I watched a video on how to make a rocket stove. KZfaq then auto played one of your videos. It was so in depth I lost track of time. Ended up watching about 6 videos. Forgot all about rocket stoves I want to start a garden now.

Great video I use COFFEE filters to dry my seeds in as paper towels have a tendency to hold on to the seeds and make it hard to get them off, another thing I use is PARCHMENT PAPER, just a thought to share. Love your videos Jess!☺

I just love your joyful and helpful energy and optimism. It brightens my day and I learn something along the way. My biggest dream besides becoming a mother (which has happened!) is having a huge and prosperous garden. The past two years we finally built a small garden that was not very productive. We are planning to move within the next year and one of my biggest priorities is not the house, but the land so that we can have the garden of my dreams. My grandmother would be so proud of me, God rest her soul!

Oops...I didn't know about the whole fermenting thing. When I didn't have any seeds this spring and everything shut down, I took some store bought cherry tomatoes and scraped the seeds into a fine mesh colander. I rinsed the goop off by rubbing the seeds against the strainer with my hands, then I put them on some paper towel and let them dry for a couple days. Then I planted them, shredded paper towel and all, and hoped for the best. To my surprise, they sprouted so it looks like I'm growing cherry tomatoes this year. Saved the seeds from a store bought bell pepper and now have little sprouted pepper plants. I think I'm hooked on saving seeds. ♥

When my wife saves tomato seeds she just puts the seeds on a paper towel and lets them dry.when planting we just put pieces of the paper towel that have a seed or two attached and plant them,paper towel and all...it works for us.

Hey Jess! Great video. 1. Plants have to be of the same Genus and the same species in order to cross pollinate. 2. Tomatoes with exerted stigmas are the ones that you need to put isolation bags on the flowers. Most heirloom tomatoes have inserted stigmas and you don't need to worry about these. Cucumbers can cross with other cucumbers but not with the Armenian cucumber because these are melons. 3. You can grow one each of the 4 species of squash in the same area and not worry about cross pollination. C.pepo ( most of the summer squash varieties and some pumpkin varieties) C. maxima mostly winter squash varieties. C. moschata (butternuts, Tahitian melon squash, Canada crookneck, Seminole Squash- which would be a great variety for you to grow as they flourish in hot, humid climates. C.mixta/C.argyrosperma which are mostly for stock feed and Fall decorations. These can cross but not in the garden with bee's. 4. Peppers are insect pollinated as well as self pollinated. Most of the plants that are wind pollinated are cereal grains, grasses and corn. Also the "gel pockets " in a tomato are called locules- Low Q els. I find in interesting that you mispronounce a lot of common names but you can pronounce "potager" with ease. I do really enjoy watching your videos. I have been gardening organically since the late 1970's. I have mostly used French intensive (double digging) to achieve raised beds. I am currently using no dig beds but still adding all the amendments that are associated with biodynamic practices. You might want to try this as it will cut down on a lot of the insect problems that you face. Anyway keep posting your great videos!

I just press the tomato seeds against a paper towel to rupture the gel bubble around the seed and rub it off. Then if I'm lazy I just let them dry on that paper towel or I'll put them on a clean one to dry and then peel them off and put them in an envelope to store them. Sometimes I even leave the gel and just let them dry. They almost all sprout for me. The other thing I do when I have older seeds or seeds that are difficult to sprout is spread them between damp paper towel in a zip lock baggie and check them daily for sprouts. Many sprout in a day but some take a month. As they sprout I plant them in seed trays. It works great. Sometimes too great. I planted some ancient honeybee sunrise cherry tomatoes seeds hoping to get one or two plants. I have 74 plants. I hope lots of my friends want cherry tomato plants. I couldn't throw them away when they wanted to live so badly so I planted all of them.

I always put it this way: a fruit is the resulting growth - seed containing vessel - from a fertellized flower. A vegetable is an edible part of a plant that is not the former. :)

You can use any permanent marker to write on glass. Can be washed. Remove writing by scrubbing hard.

i usually always write the year on seeds that are dried and packaged in ziplocks ... in case I don't plant the same variety the next year and I don't mix different years seeds of the same variety in the same ziplock ... that way in case one year doesn't do well, I can just toss them all out if I have another year of the same variety. Finally, I often store seeds in a freezer that I have an excess of, because they will keep longer. Hope this helps others.

This is truly frightening. Two weeks ago I watched my gardener sister saving seeds and had ZERO interest in what she was doing--actually thought it was pretty silly. I hope you included all of this information in your book. I keep my seeds in a box in the refrigerator. I just germinated some seeds from 10 years ago, that I bought from Seeds Of Change (pre-Mars buyout) at >90% germination rate. One was a hybrid broccoli variety (Fiesta F1) and a Chinese Cabbage. I started a lot more than I planned to plant, because I thought they weren't going to germinate. I have way too many plants now. Already looking for new homes for them.

I don’t ferment my tomato seeds. I’ve been saving seeds for almost a decade with a more than 90% germination rate. I put the seeds in a fine mesh strainer, rinse them and rub gently against the strainer, then turn out onto clean paper and allow to dry. I move them around with a spoon or spatula occasionally as they dry. If they stick, I just peel the, off the paper. I do t use paper towel, but printer paper, usually the blank back side of something, and that sticks less.

I can not thank you enough for this episode. It had helped me in so many ways. I have searched for a seed company that I can trust for heirloom seeds. I am a new gardener from NC I only have 1 raised bed in my back yard. But I am going to be expanding it by next year. Love your channel keep up the great work and God bless.

Ive been saving seeds for years and mostly to keep plants going in my garden but also just to have on hand in case I can't buy them next year. Seeds are stored in my pantry safe for the future. Thanks for sharing the tips on fermenting away the gel. I'm going to give that a go.
