Thanks for your videos, you got me motivated to start grafting again after a few years off. I did a dozen or so apples and pears this year with about 90 percent success, and started 30 new fig varieties with great luck also. Your videos are very motivational and informative.

I cut a horizontal branch off my Olympian, removed a few leaves from the cut end and stuck it in a pot of dirt. Kept it watered and about a month later, I had another fig. A lot easier! And 100% rooted!

I broke all the rules in this video and I tried (and failed miserably) to grow a few clippings from a fig tree from my aunt. My clippings were overwatered and they all rotted and grew moldy. I think based on your method I can do it successfully. Thanks for sharing. Just subscribed.

Your videos are the best resource on fruit propagation, hands down! I rooted about 150 grape cuttings this winter using these same grow bags - I found that a heat mat (with a spacer) greatly accelerated the rooting process. Quick question: When should you move the cuttings into full sun? My grapes leafed out about a month ago but they haven't done much shoot growth since. I did give them a light fertilizer and they are still in part shade. Since grapes like full sun, I am wondering when/if I should move the bags into that environment. Thank you!

First confirm that the cuttings have well developed roots by sampling some of the bags. If they don't they won't be able to support the rate of water loss by the leaves and I would still keep them in partial shade until they do. Thanks for the comment.

In my first batches, several years ago, only a few plants survived. There was always something wrong (too much water, to much humidity, not enough light, not enough nutrients, etc). Practice makes perfect. Keep trying and good luck.

Как-то столкнулся незная что в кокосовой стружке может быть соль. Перевёл саженцы. Узнал уже позже что нужно хорошо промывать. Я предпочитаю свой чернозём👍

If you rinse the coco coir from the salt the roots will grow fine and being an inert medium has several advantages over the use of black earth.

Hola, muy buen vídeo y fácil de entender. Estoy tratando de que varios esquejes de higos produzcan raíces usando este método. Yo use zip bag y las puse adentro de un contenedor plástico con tapa y se ven que van muy bien. Una preguntita, ¿cuanta humedad debe tener? El contenedor se ve sudada y con humedad. Además, Las tengo adentro de la casa dándole la luz indirecta del sol a una temperatura de más o menos de 74F… ¿debo ponerla afuera que esta mas caliente? Muchas gracias.

This is so inspirational! I just bought some cuttings to try this but is there a way to start the cuttings in the winter time inside, under lights? Space is very limited in spring when everything needs to be started for the season but I have time and space in the winter. Would this be a mistake?

thanks for the video, very helpful. unfortunately at my place the conditions of cocopeat are different. I also use it for cuttings or grafting, and I've also uploaded this on my channel, but for some conditions and types of plants, using soil that has been mixed with other ingredients gives better results than using cocopeat. 👍

I always say that growing fruits has a very important local component. What works for you doesn't necessarily works for someone else, who is in an area with different ambient conditions. It's true that coco peat isn't a medium that works well for all plant types. A soil, sand and peat mix, for instance, will be better in some situations. Principalmente em websites estrangeiros embora agora seja mais difícil. Em Portugal, só vendem árvores já enxertadas. Mesmo assim, alguns viveiros portugueses têm alguma variedade à venda (viveiros castromil, viveiros albar, viveiros valter)

Thanks so much for sharing your precious knowledge! I'd like to confirm if I get your instruction perfectly. You collected the branches in winter and store them in the fridge. Then in early spring you cut the bottom close to the last node, lightly scrape the bark, apply rooting hormone and plant it. Hope I get everything right. Thank you JSakadura!

Hi, I just found your channel and subbed :) I have a fig tree with a lot of offshoots from the ground. I pulled one out and it has some roots. If I plant it, will it produce the same fruit as the mother tree? Also any videos on English walnut pruning? can I cut the leader branch without killing the tree? My plants are in containers and I don't want them to become too big. Thanks.

Tenho uma ameixoeira que de a uns 4 anos para ca, começou a ter formigas. Quando podava um ramo, estava tudo esburacado e la vinham elas de dentro da árvore atacar. Como me disseram que nao faziam mal deixei andar. Mas este ano mais de metade da árvore morreu. Sabes o que poderá ser e se ainda vou a tempo de a salvar? Já é uma árvore com uns 50 anos, mas tenho duvidas que sobreviva este ano. Obrigado

I really like your videos thanks. I have successfully rooted raspberries, blackberries and boysenberries which seem really easy. Cut, poke in the ground, watch them grow. to my surprise I have had the same experience with red and blackcurrant which seem very willing to root from cuttings. Blueberries on the other hand have been a challenge but to be fair before I watched your videos I just poked any branch that happened to break or from what I had pruned into the ground and thought 'well if it grows great, if not so what'. But I will try some of these techniques with blueberries although most commercial cuttings are done with soft wood and kept in a mister. Not sure how hard wood cuttings will do?

thank you so much for all your videos but particularly this one. a question please - about the timing for when to do things, given our climate/weather. When is the best time to root figs from cuttings? we are in the tropics - Philippines. we have 2 seasons - rainy and summer. we are now in the summer, really hot, so hot all schools, just about, have gone online. this hot period started March. Rains will come towards the middle to the end of May. climate change of course plays a role - sometimes rains don't come in earnest until mid-July and will continue to the end of October. occasional rains over November and December which brings cool weather up to mid-February...so i repeat my question - with this kind of climate/weathher, when is the best time to root figs from cuttings? do grafting? marcotting?...mygreathanks and blessings

Thank you for your expertise. Where are you located, and what is the climate in your region? I try to do the same in Belgium, in a moderate sea climate, but most fig trees struggle to get their fruit fully ripened. Do you think I can substitute the tape with a wound healing wax like compo lac balm? Parafilm and Ugro coco coir is very hard to find in the euro countries. Online shop tips are very welcome.

It really depends on how hot is this period where you live. In my area it's best to do the air layers a bit earlier. Otherwise, I have to check them often, so they don't dehydrate.

I grow a large fig tree in a container, and every year i prune, root, and give away cuttings. I usually use water and dirt, but i use rooting hormone to clone cannabis, so i moght jist have to try that this year. Thanks.

Hi JSACADURA. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Obviously these are Fig tree cuttings which they are easy to root from cuttings. My question is can you apply same method to Plum, Apricot, Apple and Pear cuttings?

In the video you can see other fruit types being rooted with the same method (kiwis, grapevines and pomegrantes). So, it will work with other types of cuttings (it just takes longer). But, in most cases, you wouldn't want to root plums, apricots, apples or pears as they will grow much better when grafted to a robust rootstock.

Yes, it will. But not all fruit types will grow well on their own roots. That's why we graft those types toa robust rootstock.

Personalmente mi método es igual, solo que yo voy recolectando los esquejes a medida que los encuentro, da igual el momento del año, ya que se meten al frigorífico, enrolladlos en papel o tela, húmeda y esta dentro de una bolsa de plástico. Llegado el momento sobre noviembre saco los esquejes del frio para plantar, dejándolos al frio del jardín un par de meses, en enero los meto a casa para darles calor, sobre 21ºC y luz día y noche, en 15 días los tengo todos brotando, en cajas de plastico.

Can this be done with cuttings that were taken in the summer? I have purchased plum, apple, and peach cuttings but I have no rootstock prepared. My original plan was to root the cuttings simply to preserve the genetics, then worry about the rootstock later. After I watched the video, I was thinking I could place my cuttings in the fridge and wait until I have prepared rootstock, and graft them late summer or next spring... What do you think my best option is, considering that I purchased the cuttings in the summer? Thank you

Where do you buy parafilm? Is there any special grafting kind? I bought some which seems like cheap plastic and doesnt strech as it should. I have seen some Parafilm M which is used to sealing labolatory equipment but it's pretty expensive.

You can find Grafting Parafilm in Amazon. Its more adequate for grafting jobs than Parafilm M. 2 1/2 inch rolls will cost around 12 USD or 8 USD for 1 inch roll . Search for "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape" but beware of plastic knockoffs.

Have been successful in the rooting at coco coir step, but the root always rot when repoted or let in the coco coir,, any advice maybe?

Coco coir acts as a sponge and absorbs too much water that can rot the roots if you water normally. Keep the plants in coco coir watering very lightly until the roots are older and the plants can resist potting up without dying. Since coco coir is inert you have to add a few drops of liquid fertilizer to the water, to feed the plants until they age enough (you can also use a foliar fertilizer). Check the size/age of the plants in this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l92ejaR1s7CcnX0.html - and the tips mentioned at min 09.30 - At this stage the plants won't die when potting up.

Do you mean before rooting? You can disinfect cuttings with a very diluted bleach solution. In my experience, most of the times, that's not necessary. Keeping cuttings in direct sun (before or in the first weeks of rooting) is not a good idea as they will, most likely, dehydrate.

I tried rooting fig cuttings early last summer zone 6B,they just rooted a month ago, I put them in the garage for the winter, is this recommended ? They are in pots.
