Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling.
The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check.
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.

Root content is how I discovered Quackalope... so... its always welcome to see more of it. :) I have yet to play with the Corvids yet, even though I have the Underground box set as well, so it is great to see them played here.

17:53 crossbow ruins a relationship. The vagabond never creates an outrage when moving into a clearing with a woodland alliance piece as that only triggers for warriors. The Vegabond is not a warrior.

9.2.9 III for Law of Root reference. This specifically applies to Warriors, which is why Max probably confused the rule. You can crossbow or battle a non-warrior piece (such as a token) without going hostile.

@@DevonTalksTabletop it would actually, thats 2 free officers. 3 officers is equal to recruit, move and make it a token every turn, thats a lot of free points. Not sure if its enought to win though

Awesome ❤️ great to see you guys playing Root again. As usual, we gotta point out the mistakes, but they would have been double if it weren't for Max 😅: 1. At 24:28 Extortion plot should have stolen a random card from Sheera. 2. At 33:20 Devon's revolts should have given him officers. 3. At 43:48 Sheera's ambush killed 2 crows so Corvids should become hostile. 4. At 1:06:46 Crossbow kill doesn't score point because it's not a battle. 5. Vagabond moving doesn't trigger Outrage because vagabond is not a warrior, it's a pawn. 6. Jesse complains it was difficult to stop the Eyrie. That's because you had only 18 reach (recommended for 4p is 21+).

Root has all these little rules and exceptions and things to hold in your mind at the same time, it makes sense that the app is getting attention and praise since all the upkeep stuff is taken care of, enabling the player to focus on the fun

Root needs at least two factions that have robust board presence. The cats, the moles, the mice, something.

16:48 she forgots to score 1 VP when exploring the ruin. 19:42 she must move the bag to the satchel when exhausting it. 20:04 she forgots to exhaust an item in order to use the Aid action.

24:41 extortion token also gives you a card from every person with pieces in that clearing. You should have gotten a card from Shira. The Vegabond's 3 available quest cards are open knowledge and should be placed on the table near the map.

It's so much easier to play online than physically. This game is easier to get to the table than Spirit Island however. It's so hard to get Spirit Island to the table because it hurts my playgroup's heads!

Vagabond is an elusive and mysterious agent in the game, hopefully the designers may decide to make its role more subtle and invisible if they revamp Vag's role in any upcoming expansion, if any 😢

Try out the advance setup cards next time! it gives a buff a your beloved Corvids! also changes the setup of the eerye just a tiny bit in case he doesn't want a corner lol. GREAT GAMEPLAY! keep it up!

The problem with the app is there only being two militant factions and four insurgent factions currently. It means cats and birds are just ubiquitous. I want more variety among the high reach factions.

Root Digital IS awesome. But the simple fact that it isn't cought up to the current content at all is what holds it back. We now got the E&P Deck at least which is a huge step, but 6P and at least the 2 factions + 2 maps from the Underground Expansions HAVE to be included before it could even try to truly replace the board

It never will replace the board. Player interaction is the most fun part of Root. And that is missing in the digital app.

@@matje2096 yes of course, and that isn't what I meant with that, sorry. I meant more of like - for people that just want to play root and don't necessarily have the usual game group around that would like to play the game it is a fully comparable alternative. Which it right now just isn't. Not even just for the social interaction part, but just the content of Root digital is lacking my before mentioned features, which it in my opinion DESPERATELY needs to be even close to be considered a complete experience (which of course isn't the FULL experience, see Marauders, Hirelings, Adset etc.) but it's a feature complete and enjoyable experience compared to the current ones on which every time you play you HAVE to make a lot of compromises

@@NinjarioPicmin That's true. I also like the digital version alot. It basically brought me into the game. I had the base game with Riverfolk expension collecting dust for over a year. Played only twice and my group thought it was too complicated and weird. After playing the digital version I found all the genius nuances the game has to offer. I gathered together our game group again and we had a blast. Just an awesome game. Fantastic digitally, pure fun and unparalleled interaction physically.

Knew from the start this was the Eyrie’s game. It ramps up quickly, and by the time the other factions could get their engines running it was too late. Needed the Marquis or Duchy to slow them down.

Not here to rules pick (others seem to have that covered), but I see a way you could’ve stopped the Eyrie win by at least one turn! If vagabond would have been able to take out the top left roost, and corvid swapped their snare with the raid into the bottom left bunny clearing.. eyrie wouldn’t have been able to recruit in bunny clearings and would’ve gone into turmoil. He only would have score about 4 points from his existing roots, giving you guys 1-2 more turns depending how how well you cleared his other roosts out. GG!

You're playing with 18 reach instead of the recommended 21+, which means there is not enough conflict on the board and some (if not all) players are playing a solitaire game

Rather than strategy guides, which will get picked apart by the competitive Root scene, go with the character breakdowns. A lot of people will want to see concise but thorough explanations of these 10 factions.

I just primarily play Root solo. I get to play Root whenever I want and still play with the physical copy. The app never interested me. We don't need more digital world. We need more tangible things. I can't convince anyone to play with me which sucks but too much of our world is plugged into the matrix.

I dream of an epic game of root with all factions on the board at the same time....would it be silly? probably....would it be broken? most certainly...would it work? absolutly not...but it would be epic non the less.
