Be careful, it’s very easy to get hooked by the genius of Rory G. I got hooked back in ‘71 and I’m still an addict. Once hooked there is no cure. Rory has produced so many wonderful albums and songs it’s difficult to say which is the best. Thanks for a great reaction to the greatest.

One of the best guitarists ever!

This was my reaction when I first heard Rory. I was like "Who is this guy and how on earth have I never heard of him before.

Nice reaction! Rory was a brilliant, self taught multi-instrumentalist (acoustic/electric guitar, mandolin, electric sitar, harmonica, alto sax). From '66-'70 he was the driving force behind the power trio band Taste (releasing 2 albums), then had an impressive solo career from 71-'94 (releasing 11 studio & 3 live albums). His catalogue is extensive and beautifully diverse, embracing blues, rock, folk, jazz and a bit of funk. Rory's live performances were legendary - a beast on stage, very shy and unassuming off-stage. Although he did play some large venues, he preferred smaller, more intimate settings as his connection with fans was uniquely special and he was very approachable. It is worth noting that he was pretty much the only one with guts enough to perform repeatedly in Belfast during The Troubles, giving the youth an opportunity to forget about the conflict for at least a few hours each time. I've seen most of the top performers of that era, and no one came close to seeing Rory live - and I am so grateful to have seen him, if only once. Anyway, there's so much Rory to explore, so I hope you keep on...

It's a shame you don't know him, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and probably on stage unbeatable. His shows were legendary, energy to catch fire on stage, multi-instrumentalist, a beautiful trajectory (I suggest you read more about him), a myth in Ireland and faithful admirers for us. An artist far above average, admired and respected by the big stars, he never cared about fame, walked an independent path, preferred playing in theaters (because of his proximity to people) than in Arenas, an extremely loving person, without a hint of the vanities of artistic medium. Woo hoo! It was wonderful watching you discover the amazing talent that was Rory Gallagher, the Irish guitar wizard! This was 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Rory was in the same class as Hendrix, Clapton & Beck, was courted by the Rolling Stones when Mick Taylor left, and was wanted as a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore when he left Deep Purple. Rory is well loved in Europe but less known in the States, since he never released a single (but still sold over 30 million albums). Many famous guitarists consider him to be an inspiration (Slash, Alex Lifeson, the Edge, Johnny Marr, etc). Rory played both electric and acoustic guitar (check out his version of "Out on the Western Plain"), electric sitar ("Philby") mandolin ("Goin' to My Hometown"), harmonica and sax. Rory was a wonderful rocker (such intense energy), but an even better bluesman. Check out the powerful "I Wonder Who" at his 1984 performance in Belfast. Simple stunning. There's a world of fabulous recordings for you to check out. The bassman is Gerry McAvoy, who was with Rory for much of his career. The drummer at this time was Brendan O'Neill. Super tight band. We lost Rory in 1995 at the age of 47 due to an infection following a liver transplant.

Really liked your first reaction to RORY he used the exact same fender Stratocaster his whole career he formed his first three piece called TASTE in the late sixties ,and.his record company released two singles from the debut album which became big hits in Germany and the second single" WHAT'S GOING ON "was no#1 in Germany , but Rory didn't appreciate the record company releaing these songs behind his back. .whats going on....... clocks in under three minutes and is great song . taste played the legendary Isle of Wight show in1970 and disbanded after that show , rory continued releasing albums but touring and the stage is what he lived for had huge following in Germany and his homeland Ireland .

Now you know Rory you will never forget him. Each year a memorial in Ballyshannon Ireland my dream is to go rhere with my son who is also a guitarplayer. I am 71 and bought his first single( whats going on) just to be able to record it on my taperecorder because I did not have a recordplayer.Since then I bought many albums and get tears in my eyes whenever I see him play in occasions like this. Rory Gallagher was born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1948. The family moved to Derry in 1949 but then Rory and his brother moved back to RoI, to Cork with their mother in 1956. Rory’s first band as a recording artist was Taste, who had moderate success but due to mis-management that group split on the verve of a major breakthrough, following a brilliant set at the Isle of Wight Festival. Rory started a solo career with bassist Gerry McAvoy (who played on all of Rory’s studio albums through to 1990). The band was initially a power trio, with Wigan Campbell on drums for the self titled debut album, Deuce and Live in Europe. Then in 1973 he recruited Lou Martin and Rod de'Ath - drums as a replacement for Campbell. This quartet was a golden period for Rory and deserved much, much greater success than they received. In 1978 following recording session in San Francisco Rory was dissatisfied with the results and refused permission for the recordings to be released, probably because Rory did not see eye to eye with the producer who had been brought in, Rory having self produced up to that point. This prompted the departure of de’Ath and Martin, with several of the song being re-recorded for the next album, Photo-Finish because to the tight deadline for its delivery to the record company. In 2011 the abortive San Francisco sessions were released as Notes From San Francisco and it turned out to be a really good album. It was remixed by Rory’s nephew Daniel. Rory’s brother/manager Donal insists that Rory had relented and given permission for the album to be remixed but I am sceptical since to took 17 years from Rory’s death for this to happen, it was a successful exercise and I am sure Rory would have been pleased with the result.

Rory was such a beloved Irish treasure that even during the times of open hostilities in Ireland when Rory booked a show date both Catholic & Prodistants knew there would be no violence at the show or surrounding area.

Rory is often described as the best guitarist you never heard of. This is from the 70s. Born in Belfast and raised in Cork Ireland. He was offered the Rolling Stones job before Woody but turned them down. His band Taste got second treatment and the label's big band Cream promoted hard. Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world and he answered you would have to ask Rory Gallagher- typical generosity of JH. In the tribal music scene of the early 70s you were Clapton of Gallagher and Clapton was better promoted. Rory was all about playing music and never quite got the business side of it. He had a loyal base of fans who adored him, still do. His live shows were superb. He was great with the audience it felt like a party and you were his friends. He seems to be getting to be noticed again which is nice. For an old man it is good to see you enjoying what I was listening too as a teenager.

Rory Gallagher was Irish. This was probably recorded live late 70’s perhaps 1979 or early 1980. It’s a pity that so few people know him as he had be touring all around the world setting the fire every time he went on stage. Brillant artist able to be a guitar hero while playing blues rock but also brillant while playing unplugged traditonal blues. The only one able to do that. Now Joe Bonamassa is able to do that.
