FOR BEST RESULTS, WATCH ON A BIG SCREEN IN 1080p, 60 FRAMES PER SECOND.
After four months, we're finally back for an even longer episode of Remake or Rebreak. No, folks, I really don't know how I do it. This time we're looking at the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time on N64, GCN, and 3DS. How does the original game hold up today? How well does the GameCube rerelease improve upon the N64 original? What exactly does the Master Quest expansion add to the original game? Finally, how well does the 3DS remake update the game for 2011? All these questions, and more, answered in this near feature length ROR extravaganza! Can you tell I was tired when I wrote this description?

Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Re-Meh: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Additionally, a Re-Meh may not address the original's salient issues or fail to add anything meaningful.
3- Remake: As good or even slightly better than the original, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own that version. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original.
4- Replace: A remake/port that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it renders the original virtually obsolete. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of new content.

@Spike16 Absolutely not. Ocarina of Time was never envisioned as realistic, nor does realism look good on N64. Any of the concept art for the game or its characters shows something bright and colorful, which the remake captures far better. Not to mention that makes the contrast between the dystopian future and the lively past all the more intense.

@@SerpongeDash I think the flaws of this game can give to a charm that gets loose when something is getting a remake. But not all the times. Like the resident evil remake made it better than the original. The 3ds remake fixes a lot of things in the original like the iron boots are easy to put on in the water temple. That's a great addition. But some things they didn't improved like ganondorf's model doesn't look as memorable than the original. Then we have the lighting that ruins the atmosphere from the original. For example the final battle with ganon was ruined by the lighting and made him less intimidating and less epic than the n64.

@@pastamaniac6794 I don't know, personally I much prefer the OOT remake but that's because I played this one first. I understand what you mean tho, I have the same feeling with the spyro trilogy remake, I much prefer the look of the originals even if the remakes are obviously more detailed, but the atmosphere is lost a bit with that for me. So I get what you mean with OOT

Kind of disappointing. Delta episode was nice, but the difficulty was lowered, no more Battle Frontier, game corner was removed, you can no longer see yourself riding ships, it just fades from one location to another. Although the mega latias/latios and post game legendary hunting was nice. It's more so that HGSS did so much more than GSC, and even FRLG added in quite a few new areas and content.

Omega Ruby isn't a bad remake is my second favorite remake. Hgss is my favorite remake. But Oras has way better postgame than Leaf Green. Emerald=Omega Ruby>Ruby. Look at the characters in Oras they are stronger than Emerald. I loved Zinnia and Wally and Delta Episode. The Mauville's city new design is better. But if they included the Battle Frontier then it would be better than Emerald but it isn't. Furthermore, they didn't include any new features from Emerald and that was a bit disappointing. Yes they aren't Emerald remakes, but couldn't they add at least two features from Emerald? Oras add as much content as Emerald add. So both games are equally good. Oras deserve much more love. They aren't shit, I really enjoyed these games

In all seriousness, man, OoT is one of my personal most cherished games, but these criticisms are probably the most valid criticism's I've seen against the game. Good on you for coming off very unbiased, easy to understand, and collected. This might be my favorite review of OoT tbh
@arnox4554
@arnox4554 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know, when he started ranting about the graphics, I thought that was pretty stupid. Some of the games he brings up CLEARLY have made graphical sacrifices in other ways that he seems to just flat out ignore. And the ones that can actually stand toe to toe with OoT graphically such as Banjo-Kazooie were, comparatively speaking, smaller sized games. I don't think he realizes this, but OoT is HUGE by late 90s standards. It has a crapload of mechanics, dialogue, and areas. If you don't believe me, then talk to the OoT Randomizer dev team. They'll tell you. And in any case, if he really thinks that's bad, then he needs to play FF7 sometime. Now THAT game is an insanely graphical eyesore. OoT looks like Crysis by comparison.

The 3DS version has always felt to me as the definitive version of Ocarina of Time. Heck one thing you didn’t seem to mention was that the character models in the 3DS version look exactly like the artwork for the characters from the instruction booklet of the N64 version. So they were remodeled yes but remodeled to look like how they were originally SUPPOSED to look like but sadly the N64 version couldn’t cut it. Ocarina of Time 3D is the TRUE version of the game. I feel like the original on N64 was more or less a prototype. While the 3DS version is the true/definitive version.

The reason (at least what I think) Navi leaves is because Link is not a Kokiri, even though the Great Deku Tree knows this, he summons Navi. Navi's real mission is to guide Link through his adventure, it's only when peace is restored Navi decides to leave because he has served his purpose, that's why I think Navi leaves at the end of the game.

Here's the 1 thing you can go back to the N64 or even GCN version for. The ability to easily record it; either from devices or screen-capturing an emulator. I play the GCN version primarily before the 3DS version due to higher quality for recording and performance purposes, plus I prefer the GCN Controller over the N64 Controller; but I'd always choose the 3DS above all else. If 3DS capture devices were easier/cheaper to get; 3DS would be the one I'd record.

Au contraire, I _loved_ the Shiekah Stone in the 3DS remake. I'm someone who tends to miss obvious clues when it comes to puzzle-solving, but I don't get frustrated, I just get bored and play something else. That's one reason the Zelda series was never one of my favorites. But as an early 3DS adopter with absolutely NOTHING else to play, the game could nudge me in the right direction whenever I got stuck. It's the only reason I finally beat Double-Oh Tee (and I'm totally stealing that). Excellent work as always, EPG!

I agree, although i never used them. And to be honest, they kind of annoyed me when i first saw them, but in reality, giving more options to the player is almost everytime a good thing, as long as the game states clearly what is the desired way to play from the developers point of view. And these games were always made, even back then, with nintendo power and word of mouth in mind. Shigeru Miyamoto design the original Zelda with the intention that people solved the mysteries as a community, so adding hints into a game is really just cutting the middle man

It is sealed away in the sacred realm, which is sealed by the master sword, which is sealed by the door of time, which is sealed by the three sacred stones and the Song of Time, which are sealed in 4 separate places all over Hyrule! Link: Okay so what’s the plan? Zelda: We’re gonna unseal everything! Because the triforce is surely better in the hands of 2 defenseless children than all those seals. (3 stones and an ocarina later) Link: Okay. Unseal the door. Unseal the sword. Unseal the Sacred Realm. And Unseal the Triforce. Ganon: Gwahahaha. Thanks for doing all of the work for me. Now enjoy puberty. Link: What? (The sounds of aging 7 years instantly) Sheik: There you are hero. You failed! And now we’re in a post apocalyptic future, because why not? Link: Hey this was all Zelda’s idea. I can go back and just prevent this from happening you know. Sheik: No! You need to make things right and atone for your actions. Now go, while I observe you from nearby. (Five sages later) Sheik: Great. Anyways you have the triforce of courage while Ganon has Power. The Triforce of Wisdom belongs to the smartest person in the world. (Reveals herself) Zelda: AND IT’S ME! Link: What?! How do you have that? Your plan is the whole reason why the world was doomed. Zelda: Because that was all your fault. Anyways I hid myself as a sheikah to fool Ganon so he wouldn’t find me. Because I’m soooo smart! (Ganon captures her) Zelda: Kyaaaa Ganon: Thanks for ever so foolishly revealing yourself. Now come to my castle, boy. I say this, but you’re gonna need to build your own bridge to get in. (One escape sequence later) Zelda: Yay Link! You did it. (Ganon comes back) Zelda: Ahhh (Link goes and fights him) Link: Zelda don’t you have insane magic and sheikah powers you could use to help me? Zelda: No I’m the damsel in distress, ahhh. (Link fatally wounds Ganon) Link: Alright Ganon. Time to kill yo- Zelda: Don’t worry Link! I’ll save you. Sages! Seal him away! (Ganon is sealed) Link: Why’d you do that? I was going to kill him! Now he’s just going to come back eventually when the seal is broken. Zelda: Of course Link. It’s meant to be. There was absolutely no other option. Link: You know, if I would’ve just ratted Ganon out instead of following your plan, none of this ever would’ve happened. Zelda: Gasp, you’re right. I’m so smart for thinking of that. Now it’s time for reverse puberty! Link: What?! (The sounds of an adult voice morphing into prepubescent child voice.) (Goes back to the past) Zelda: Link! I have a- (Puts finger to her lip) Link: Shhhhh. Hey King! Ganon killed the Deku Tree. King: Gasp, how horrible! Guards, execute him. Ganon: Wait, What?! Link: Heh, that was easy.

As someone who loves N64 games, I honestly think the N64 aged the worst out of any console. Mostly because of graphics, but some of it has to do with the controller layout. Compared to PS1, I feel like those not only aged better but transition into HD formats more gracefully with simple filtering be it emulated or with tricky hardware setups. Also helps that the original PS1 controller design has more or less evolved into the current modern designs everyone uses. Regardless if you swap the D-Pad with the Left Analog stick, every modern controller is pretty much the same guts. I mean this includes even playing N64 games on Wii-U, sometimes it feels horrible because they didn't take any special care to patch those games to better adjust to the Wii-U controller options.

31:33 I haven't played OoT in a long time, but I think Zelda actually sends you to Death Mountain, since she gives you a letter to be able to access said place. There you find a rock blocking the dungeon entrance so you end up heading to Goron City, where you can use the shortcut to go straight to Lost Woods. My only problem with OoT 3D is that I have to play it on 3DS. When I'm at home I want to sit comfortable and hold a big controller in my hands. Just because of that I have kept playing the N64 version through the Wii Virtual Console over the 3DS one.

The main thing that for me makes 3D the definitive edition is the improved controls. Having a dedicated Ocarina button and 4 item slots makes playing the game so much more fun. Combined with the simpler and faster menu and the fact that certain equipment (boots) are now items instead makes stuff like the Water Temple less annoying to play through. Then there's the circle pad which is leagues better to use than an analogue stick (this includes all modern analogue sticks btw, fite me). Also the fact that you don't have to memorise songs is such a huge bonus for me. Although, I think that N64 OOT and Majora look *amazing* and prefer their looks over that 3D versions and I will go to the grave with that. And this isn't nostalgia or anything (I wasn't even alive when the N64 was around), it's just my genuine opinion. The other thing I prefer about the N64 version is the feeling of the controller in my hands, the 3ds is nice and all, but the angled grip of the N64 is one of the comfiest things for me. I just really love both of the versions, absolutely the best 3D Zelda for me (Oot > BotW > Majora > Twilight Princess > Wind Waker (Would be above Majora but I never finished it because of that *awful* triforce piece hunt, tried again on the WiiU version and still couldn't do it. it's just so boring and annoying to do and completely takes me out of the game) > Skyward Sword)

I was "there" for the hype and release of ocarina. During that era, people were infatuated with 3D games, with many believing that a game being 3D automatically made it better than anything from previous generations. I never found ocarina to be superior to link to the past, though many of my friends did. There was a lot of change during that time, not just in technology, but in marketing. I think a lot of us from that era got caught up in some of that. Ocarina was certainly a new experience and deserved the attention it got at the time, but most people are taking memories from when they were very young and comparing them to experiences they had after maturing as gamers and people.

Ocarina of Time was my first Zelda (other than watching a friend play bits of A Link to the Past at his house), and i was around 30 at the time. While i remember thinking that Zelda games looked a little too cutesy-poo for me, i picked up OoT anyway, and ended up really getting into it. It wasn't my first 3D game as i had played Mario 64 and the Dooms and Wolfensteins on PC before it, but the seemingly vast expance of landscape to explore really blew my mind at the time. How you could see that mountain off in the distance and you knew you were gonna go there eventually. It didn't make me a die hard Zelda fan or anything-- i've only played Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild since (and an hour or two Twilight Princess-- couldn't get into it)-- but it left a huge impression on me as it was the very first game that felt 'open world' to me. It didn't hurt that it had some of the very best game play on offer at the time. And i did eventually get used to the more cutesy-poo aspects of the series.

The whole point to "arbitrarily" play Zelda's lullaby was to showcase that those places in particular were somehow connected to the royal family. The puzzle does solve itself, but you mentioned opening doors or getting a chest, YOU need to prove you have a connection to the royal family. While I do agree with the sentiment of providing clues instead of using the triforce on the ground, most places use the triforce because those areas are apart of the story and it simplifies progression.

It's really refreshing to hear someone who agrees with me that OoT isn't the best, most amazing game ever but finally, FINALLY did it in a way that...*doesn't* try to maliciously insult the people who consider it their favorite game? Why is this such a novel concept to so many people. You can praise a game or talk about its flaws without maliciously tearing into the people that enjoy it. Amazing! (This, unfortunately, applies to a lot of other things outside of video games, and it's a mentality that I will never understand, despite how I form my opinions on things...) I wish I could give better feedback on this video, but I barely ever get to play OoT, original or remake. Even now, where my household technically owns the remake, it's a digital download on my mom's semi-broken 3DS, so I can't really play it very much or for very long. I feel like I've beaten it once or twice, but I can't figure out if that's actually true or if I've just watched so many other people play it that my brain just thinks I have.

You're fine for preferring the 3DS version of OoT, the only reason I still play the original version is because I have a 00 Golden Cartridge version of the game that has everything uncensored. The blood that comes out of enemies is red instead of green, the fire temple's music is unaltered, and they still had some of the hindu imagery within some of the areas as well as on the mirror shield. The 3DS version of the game is considerably better than the N64 version, the only reason you'd prefer the original is nostalgia. That said, I have a real nostalgic love for the appearance of pre-rendered imagery like the N64 has.

I thought this review was really fair. Some of the things like the graphics and text speed never bothered me personally but that’s just different strokes and I found the review very fun o listen to. Ocarina isn’t perfect and has its flaws. I think for me many of the Zelda games have big flaws like TPs boring world, WWs big empty dungeons, or BOtWs uninspiring story. All great games, but I think we haven’t hit that perfect Zelda yet even if we have gotten close. Ocarina always stands out to me as one which even with its own flaws tends to perform better in most of the areas of gaming especially with the 3ds version remedying the graphical issues. I felt it’s less of a good start and more of a “Gaming standard “ which is why it holds up so well. Anyway I really enjoyed this and I thought your review was very fair and unbiased and you made a ton of good points on what is a touchy subject for Nintendo fans. Great job

I've played every single port and release of the game to date and the only one that I really find the most enjoyment out of is the remake, it just fixes so many pointless pacing issues and other design flaws the other versions had that it's nearly impossible to go back once you've played it. I really appreciate your effort that went into making this video, I think it's a masterpiece in terms of reviewing and it's pretty impressive you didn't feel the need to restrict yourself to just a short 10 minute video.

I’ve only gotten past the spot where the Master Sword is obtained in ALttP. Wind Waker I’ve cleared the opening dungeon and the first two main ones. Twilight Princess was dropped after the first one... Wait, maybe not. I found TP sooo dull and slow, even by Zelda standards. I don’t hate it, to be clear. Yeah I miss those things. Green blood was always weird to me, even as a kid, and didn't make sense or remove the severity of the issue. Blood is blood, it's just this blood looks weird. I thought it was better to not use it as censorship but just for artistic reasons like with aliens or bugs. And then I grew up with those original symbols, so seeing the redesigns later kind of threw me off when replaying the game with the GC re-release. A few of my friends even had the edited copies released much later where they already patched them out. It confused me even more since I grew up with OoT and MM using different symbols, and since I never played the censored version before playing MM, It's weird to me and feels like they retconned OoT and MM to share more connections than they originally had. Only years later did I find out that it was because of that censored version I had never heard about.

If you're exploring and paying attention to character dialogue and signs you'd be able to figure out most of the happy mask customers on your first try with the exception being the running man who you'd can very easily miss. For example the kid in the graveyard complains about not being intimidating enough, and the skullkid is named Skullkid but doesn't have anything resembling a skull. The heart pieces that require you to carry a mask to one place in the forest acts a similar way as the sign says you need to have an interesting or scary face to attract their attention. For Anju's brother if you found him during the child link portion you'd know he has family and if you found him during the adult link segment (which really isn't that hard seeing as you'll be exploring the lost woods again anyway) you'd find him acting depressed. Anju gave you the chicken to cheer someone up so it's pretty easy to out two and two together. The rest of the character either follow a similar logic where you'd know about them if you explored and found them already or are directly pointed out by the people asking you to deliver an item (like in the case of the perishables).
@zackc5973
@zackc5973 6 жыл бұрын
Marche800 those are all Very vague, lol. Yes they're hints, but you can't expect a player to catch on to things like that. I'll give you the chicken one, but not the mask ones. The game intends for you to talk to random people. Your average kid, or adult even, isn't gonna be a super sleuth who memorizes every NPCs physical features, name, and dialog for a completely optional side quest.

Dodatthangfo3retweets I feel that's the problem now, not back then where we seemed to have more patience to actually explore the actual games we played as it was an adventure, fantasy game. I did the same and figured out a lot of the stuff.
@zackc5973
@zackc5973 6 жыл бұрын
ssjup81 no, back then we had more patience but that doesn't excuse the games poor design. I'm not holding the game to today's standards. Majora's mask is an example of a game that makes you explore and is fun to play with no help and pulls off being challenging while still being fair to the player. despite everyone bitching about the water temple in oot, I feel that dungeon is one of the best in Zelda history because it's actually challenging and is an example of good game design. The happy mask side quest, however, is obscure, completely optional, and doesn't even fit in with the rest of the game. the game intends for you to talk to every NPC until you happen to find the one that needs the mask you're wearing which is an example of padding and poor design and was poorly received from day 1. hence why the side quest has never been reincarnated in future titles, even the game that was built around the same masks. while the water temple was reincarnated twice.
@ssjup81
@ssjup81 6 жыл бұрын
Dodatthangfo3retweets See, for me, talking to everyone didn't bother me and never found it tedious. I even had no problem with the water temple and played the whole game without a game guide. Not like I had internet yet. That aside, to me, the game wasn't poorly designed. Never had any real issues with game.
@zackc5973
@zackc5973 6 жыл бұрын
ssjup81 I don't think you comprehended what I wrote. I never said anyone should need a guide for the water temple. I never said exploring the world or the simple act of talking to every npc was tedious. I also never said that I felt oot was a poorly designed game in general I DID SAY, the water temple was an example of good game design and fun to play and was one of the best dungeons ever. Which is why the water temple despite crybabies complaining about having to actually think to solve puzzles, was reincarnated twice. I also said including something like the happy mask side quest, a side quest where you have 3 masks (not counting the Keaton mask) and you have to wear each mask and talk to every obscure npc (including one that playing the game normally most people wouldn't even meet) until you happen to stumble across the one that wants said mask was only included to pad out the game (make the game feel bigger than it was) instead of including a side quest that felt fun (or even gave you a decent reward justifying the tedious nature of talking to every npc up to 4 times) is poor game design. I repeat, the side quest was so bad it had no form of reincarnation in any later title. If you personally had no issue with it, great. Doesn't change that it's poor game design.

I needed to pause at 13:10. This is no offense but I'd never expected someone could question the text speed of OoT... First of all, the text speed isn't just slow. The text speed is reflecting the talking speed. If a character talks fast his text will also be printed fast. For example, the moment the Deku Tree dies we can feel how his life is running out. The Deku Tree get weaker and weaker, he barely has the power to speak much more but he is pushing himself to deliver the important information to Link but in the end, he couldn't tell Link everything. His last words came so slow so we know how bad his state really was... I'm sure, if the Deku Tree wouldn't die at this moment he would've told Link everything about his origin and Link's mother. The text speed allowed us to "see" how different characters talk. In fact, since it was the goal of the developers to deliver a cinematic experience to the player, the text speed allowed them to show us more emotions of the characters in the game. Just plain text wouldn't be such an emotional experience. In later Zelda games they kept it up to reflect emotions in the presentation of the printed text and they even did more. The quieter someone talks the smaller the text appears. The louder someone talks the bigger the text appears. IMO, it is a neat way to port emotions without dubbed cutscenes.

I had the GCN version too. I got it because I preordered it with Wind Waker. The Gamecube version wasn't a good port for me, personally. I didn't like the controls as the N64 version felt like it was perfect for it. I didn't like the GC's controller set up and would always end up going back to my N64 version back then.

3DS cause of the better graphics, higher FPS, easier access to inventory and switching items. Also it has got the Master Quest included for people that want some extra challenge.

You forgot the shortcut. Take a lit Deku Stick and light up a Bomb Flower on a wall next to the boulders blocking the path and you arrive at the Lost Woods, saving you minutes of travel.

31:36 did you really make the same mistake as arin hanson? There is a shortcut in the gorons city that takes you back to the forest!!! The goron next to the bomb flowers tells you to bring him fire from big gorons room and you then bring fire up to blow up the bombs then you use the deku sticks and boom bombs explode and shortcut opens * mind blown*
@ExoParadigmGamer
@ExoParadigmGamer 6 жыл бұрын
+Rainbow Dash You can't open that shortcut without bomb flowers, which you can't pick without the Goron Bracelet, which you get from Darunia after getting Saria's Song from the forest. But then again, I did learn from Master Quest that you can light bomb flowers on the wall using a torch, and there are wall bomb flowers near the shortcut. But that's an obscure trick to begin with, and you need Din's Fire (which you need bombs to acquire) to light the torches in Goron City so you can light your Deku Sticks. So yes, I know about that shortcut, but it's not usable until after it's most useful application.

ExoParadigmGamer did you not talk to the goron next to the shortcut? He asked you for fire. ( from big brothers room) and you use deku sticks to light the bombs

They couldn't really upgrade the music on the 3DS because of how it was made. A lot of it included weird samples from a random CD that can't easily be recreated

31:35 I could understand this being made on the first playthrough. Somewhat. But are you telling in none of those replays you used the shortcut that connect Goron City *directly* to the Lost Woods, thus saving time by just going to Death Mountain, then going to the Lost Woods and back again for the song?

You still have to go to the goron village, get to Saria, and run all the way back. He mentioned that there were shortcuts, just that they were only a bandaid solution. There's definitely a dungeon 2 hump you need to get over before the game starts getting fun again.

Ok, this video did NOT have to be an hour long. You spent 1/3 of the video saying the text is slow and the game looks like shit. How hard is it to say, "the text can be annoying because it's slow and can be tedious on repeat playthroughs", and "the visuals are dated and don't hold up when compared to games released the same year". That took me less an a minute to say. And talking about the gamecube version is not really relevant because it's just a port of the original aside from master quest which you could have mostly talked about with the 3ds version.

For a man that experienced the game 4 times in a row in different versions I think he kept it pretty short LMAO I think the point of his videos is about detailing the experience and not just state facts in a dynamic format (even tho leaning a bit more towards that would help the quality and reception of said videos)

Dude what? He took the time out to compare ALL 3 VERSIONS! He literally completed essentially the same game 4 times for this. He explained even the minute differences. I appreciated the gamecube version input because i was able to see the differences and the little things he points out are what makes it interesting. He also kept the gamecube segment pretty short.

ChacePlayz also, man; I think that point was for the irony. Long videos and reach aside, if you wanna know what points he talked about just keep skipping until you hit the end. It was explained just as you put it in the recap about why he chose Replace in the end. The meat and potatoes of the video was on his perspective and why it meant so much. While it sounds nitpicky, a lot of little problems add up and he’s trying to hammer home that those little problems made for a less enjoyable game overall
