I absolutely love my Roof Top Tent, and a lot of the con's you say just aren't a real problem or there is a work-around for it. I have an annex room so that gives a lot more open storage area and another place to put a bed if necessary. Calls of nature are easily dealt with by a P-bottle, there are many different designs on the market. Weather is also not a problem, we've had soft shell RTT's in 70mph gales, held up much better than the ground tents (both failed/broke) not one area of damage on the 3 RTT's that were at various angles. Angling into the wind is a good means of lessening wind "flap" too. As far as MPG, positioning is everything, but most people that run with RTT's are accepting that they will do 1-2mpg less because of the tent, if you get it right you can actually improve mpg in a limited amount of cases. I really don't like a lot of the "pull-out" shell style hard top tents, they seem the worst of all designs for a few reasons, a full wedge or box RTT is better in the hard top styles. Mine is a HM tourer so a soft cover tent. There are ways to protect the cover from damage so again, not a big problem. As always, it is each to their own, we need the diversity to create better designs and evolve the way camping works. Discussion is good. 🙂

I had a soft shell RTT on my old Prado for a few years, honestly really liked it, apart from the fact that I could not park off street at my house without removing the tent (two person job). When I sold the Prado and bought a Jeep with a useless 60kg roof rating, I sold the tent. As much as I enjoyed it, I don't think I would buy another.

I have a James Baroud RTT. Yes it is expensive but absolutely brilliant. 100% water proof, weighs only 60kg, very tight so no flapping in the wind. My wife and I have slept in it over 150 times. The worst thing about RTT's is the ladder. I have built a platform and have scissor steps which makes it perfect.

@@AlloffroadAu Mine is 140 x 200 external so take, say 5cm off that. I'm 187cm. They now do an XL which is 160 x 224 external. There is also a company in Perth WA making custom size hard shell RTTs. They did one for one of the Wild Cats basketball players.

I have a soft shell on my trailer with a 50mm mattress with the issues you mentioned. Its the Dune with gas struts and takes 1:50 to erect. Adding a 28mm Kmart underlay solved all sleep problems and it provides great sleep for my 66 YO body.
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good solution, for a CT I may even consider a soft shell as I usually don't pack in daily

@@AlloffroadAu you may find this youtube interesting. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e92Ul7OD28epZHU.html. It shows how quick set up and pack up is in this soft roof rooftop. A clever youtube. It also has the advantage of full length side access which is ideal for our expedition trailer and the advantage that it isnt wedge shaped so making it more suited to tall people. Size is similar to the one you reviewed but 1200 wide or there is a wider 1400 model which I found too wide for expedition trailer. Also the advantage that it is nowhere near as high as the average packed up soft roof and I keep all my bedding in it except pillows

Hi Stefan .The spring awning poles on your preview don't appear to be tensioning the small rear awning . I would slide the brackets right to the end . The holes for the spring loaded supports face outways so max tension is achieved to eliminate water pooling and wind flapping.
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu Жыл бұрын
good idea and yes the brackets are movable, in the pic I do have the entrance fly hooked up to the poles as well and that fly is a little shorter and will prevent the awning from completely being stretched. If I unhook the fly door it's more taught

Check out the Canyon off road RTT, based in Western Australia. I thought about buying a RTT for the recent Simpson trip, and would have purchased one of these, but delivery time couldn't be met. Big attraction was the size and 75mm mattress.

Hi Stefan Gordigear is based on the Gold Coast, they have a very old KZfaq channel where you can see a very good rundown on the construction etc. I bought the larger one which give me a bigger than king size bed so have lots of room up top for clothes etc. I also bought the tent which hangs down from the entrance opening and encloses the ladder. It provides great privacy and a place out of the weather if you need it for cooking or whatever. The tent also has an opening which allows access to the vehicle. I have mine on my Disco 4 and use it with my 270 Rhino awning and I access the RTT from the driver’s side. So I have shelter from both sides and the rear of the car thanks to having both items. It is excellent quality made from high quality materials. Not trendy but very good product. Cheers

Generally all the same Chinese built tents with someone painting there logo on it and flogging off for 15x . They have there place for certain people tho I would possibly consider one on a loop of Australia or trip over a month long , I like my camp detached from the vehicle as I tend to explore areas and like having base . I believe most people would be better off with a $150 double swag.

If it only takes a few minutes to pack up a rtt then I don't see a problem. My issue with leaving all my camping gear at base camp is security. Of course you could spend some time to pack that up, close the tent and lock everything up to make things a bit more secure I guess.

The best rooftop tent is no rooftop tent/ this is my personal opinion . I always sleep in the car. This is for the traveling / overlanding what i do the best (Sweden / Norway). When you have a trailer behind the car, then is a hard shell rooftop tent great.

I have this tent and can’t say I’d recommend it. Mattress is way to thin and might aswell not be there and spent one night in the rain and woke to the mattress bedding and pillows all being wet, lifted the mattress and the whole floor was covered in water
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu Жыл бұрын
Yes, the mattress is definitely too thin. Strange with being wet though, I had the tent outside for a few storms and had zero water ingress, however, I had no mattress in I assume your sleeping bag, body or mattress maybe had contact with the walls, and it seeped through there? Thank you for sharing your experience.

I sure would test it if they provided me one but would not buy one at this stage. I heard the actuators can be a bit iffy but that's not first-hand experience. I sure like the 2.1m length and 100mm mattress

That is a good point Adam J makes. You ask your viewers for support with ‘buy me a coffee’ so why don’t you give more of the gear you don’t use/want or need away for free to the people who watch your videos? I’d guarantee this would get you more viewers & subscribers thus leading to more Patrons. Just a thought. Thanks Stephan.
