I started mine when I was 16 and haven't stopped. I'm 24 now and it just keeps getting bigger lol. I didn't watch youtube or read much before I started mine though so you're probably gonna be ahead of my 16 year old self :P Good luck! the best advice, I think, when you're first starting out is to just grow what you like to eat already. :)

I have a precious recipe for tomato chutney from my late grandma. She taught me to make this amazing chutney as a way to use up the late season unripe green tomatoes. It is soooo delicious!! She also taught me to make salsa verde with the green tomatoes as another option. Point being.... there are some fantastic recipes out there to use up your green tomatoes and then THAT can be canned and put up for the winter. Other point being ...Grandmas are the BEST !!!💚

Yes, please, on sharing your grandmother's recipe! Those old "family" recipes usually had more flavor than what we see today. Today, the recipes tend to be overly-simplified. As a result, the flavor is greatly dimished... at least that is what I have been finding. So...if you are willing to share, we would appreciate becoming the recipients. Thanks! Whenever southerners talk about fall gardens it is so weird to me since I've always lived in the north where no such thing exists. With a very short growing season, we only get one chance to get it right and hope there isn't a crop failure.

I was born and raised in the north, on L.I. N.Y. We could have a fall garden. The vine squashes, pumpkins, onions, and herbs still growing, along with spinach, lettuces, peas, carrots, cabbages and broccoli, and potatoes to dig. And perennial flowers and bulbs to plant for the spring. I guess you were Very north! :) In S.C I can't be outside from mid-May on, without being eaten by mosquitoes and sweating to death in the heat and humidity. I ride my bike for exercise since they can't catch me that way! I'll take the shorter growing season.
@diyfferent

@@patriot20000 Yea, we're further north than Long Island. In NY we lived in Saratoga County and now we're in Michigan, even more north than Saratoga. The only season I like is summer, so I'm the complete opposite, haha :) I could totally ditch spring, fall, and especially winter and be completely happy. I can't stand being cold at all. We live in the wrong climate, that's for sure. :D

Absolutely love your garden tours! I saw Rosellas in your garden. They are a staple in a lot of Queensland, Australia gardens. I think I've heard you talk about hibiscus tea with them but they also make an amazing jam. The seed pods inside the calyx are a natural source of pectin so you don't need to add anything else pectin wise. I love that about them. I grow them for my Granddad... it is his favourite jam! 😊

Hey, Jess... one more thing! I've never grown (or eaten) ground cherries. In deference to you and Miah, I bought one pineapple ground cherry plant from my local nursery and tucked it into the garden where one of the squash plants had been. Guess I'll find out in another couple of months what flavor this variety has. Thanks for the recommendation! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA -- 7/20/2019.

I have a Sugar Rush Peach, it's so goood!!! ❤❤❤❤ My 8yo loves them, we share the fruits so she takes the lower half with less heat (no heat at all before the membranes that hold the seeds start, and that's not evil until the part where the seeds are) and I take the top half with more bite. It's a good mid range hot, super sweet variety! You're in for a treat! Oh, but let them turn a pale peach color, Jess' looked a bit unripe. They go from light green to yellowy white and about one day after you've abandoned all hope they turn a pale pinky orange and they're at peak sweetness!

Hi Jess, I’m on my third summer of gardening and growing intentionally. I like to say that my first summer I was a planter, I’d just plant things and leave them and now I’m learning to be a gardener. Your videos have really helped me learned more about how to better grow our food. I’m in Lincoln Nebraska, my tomato fruit looks great but has not really started to blush yet...waiting, waiting, waiting to make a tomato sandwich! I would love to see more cooking videos and what your doing in the kitchen. I loved hearing how you used summer squash! All in all I just want to say I’ve really enjoyed your videos and wanted to thank you for putting in the extra effort to share parts of your life with us. I very much appreciate it. Also, I tried the egg in the hole while planting only one of my tomatoes this year and it’s the biggest and healthiest plant so I’ll forever do that with all my tomatoes from here on out! Thanks again, Erin in Lincoln

I planted the Aunt Molly ground cherries this year for the first time and really don't care for them at all. I try to grow a few different things each year. Some become our favorites and others are a miss. Ground hog took out all my broccoli, cauliflower and peas. I will be replanting peas in August. Going to start seeds again inside for broccoli. Trying really hard in the little area that I have. Hard living in the city when you can't have electric fences and teens have no respect and take your tomatoes and throw them like stones. Praying it is soon God's plan to get us out of here. Asking for prayers that this will happen for us. God's blessing to you and yours.

Totally cant get enough of your channel Jess!! I watch all your videos, you have inspired me to start a small homestead here in Ontario! I am in a northern climate and want you to know that all your encouraging to start a fall garden has not been for nothing! It's very hot here and has been the case for our summers the last 3 years! Reaching 40+celcius with the humidity! I am excited to be on this journey and knowing your videos are here to help! Thank you and God Bless you and yours xo😊🌺🌄

I LOVE making fermented hot pepper sauce. The heat decreases exponentially most of the time. It is better than any hot sauce you can buy.

Hi Jess. Beautiful snake gourds. 😍 I need those seeds! The biggest one you showed is the right size to pick for a stir fried Indian curry. Cut into 1cm semicircles with seeds and saute with a couple of Thai hot peppers and an onion. Season, add a cup of water and boil till tender. Enjoy!

I live in zone 8B (High Desert CA) and my peppers have finally taken off. This is my second year gardening here. Last year all my plant basically died because of the heat. Thank you so much for sharing all your gardening wisdom. It has helped me a ton this year.
