Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling.
The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check.
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.

One important thing that people usually miss is that with a single card on Move/Recover you can recover *multiple* relics in the same clearing (you only must stop when you recover a relic that makes you lose the card).

Yes! This is the faction I'm most stoked for in this game. I've only played the app, to date, and have the whole of everything on order and I assume they aren't gonna ship until this expansion releases... it is what it is but I'm excited for badger knights! Alternatively have you seen Household on Kickstarter since I know you like TTRPGs. It looks cool. I haven't played a TTRPG before but I'm excited. It instantly hit me with some childhood nostalgia with this book I had as a wee lad... no idea what the name was but it was this tiny little knight dude with a needle for a sword or spear (spear makes more sense but I think he was wielding it like a sword) riding a dragon fly. I loved that book, whatever the hell it was called, and this TTRPG hits in the same way for me; little people at war with the different factions in this abandoned mansion and trying to survive the big scary world with the master of the house having disappeared. There's a still of a tiny dude on a ship with a harpoon facing off against a goose... just imagine how terrifying a goose must be when you're an inch tall. I'm stoked.

Certainly the hardest faction I have played, but a really fun one. My running gag is that they are doing side quests while everyone else is doing main story lol

My kit is arriving June 9th. I'm excited! Gonna try to ready a Keepers strat. I heard they may be gimped easily o.o

Always appreciate your Root videos! This faction has seemed less interesting to me since it’s inception-down the theme and species chosen (I was def. camp Turtle!)-this definitely helps make them more appealing!

Caveat- I feel like they take a few concepts from legacy factions and add an additional layer of complication. Absolutely not a new-player friendly faction. Thinking this is a faction those of us who are veteran Root players can use when introducing new(er) players to the game!

How would you prevent getting dominated in a 4 player game that includes aggro factions like Marquise AND the Hundreds? Shelfside shared footage where the players were dropping relics wayyyy across the map from the Keeper territories. That seems infuriating. I think I'll enjoy the Keeper programming more than Eyrie programming, though :)
