I replaced the 1/2 accumulator springs in the 4R70 in my 95 Mark VIII Lincoln. They had a too soft shift. I changed the trans settings in my 2002 F150 with a Superchips programmer and it shifted too hard. I thought I had changed it back to stock but didn't. Anyway, I bought new springs for the 1/2 accumulator and never used them. You can have them if you want. I'll mail them to you no charge. I just hate to throw stuff like that away. part # 1L3Z-7F284-BA and 1W7Z-7F284-AA and 1L3Z-7F284-AA The Mark VIII 4R70 had 2 springs and were known to break. The truck has 3 springs.

Well, think of it this way; You're spending all this money NOW, true, but you eventually would've had to eventually anyway. So, it's better you rebuild it now instead of it leaving you stranded. Yes, the 4R70W is a stout transmission that definitely punches above its weight class, but anything mechanical can and will eventually break down.

I got a 2002 FX4 5.4 that shifts when supposed to but shifts really rough from 2-3rd. I wonder if this is also my issue. I am at 130,000 miles.

My initial guess is that you have a different problem. My issue allowed fluid to pass around the accumulator preventing the shift to occur. Has it always done this or a new issue?

Have you checked diagnostic trouble codes? If it were my truck, I would replace all the shift accumulators and rebuild the valve body. Also, you might want to consider replacing the shift solenoids and possibly the EPC solenoid. That’s as far as you can go without pulling the transmission.

Hi, is that shift kit equivalent to a J mod or better. I have a 4.6 2v. And I had a Jmod kit done on it.

I performed the J-Mod and the shift kit together and ended up with an overly harsh 1-2 shift. I'd say pick one or the other. The shift kit comes with additional components that will resolve many of the weak points of the 4R70W and I trust the company that makes the kit.
