I think it's quite difficult for someone who hasn't played on a Pro Snooker table to appreciate how difficult this is, not to mention at this speed. Even ordinary club tables are easier in most ways (depending on how you want to go in your break building). But I think for the most part, it's the speed thing that's most apparent with this particular break. Most professionals would find it fairly difficult to do what O'Sullivan did here in less than ten minutes, let alone make it look so easy in 5 minutes.

Everyone needs to play Snooker before reacting to Ronnie playing Snooker. If you don't then it's impossible to appreciate what he just did. In fact I would challenge most Bar Room Pool players to get 5 consecutive balls on a Snooker table. I used to play quite a lot in my youth, (Pool and Snooker). I could quite easily clear a Pool table but I'd always be happy with 5 consecutive balls on a Snooker table. The level of precision required is just on a different level.

Everything here is correct, but just to be clear about the common terms (so that people aren't confused when discussing/watching commentary with those more familiar with the game). The Cue Ball is the same, but all the other six balls that arn't red are collectively known as the _colours_ . The _red_ balls are simply called that, they are not _colours_ (despite them being coloured red!). This is clearly only as a means to differentiate them from the _colours_ . I can certainly see why this might be confusing for the uninitiated, but as long as you can appreciate that those three categories (The Cue Ball, the Red Balls and the Coloured Balls) serve completely different functions within the game, then it should become clear. In fact, these terms would be among the very first things I'd teach a person about Snooker!

In England, we usually call the 'Red and Yellow' game, '8 Ball Pool' to differentiate it from American '9 Ball' . The small 6 foot tables fit in pubs better, so it makes sense. In Snooker, the object and/or the cue ball doesn't have to hit a cushion ('Rail' in Pool) even if you don't 'Pot' ('Make' or 'Hole' in Pool) the ball. This rule often catches either player of each game out, when trying the other sport. Both 9 Ball, and (real) Snooker are excellent games.

In the UK (I'm Scottish, it's not just England you know) we just call it pool. We differentiate by calling the American game, American pool. Of course you are correct if we are speaking technically though, but the average person on the street when they say pool, they mean the UK one and when speaking of the American version we just say American pool

what id say about pool is that there is a extremely fine line between the best and worst player. Of course the best player will win more often but the line is so small because the shots arent particularly difficult when you know how to play. Its much more of a coin toss. In pool only crazy off cushion shots will be missed. In snooker the distance and spin you need to impart on every shot make even potting balls difficult, the pockets are also smaller. Therefore the winner of a snooker game will be the better player. I feel there is an awful lot more luck in pool based on the break off and such as if you pot off the break you'll usually win and if you dont you will usually lose at the top level. Because of this there really isnt much entertainment in it for me

The rule is that if you pot a red ball then you can choose which coloured ball to pot next. Obviously the way to get the highest possible score is to keep potting black with every red, until the reds are all gone, then the remaining colours have to be potted in order of colour./value, finishing with the black.

A guide to Snooker (for those who know pool!). And particularly for the uploader :-D First the terms. The Cue Ball is the same, but all the other six balls that aren't red are collectively known as the _Colours_ . The _Red_ balls are simply called that, they are not _colours_ (despite them being coloured red!). This is only as a means to differentiate them from the _colours_ . So that it can be said there are three categories (The Cue Ball, the Red Balls and the Coloured Balls) each serving completely different functions within the game. The players take it in turns to try to score as many points as possible (or try to keep the other player from doing the same) before all the balls are _potted_ (pocketed), or to force a concession. Points are accrued thusly, one red is potted after which the player is entitled to attempt to pot one colour. A player can remain at the table (keeping the other player off the table) for as long as they continue to pot one red followed by one colour in succession, whenever a player pots two or more balls in succession their turn is called a _break_ , so long as they continue to make legal shots. When a turn or break ends in an illegal shot the opponent receives penalty points (these can vary depending on the specific illegal shot or _foul_ ). A player can also attempt to play a _safety shot_ at any time during their turn, which (although it will mean the end of their turn) is designed to keep the opponent from scoring. Whenever a red is potted, it remains in the pocket, whenever a colour during a _break_ is potted it is returned to its own unique spot or _re-spotted_ . This goes on until there are no longer any more reds on the table. At which point (after the last remaining permitted colour is potted and re-spotted) the player can attempt to pot the last remaining colours in order of ascending value. The balls are each worth a differing amount of points. The Reds are each 1 point, the Yellow 2, Green 3, Brown 4, Blue 5, Pink 6 and the Black 7. Meaning that with the absence of a _free ball_ situation (I won't go into that here as it's not so necessary for a beginner) the Maximum Break a player can achieve is 147pts. 15pts _red balls_ +105pts (7x15) _one black ball for every red ball_ +27pts _colours in succession_ . Despite the nature of the scoring and that there are *always* a known possible amount of points _on the table_ this all does not include any penalty points which might be incurred. This means that the conclusion of any rack or _frame_ may be somewhat unclear when there are still balls remaining on the table (other than the cue ball!). In this case, the frame ends when one player deems the deficit in points insurmountable due to both, the lack of points on the table AND the implausibility of enough penalty points. When there are still balls remaining on the table the frame only officially ends when either one of the players _concedes_ . But when there is only the cue ball remaining, the winner can be declared by the _referee_ as the player with the most points. A frame may be played on its own, but when the players are of a particular standard it is usually necessary for them to play a number of frames (best of) in order to properly determine the better player. This is, like in pool, due to the possibility of either player simply 'not getting a look in' during any given frame.

There is no science behind it. The scoring system works the following way: When you come to the table you need to play with and ideally pot a red ball after that you have to play with one of the colors which would ideally be the black but it is not mandatory the most important thing is to keep the break going by potting red then color, red then color and so on. Once a red is potted it remains potted when a color is potted it is returned to the table if there are still red on the table. 147 is the conventional maximum amount of points you can score: 15 Reds (worth 15 points) potted with 15 blacks (worth 105 points) after the last black the remaining colors must be potted in the following exact order yellow (2 points) Green (3 points) Brown (4 points) Blue (5 points) Pink (6 points) and Black (7 points) which results in 147. Back in the day they would give 147000 pounds additional prize for anyone who would achieve this so it is a pretty rare and special event.

Snooker has nothing to do with Maths, you simply pott a red then try to pott a colour (yellow=2,green=3,brown=4,blue=5,pink=6,black=7) worth the most points then repeat & put it on the scoreboard as you go. You do not have to finish on a certain number, your total is your score, the maximum is 147 (without a opponent foul on his first shot but that's another story). Snooker tables are big 12 foot long by 6 foot wide & have small pockets.....it is a very hard game to be good at compared to pool (please try it if you don't believe me). I play both & after a game of Snooker- Pool seems easy & small but that can be a relief - they are totally different games where pool is nearly all about potting balls Snooker can be very tactical with position of balls. P.S. DO not drink alcohol & play snooker as it can be frustrating.

Well, it's a fair bit about Maths in my opinion.Think about Geometry.
@schmoozingkaboodle5405
@schmoozingkaboodle5405 5 жыл бұрын
laubry ; You play with accrued judgement from practice of the table not by working out degrees of angles, a snooker table doesn't bounce the ball off cushions at the exact angle a light 'bouncing' off a mirror would (for example)- its angle is affected by speed, power & spin which you have to judge. But you are partly correct that maths can be used but in scoring & working out how many snookers you could need or which colour to play for to avoid leaving a snooker to put your opponent into, I did speak a little too soon about maths but it's not used for angles as it's not an exact science & angles can be made more acute or obtuse as I mentioned.

he has to pot red then colour red then colour. so when you pondered is going pink/blue there a couple of times that was not an option. and in this case there was no "math" required, he was just potting all the reds with a black so it would automatically add up to 147. the math is only required if the frame is not yet already won. if your break getting difficult you might work out how many point are still available to the opponent before deciding how to play your next shot. in this case the frame was won early on and no maths was required.

Stupid murakana. It's red -> coloured -> red -> coloured... until all reds are gone. You can't go red -> red or coloured -> coloured. After that you have to go in point order. Yellow is worth least amount and black most. There's no math required to get to 147.

The Star tables seem to play kindly and let in shots that have no right to go in. The fairest table is the one they use at the Champion of Champions.
