Oath and Root may not be that similar in terms of gameplay, but they're definitely linked in people's minds, so I go over a few key points and see which one I prefer.

Oath finally rivals my favorite game, TI4, for creating epic stories that I can't get anywhere else. Oath is super swingy and can end abruptly. Root always felt like it had a problem with being behind and never being able to catch up which is always a feel bad so a lot of people I taught never wanted to play more than a couple games. Bottom line is Oath is just more fun to people I've played with so it actually makes it to the table more often.

I keep waiting for Root to release a big box, all-in, complete collection campaign.

The creators said no to that idea

The designer has said this probably wont happen because of ridiculous shipping costs and the idea that a big box is "a coffin for your game" because you'll never play it.

I've played Root a bunch and absolutely love it. My 2 plays of Oath have left me feeling kind of meh about it but it has also been hard for me to wrap my head around it. I think if I can get a group of like 4 people to play a few games with me on a regular basis, I will probably start to like it a lot more.

Its Oath for me. The variety and the way each game builds on the last is irresistible. The feeling of following an empire from its inception to it collapse a few games later followed by the rise of a new empire from its ashes is like no other.

Great segment! Interesting to hear your thoughts between the two as I'm sure others have pondered as well. P.S. If I may add a suggestion: in addition to on screen, it would be helpful if you announced each heading part (visuals, ease of play, strategy); as some of us might just be listening to only audio like a podcast. Thanks!

i've had oath for a year and really want to get into it, but it just hasn't been possible for various reasons. i'm considering trying to get a game going online if i can find a few people interested in a weekly or biweekly campaign.

Oath is almost an emergent storytelling game. Root is a deeply strategic game with tons of player interaction and table talk (I can't even begin to consider giving that point to Oath). They are almost opposite in a way, which I believe was the design intent behind Oath. So very hard to compare both.

Emergent story telling…good god I must have read this a thousand times now. As much as this is praised I still feel Oath is very mechanical and almost abstract. There’s not even lore text on cards…nothing. Icons, dice counting and resource swapping. I love games with thematic elements and the stories we can tell each other…but Oath didn’t give me that. I died trying to explain the banners to my group. It’s ridiculous how tedious it can be and how many small rules and confusions the game created for us

@@elqord.1118 I know this is an old comment, but emergent story-telling typically has little to do with pre-constructed lore, story or text.

In the spectrum of fun to play to challenging, root seats in a sweet spot for me. It's among few boardgames that I miss playing so much that invite my friends only to play Root. I haven't played Oath; but it seems that it suits more hardcore boardgamers than me. It looks a bit overwhelming based on my grasp on reviews. But I have to play it through to see what's my final thoughts about it.

we're not really hardcore boardgamers and we love Root at our house, I can say that Oath *looks* overwhelming and it is a lot to take in at first, but once you play it is pretty smooth and I would argue simpler than Root in some ways. If you love Root give it a go, its definitely worth :)

Nice comparison. I really like both games, but Root is easier to get to the table, so have to go with Root. I would love to get 4 committed people to consistently play Oath though.

Oath for me quite easily, every time I play Root I ask myself why are we not playing a superior COIN game? Oath playstyle is vastly different and something I quite enjoy.

I think root is far better and holds on for years + it’s fun even for solo play . Oath needs more players to get to the fun level ( at least 4) + it takes way more time than root

I find it strange that people think its a bad thing that a game need more players and time.
@svachalek
@svachalek 2 жыл бұрын
More players and time makes a better experience usually but as you hit midlife it’s usually harder to find big blocks of time, and even harder to find big blocks of time that are also open for your friends. So, even if I manage to find a whole weekend I can use to play TI4, I’d never be able to put together a group for it. So, faster smaller games are appealing just because they get to happen more, or at all.

I think Oath is ultimately pointless. A single game of Oath can fall flat and only serve to prepare for the next game…but even that is actually not true. As an exile you lose absolutely everything between games. So game after game you try to become chancellor starting from zero. You can’t built anything meaningful between games, you can’t even keep your own cards. The legacy element might as well not be there. Some games your odds of winning will drop around the midway mark and all you can do is help king making. But why would you? What does it all matter? What’s the difference between being chancellor once or twice? One game you are an exile then you become chancellor and lose the title the game after and so on and so on. Root delivers a more complete experience per game. Oath delivers a great experience occasionally but that’s not enough for me. In Oath I never care about winning and sometimes when you have an especially pointless turn with nigh zero options you can’t help but wonder why play it all

As was said above, Oath is an emergent storytelling game while Root is a strategic one. Both are great games and I personally find Root makes it to my table more often. I suspect it's mostly because my group leans towards being more competitive but when we want to play something 'lighter' we play out a chronicle of Oath. Why play Oath when in some games your odds of winning drop in the midway mark? You do because the designer asks you to appreciate how you got into that position and what you will do next because of it. Imagine an opponent sees you piling up secrets. They maybe get scared of your growing power and reveal the advisor Book Burning. You've never seen this card before and now that you've read it you realize you will likely not be able to win the game if they campaign against you. This situation is perfect storytelling material. What will you do when such a swingy threat comes into play? Try to make peace and share power? Or threaten that if this player wrecks your chances now, you will be a thorn in their side in the next game? That sounds like a good time to me if you are in the right mood, win or lose!
