Summary:
Ronnie Montrose is a legend amongst guitar players. With his eponymous quartet he defined the sound of guitar-driven hard rock for a generation of players at a time when most American bands were being outpaced by the ferocious riffing of their counterparts across the pond. But while the success of Montrose garnered him great acclaim and helped to bring vocalist Sammy Hagar to the world stage, Ronnie was never content to follow one path for too long, and his career would see him continue to stretch his playing and explore many different styles as a solo performer, band member and session guitarist.
More recently, Ronnie had returned to his rock 'n' roll roots, touring steadily with a powerful rhythm section comprised of Steve Brown and Dan McNay (drums and bass respectively) along with vocalist Randy Scoles, who calls to mind the classic singers of '70s hard rock like Paul Rodgers. It was this group that we were lucky to capture in a truly one-of-a-kind session, recorded just before some warm-up gigs leading up to the filming of Ronnie's latest DVD release at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, California. During our recording, the Vault was honored to host many of the band's family and friends in celebration of not only the session, but also the guitarist's 64th birthday. It was a very special evening, and we are pleased to present to you the results: Ronnie Montrose, in one of his final recorded performances.

Simple, Badass, Tone from hell, Ronnie Montrose was a force back in the early 70’s. He doesn’t get enough love. The 1973 self titled album Montrose was one of the decades BEST rock albums.

So sad ,depression you never know what its like unless you have it ,you see Ronnie on stage looking like he is having a good time ..but deep down he was probably hurting inside .. losing his uncle and his dog on top of this possibly tipped him over the edge ..His music will live on ,some of the Best Rock Riffs / songs in history ..The simplicity of the riffs with a great sense of rhythm is what made them ..thanks for the music Ronnie ...i wish i could have met you in person ..R.I.P.

Sammy Hagar's evil twin !! In 73 I saw Ronnie playing for the Edgar Winter group. Was blown away by Ronnie's playing and antics in his white jump suit. A year later saw Montrose warming up for Humble Pie. Montrose tore the place up, Denny kicked a hole in his bass drum, the roadies hauled Humble Pie's bass drum out for him, threw a towel over the "Humble Pie" logo and they kept going. They blew the roof off that auditorium that night. Ronnie is unforgettable.

Ronnie had a great memory for his fans. I met him at a show in Sacramento where he opened for Trower on. the Speed of Sound tour. When a mutual friend introduced us, the first thing he did was HAND ME HIS GUITAR! Neck like a baseball bat. He just knew I played. I thanked him for all the great music, and told him I loved his tone. He offered to sell me the rig when the tour was over. I took him up on that, and used it for years. Every time I saw him after that, it was first name basis. He made you feel important enough to remember. I loved him for that as much as for his incredible chops and tasty phrasing!
