My first gear / improvisation video of the year is finally here. Sorry it’s taken so long!! Gig prep, writing and recording has taken the priority recently.
‘Tonal Corruption’ - I was recently very kindly lent an Earthquaker Devices Data Corruptor pedal by my good friend Russ Freeman of the incredible Red Nettle (Southend based progressive metal legends - go check ‘em out).
These pedals have always intrigued me - many of the videos you see show these pedals as uncontrollable unpredictable signal destroyers....in all the right ways. I have wanted to have an attempt at using one myself but there’s always been a slightly more important piece of gear to buy.....until now, thanks to Russ!!
So I’m going to try and make two or three different videos pairing the DC up with some different gear, basically to see if I can reign it in a bit and see if it is as uncontrollable as it looks!!
This first video I decided to keep it simple. I’ve used my Rucci Maximal Drone to provide some tones to feed into the DC, and then feed the DC into an Afterneath just to give it a little reverb.
Anyone who’s had a go using one of these DC’s will probably agree, you kinda just hit and hope and let the craziness take you over. That was the case for a while...then all of a sudden I found a cool setting. Plenty of sub oscillation and a mental high pitched sweep when you flick between the Master Oscillator settings. Gently tweaking the Subharmonic knob (not quite a whole click) gave a little tonal change, and then I found you can almost play a melody by switching through the octaves. I then used the square wave and frequency modulator sparingly to add a little colour here and there.
At this point, once I felt I had at least a touch of control over the pedal, I hit record and improvised for almost 10 minutes. The results of which can be heard here in this video! It was a lot of fun trying to be subtle and melodic - not sure if I achieved that but feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you thought! Hopefully at least, it’s a Data Corruptor video that’s a little different to most!
