Which subwoofers are right for your room size? Single or dual? Cubic feet? I get these questions regularly, here are the surprising answers... Vv Click "SHOW MORE" vV
"The List", explosive, deep impact subwoofers, with truly game changing bass: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subw...
At least once a week, I get questions about room size. It's common to calculate square footage, or cubic footage of a room, when trying to decide. I think it's a waste of time, if you're doing it right.
The only time room size is an issue is when the room is MASSIVE. That's simply because in a massive room, you might need to turn the volume up higher in general. More output potential, or headroom, keeps you from bumping into the limits of the subs at higher listening levels.
Otherwise, as long as you can fit dual MATCHED subs (*from The List), you can run them, getting the same benefits as someone in a large room would: More explosiveness as you go up in wattage and size.
There are caveats to this. The PB-3000 is nearly as explosive as the PB-4000. The PB-2000 Pro is noticeably more explosive than the PB-2000 original. The PB-16 Ultras are the most explosive subs I've heard yet.
The NEW PB-1000 Pro's are on par with the PB-2000 original, in a smaller, more versatile package. sub101.link/PB-1000-PRO
The issues for small rooms will have to be dealt with, no matter which subs you get. Boundary gain is the big culprit. XT32, or similarly regarded "top shelf" room correction can help you control it, as I have in the RV.
I see people saying, "That sub is way too big for your room, and you don't need duals in such a small area."
WAY WRONG ANSWER!!
Matched dual subs create constructive interference, cutting down on dead spots dramatically. Room size does not impact this in an appreciable way.
My Bass Hack video methods, with a good pair of matched, deep bass subs, are seriously game changing, more than the subs can do on their own without my hacks.
I don't say that lightly.
The Distance Hack, Crossover Hack, Large vs Small Hack, Gain Hack, and the Adjusting Subs By Ear Hack, in that order, will dramatically improve your bass experience, with no real negative consequence.

I recently bought a Cinema 40 and you explained the setup in a very informative way with a little humor thrown in. I look forward to delving into many more of your topics and contributing to your channel $$.Stay off the coffee!😊

Hey. What did you set your gain hack to for the SVS PB2000, and decibels in the receiver? I first had the gain knob at the halfway point and turned the sub decibels up to -3 (Audyssey had it at -8). I knew the sub was wonderful from the deep bass and how well it blended, but never really got "punched" in my chair. I never really felt much "impact," until I watched your gain hack video. I definitely can tell a difference now, but when I previewed the Pacific Rim trailer, there was a moment when the bass fluttered at a low frequency. How would you suggest I "calibrate" from here? If I turn the gain down, I won't be feeling as much "impact/punch" but I assume you've dealt with this and possibly solved it?

I agree I have a small gaming room where I watch movies and play games and I have the SVS pb 1000 pro and 2 klipsch 10 inch 300 W subwoofers and I integrated it with the Denon 4700 and it is just incredible. The SVS 1000 is the icing on the cake the base is just I can’t even describe it. is almost like you’re feeling the action through your body. when movie scene throws an explosion you feel it I never felt anything like it it’s incredible I can’t wait to get two more SVS PB 2000 in my front room which is the living room it’s going to be amazing I also have four subs in the front room two of them I’m going to replace with the pb 2000 Nice review

Love your videos and tips! This one totally resonates with me. I have a small room 11x10 a with a 15inch Triad subwoofer. Looking to add a 2nd sub but not sure which one to pair. Would love to get 2 identical ones but should I look for another 15inch sub or a smaller one can also work, budget also being a major constraint.

Been watching your videos for a while now and wanted to get some advice regarding choosing a sub. I had a PB 2000 in the living room and sold it due to WAF as it was in living room taking a bit more space (4m x 3.5m) and so now have 2 x SB 1000s which fit easily. The sb 1000 is not in your list as you have mentioned you prefer the ported subs over sealed ones. I got the sb 1000s just before the pro version came out here in Australia. I wanted to ask you would getting 2 x PB 1000 pro be better than 2x SB 1000s? Thank u

Hey I just wanted to ask you a question. I know you recommended two pb3000 for my room in a previous video. Do you use REW a lot? I am new to having a real hole theater set up. Honestly is it that hard to dial in 2 subwoofers in a room that is pre treated with panels or bass traps? If you can give me advice it is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, really enjoy your vids (from the UK). Just a quick question please, Audyssey suggests a 75dB sub match at the start but to me that is far too low. Do you set yours to 75dB to run Audyssey and then go in and up the subs after, or do you run them hot from the start? I've tried it many ways but I prefer to ignore the Audyssey suggestion and run mine at 84dB from the start. Just seems to sound much better, but am I wrong doing this?? Thanks in advance.

Disguise not responding to any of the comments but yes that subwoofer would work but you definitely need a receiver and a great receiver to integrate the subwoofer with that sound bar and in your small room. But if you can go with two subwoofers that will eliminate dead spots and dead zones in your subwoofer sound feel

I have a 14'x14' room, in which I have tried many "cheap" systems, like the Pioneer VSX-832 5.1 channel. I ended up with a Yamaha RX-V6A 7.2 channel, for an extra $150ish (Edit: On sale)? So, I moved up. My speakers & subs are Andrew Jones 6 ohm 5.2 channels. I am going to purchase the Klipsch R12SWI 12", because as you’ve stated, I get a bad resonance in 1 corner. I've tried sound dampening which helped out the surround, but found that it's a dip in the floor in that entire corner, and the bass pools there, sounding muddy?... I have to go wireless because of the run. I do know that a couple floor speakers would probably work instead, but can't get those wireless 😅 You are correct, in a small room, you have to follow your ears, not some spreadsheet. Especially when you have openings, and irregular surfaces. Keep up the good work 👍🏽✌🏽

I recently bought two PB-1000 pros for my 250 ft^2 rectangular/enclosed theater room. I went through a bunch of measurements with REW to find the best placement for seat-to-seat consistency, with the best response curve. After applying some PEQ to tone down a big peak around 25 hz, I managed to get some pretty good measurements. The subs sound very nice, but lack the explosiveness I was hoping to achieve. I called SVS and they walked me through my Denon AVR-X2300W menus, but said I had it all set up correctly. They attenuated my mains a bit (effectively boosting sub gain relative to other speakers). They also had me apply PEQ gain at 50 hz to try and increase the amount of punch you feel. I'll admit it is pretty nice, but I am left wanting a bit more explosiveness. Would upgrading to PB-3000's give that to me? Or would I just be wasting my money? I'd also consider the monolith 15's, but they'd barely fit underneath my projector screen. I really want explosive, without being boomy and uncomfortable. (Also, can't afford dual PB-16 ultras, otherwise I'd go for it in a heartbeat). What do you recommend?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 3 жыл бұрын
Whatever fix you did to resolve the 25 hertz peak, undo it. That's exactly where you're explosiveness lives. It's okay to have that higher than the rest. If it's a huge peak, you might be too close to a wall (boundary gain). But you want the response curve line to slowly get louder as it goes deeper. What I do to increase the explosiveness on these subs is add a PEQ at 29hertz, +4.0 boost, 2.5 Q. Adjust the boost to flavor, up or down. The other thing is you might not have the subs turned up high enough. Disable the 50 hertz PEQ, and then follow my Adjusting subs by ear hack. The Distance Hack and the crossover hack are important too. Should wake it up a bit. Perfect response graphs don't always sound perfect. You should get a little more impact, and a little more satisfaction with those adjustments, but if not, and you still want some more explosiveness, dual PB-2000 Pro's or the dual PB-3000's will be more explosive. But before doing that, I would definitely try getting the right sound out of these first. You can also look at my Top 16 AVR Settings video. The adjustments I have in there is kind of a combination of hacks that I use.

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 3 жыл бұрын
I usually have to turn subs down after a few weeks. The spider and surrounds of the drivers relax a bit, and the subs become more efficient. As a result, the same level of power produces more output. Usually around 1 dB or so more output. Not sure about the depth changing, but it's possible I suppose. Interesting enough, over the course of several months, I kept needing to reduce the gain on the PB-16 Ultras. Overall, for me, I had to reduce the gain by 4 decibels. That's a lot. But it's a pretty stout driver, with a huge 8" voice coil. Makes sense in that regard. It just kept getting louder. But yeah, break in is a real thing. Even with towers and bookshelf speakers. It's not a massive difference, but it's usually noticeable to some degree.

Well, objectively speaking, if you are looking for a straightforward answer, then in my personal experience with our PB1000 Pro is that the default-10 is a great starting point for getting good bass after having done the Automated Calibration first. Our AVR-X2700 set -7db sub trim after the Calibration and then I dialed back in the SVS app from-15 for Calibration purposes to now using the default-10. Balanced and authoritative when it needs to be. Sometimes, depending upon content, I'd push it completely and set -4 or -5 to really get room shaking output. Acoustically treated theater room having dimensions of 16x12x9 feet. Hope this helps.

Great video as usual! How do you avoid things rattling in the RV or even in your HT?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 3 жыл бұрын
Another surprise for sure! I picked a diesel platform, because the chassis itself is super strong and solid. The RV has a Spartan Mountain Master bus chassis, and the frame rails are pretty substantial. Additionally, this particular RV has a full steel cage, not all do. Traditionally, diesel pushers (as they're called) are built to a higher standard than gasoline counterparts. I still expected rattles like crazy, but I only found 1!! Piece of tissue on the offending window screen, problem solved. I have way more rattles in the house. I chase them down and address them if I can, but the oven rattles in a way I can't seem to fix, but it's not major. Fixing rattles is basically putting something absorbent between the two surfaces that are making the noise. Face tissue, cork, yoga mat, or mouse pad, whatever makes sense for the situation. Subwoofer isolation helps a lot with wood floors for things that are close to the subs, but won't fix a rattle on the other side of the house. Isolation reduces the physical energy of the box moving, but does not change the sound energy. Thanks for a great question, I did a video on it too.

I don't think you would like going back to a single subwoofer. In your shoes, I would go with dual PB-2000 Pro's. They should sound a little more bottom heavy, which is ideal for theater. I think it brings music to life too. Be sure to follow my Bass Hack video series. You can run more gain on them than most subs, due to the response curve. Also, in the app, you can enable a PEQ at 29 hertz, 4+ dB boost at 2.5 Q. Try turning that PEQ on and off during the Accountant driveway shootout scene. You should notice a little more kick to the chest. I think you would enjoy them quite a bit.

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 3 жыл бұрын
Which subs are they? For sure, having a wired and a wireless subwoofer together is definitely a part of your problem. No question. The wireless adds a substantial delay. Room correction would register the wireless sub as much further away than it is, and that's because the wireless part has to package the signal, send it wirelessly, be received and unpackaged before it hits the subwoofer. Wired subs skip all of that. It's a matter of milliseconds, but that's all it takes to create a hot mess. Most AVR's are mono on both sub outs, which is what you want to get the best constructive interference. Any change in the subwoofer itself (mixed subwoofers, like a 10" and a 12" together) or changes to the signal coming out of the AVR will degrade the experience. The only things I find useful in discreet subwoofer outs are level and distance. Even then, I use the subwoofer's own gain control, and usually set the subs to the same distance anyway. If you can hardwire the wireless sub, that might go a long way. Run room correction again after that.

Let me know what sounds best, no change, or boosted and what level of boost sounds good. To achieve the depth and volume I'm after, dual PB-1000's would get the job done. No problem. I could definitely get the cops called on me with those. 😆 However, I'm looking for the premium experience. I really want people to be taken aback. The PB-2000's do that at the lowest price point as far as I can tell. Good hard kick. It's a good sweet spot.

That's a good choice, though I would still suggest duals, and utilize the Low Frequency Containment (or similar AVR feature) at night. A single will sound boomier to your neighbors. Long explanation, but that's my experience, and it makes total sense. Communication and being a good neighbor is usually a good idea. Use your best judgement, every situation is dynamic. Some neighbors are not people you want to communicate with. Watch for my upcoming video, you might find it relevant. I also did an apartment video.

I second Subwoofer101s comment regarding neighbourly communication - I doesn't hurt to let your neighbours know that they're welcome to ask you to turn it down if you ever bother them - it creates goodwill and tolerance ;) I actually did a "sound test" with my neighbour when I lived in an apartment so I knew what level was audible through the walls - it's remarkable low!

Hey I am looking to get dual subs. My room ( second floor ) is F shaped. From top to bottom it is 32 feet long. The first stem out is where my the tv/ home theater would be ( tv up against the longest wall. The area the home theater would be is 10x12x 6.5 with low vaulted ceilings. I was looking at svs subs. I want to do dual and have them placed flanking the center channel. I was looking at dual sb3000, dual pb3000 or dual sb4000. Or I was just looking at a single pb4000. Any advice you can give me would be fully appreciated. This is my first real serious home theater system.

I'm actually going to buy new subwoofers somewhere next month. I currently have a dual set of 10" sealed subs, and will be replacing them. I'm in a bit of a pickle though, I originally wanted dual 12" ported subs, however with a new couch coming along, one of them would be mostly blocked, and the other one isn't in a great spot either. Moving them around would make since, but the speakers have to be symmetrically placed (wife)... On the other hand if I get a single 15" (the monolith 15" THX) I'm able to place it in the "ideal" spot, the driver would be facing the main listening positions directly and there would be nothing blocking it. I'm hoping at some point I can pick up a second one, but judging from my wife....well it's probably never going to happen. Would it be better still to go with dual here?

@@alambe7275 After a lot of research on this topic I decided to go for the single 15" If you have a huge open room, 2 smaller subs won't cut it, best to get the single biggest sub you can at that point. Also, just adding a second sub without running it through something like a miniDSP and make sure they are properly setup, a second sub can lower your bass response. While a proper dual setup is better, it's not when it isn't done properly. I get the feeling many people online just copy/paste the advice from youtubers without any context.

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 3 жыл бұрын
You can be right up on it, or across the room. What's most important is that room correction is performed after any changes, and I would also employ my Distance Hack. Basically, it's the timing/delay that matters most. That's determined by room correction, and quantified by the distance setting in the AVR. If it was just listed as speaker delay, it would make no sense to the average listener, it would be a lot harder to figure out. Far more confusing than using distance to express the delay/timing values. Grab another PB-4000 if you can. Because of physics and the standing wave effect of a single subwoofer in an enclosed room, you aren't hearing everything the PB-4000 is producing. No matter where you sit, you will be missing something, even if your measurements say it's perfect. It also makes placement much less critical. Hopefully that helps!

Kind of tough because you're comparing sealed to ported. Ported typically has the advantage with home theater, ported subs are also more efficient. To get the same performance, a sealed subwoofer typically needs more power than a ported. And all of that said, with the app, you can do all kinds of fun things. It might be a wash.

Oh, but the PB-2000 Pro's are sooo good. Definitely more impact! I'm not 100% on the SB-3000, I have a problem with sealed subs, they cause uncomfortable pressure in my ears. Typically, ported also have a deeper sound, within the SVS line. You can alter that with the app, but I don't know if it will give the impact you want. It's possible to break even, which seems insane to say. Sealed require more power for the same output. So you need about double the power, roughly speaking. I wish I could give you a more definite answer, but the app and voice coil of the 3000 changes things a bit. I know the PB-2000 Pro's are epic. you can break up standing waves by angling the subwoofers so that the wave does not return directly to the speaker. In fact, your set up is the worst for standing waves.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 Жыл бұрын
Sorry to disagree. If you angle or move your subwoofer, you are not "breaking" a standing wave, you're just "shifting it". One frequency peak may go down, but another will rise in its place. Constructive interference is how you handle a standing wave, which requires dual subs, ideally identical. And having dual subs up front like that? That makes the Distance Hack, which is basically a slight timing shift in a particular direction, makes the sub placement pretty optimal. Conventional wisdom isn't always right, and I've definitely found that to be true in this hobby. I found so many optimizations by making the assumption that conventional wisdom might be wrong. The Speaker Level Hack is a perfect example. Conventional wisdom tells you that all speakers should produce the same SPL as measured on a meter. In reality, if you do that, and there is a disparity and distance between your speakers, the one that's further away is going to sound quieter, and the one that's closer is going to sound louder, even though they measure at the same SPL. The only way to fix it, is to do it by ear, and abandon conventional wisdom in that particular situation.

Not at all. In fact, my subwoofer gain in a large room and a small room are usually less than 1-2 dB apart. It's more about dealing with the room itself, which should be done with small or large subwoofers. Anyone who has heard the motorhome theater setup would not be able to tell you that the subs sound small. The guys from SVS were surprised by how much bass and explosiveness I was able to get, especially at lower volumes. It's all about balance and relativity.

The descriptors of objective Hi-Fi (acoustics) are well defined...the subjective experience that results in what we "hear" (psychoacoustics) is not. "Explosiveness" is a pretty common *subjective* description for HT subwoofer reviews when trying to describe the actual impact most of us are looking for - this explosiveness isn't reflected in frequency response curves, max burst spl, etc. Also, from my limited experience, I am pretty sure boundary gain and interference effects are real (and probably measurable). Finally, "running more gain" just means turning the gain up on your sub beyond your calibrated level during set-up, or maybe turning the sub line level up on the AVR. If you're looking for frequency response curves and standardized, repeatable testing metrics check out Audioholics - they do great tests. If you're looking to understand how to have the best subwoofer experience, this channel is great. NathanOakley1980 - what kind of subs are you running right now?
