed by the US against the Vietnamese people over 10 years? Let's not ignore the criminal activity of US servicemen against their own US officers...also known as "fragging". Or...is the interviewer asking him what the "scariest" thing was for him in Vietnam...or what was his favorite animal in Vietnam?
