I understand Jimmy's point about Joe but it's rather deep. Joe came from billiards which was a subtle and beautiful game. His snooker would have been imbued with that, too. He probably saw the likes of Higgins, White etc as 'crash bang wollop'. merchants. Add to that the 20 to 30 yr hiatus and it probably looked like a different game to him. I'm guessing he would have been early to mid 70's too. It's probably similar to the way Willie Smith saw snooker back in the day.

Joe davis won the world snooker title 15 times not even hendry could go well past his tally. Joe and fred davis are the only siblings to have won the world snooker championship. They are great players.

Say what you want about Joe Davis but his book How I Play Snooker is insightful and is certainly worth a read for some useful tips. His other book Complete Snooker is next on my list. Not to mention he was making centuries into his 70's, could play with both hands and back in the day the ivory balls were heavier and the cloths slower but technically speaking he was up there with the best and managed to achieve a lot by only be able to see properly through his left eye.

Reminds me quite recently Ray Reardon was in the news for making a century at his local golf club in his 90s. Doesn’t get spoken about as much as the rest of the greats but he’s right up there.

Davis WAS A MEAN SPIRITED PERSON!!! Period! If he thought you could beat HIM (JOE) you were never going Pro!!Period!! ANYWAYS Joe Davis would be 50-100 ranked now a days!! MAYBE? But that was then? The game has progressed 100 fold since then!! I am from Canada and A fellow named George Chenier hammered Davis in Bermuda? (FROM MEMORY)??? ALSO the Worlds were challenge Matches for 30-40 yrs so not a very good tell tale sign of Davis' ability!! There were numerous people in Canada alone who could have beaten Davis all the time!!and they never came to England!!We had numerous players here that were top quality players that just played and worked to get by!!Same as in England!!!
