For 8 holes, this is one of the greatest sporting events I have ever witnessed. The shot Rory hit on 8 was insane, only to have Reed drain his putt too. Even Rory had to come over and give Reed a hug because of how incredible their play was. I'll never for get this.

Yeah, it's not a bad thing to get out-driven. Too many people place emphasis on out-driving their opponent. Reed stuffed his next shot and was rolling in dagger birdies. Much more meaningful. Proved himself

I work at a golf course in North Dakota. A lot of my coworkers and I were asked to volunteer this event. Had an absolute blast. You’re too damn wore out to watch much, but I’ve been to plenty 3m opens at tpc twin cities and nothing matched the energy of this. Will remember the 2016 Ryder cup for life

I was the 8th hole. I have witnessed some pretty amazing athletic events. Like the Minneapolis miracle. This singles match ranks right up there with them.

Uh, Patrick Reed stole and cheated at his first college, was kicked out, then did the same at his second college, which made him universally hated by his teammates. Reed then kicked his family where it hurts, even after they had sacrificed so much time and money to support him, married a crazy person with an abusive, bullying family (the Karains are the precursors to Ronnie and Cindy Watts), and now has lied, cheated, stolen, talked smack about folks after HIS poor play... Patrick Reed makes me ashamed to be from the same country as him. The only thing he has in his favor is a talent for putting a ball in a hole. Ethically, morally, intellectually? He's a zero.

As good as this was, the Mickelson/Garcia match was even better golf. I'll have to look it up, but I think Phil had 10 birdies and Garcia 8 or 9. Might be the other way around or even more. All I know was that it was insane golf. This one though, for pure energy and being the first match out, was electrifying.

what happens at hole 15? I understand its a respect each other's skills thing, but what does the announcer mean by give give?

In match play you can “give” your opponent their putt so they don’t have to hit it. It’s done with short putts out of respect that you know they would make it anyways and you wouldn’t want to gain a point because you made them putt something close and they happen to miss. A give give is where they both agree to pick up their putts as if they both made them so they tie the hole.

Errm perspective please. This match was epic for only 4 or 5 holes on the front nine. Overall both players will tell you they played poorly that day. The scores Mcilroy carded would have seen him lose to 11 out of 12 of the American team as they both carded rounds of estimated level par. Contrast this to the Garcia Mickelson game who posted an estimated pair of 63's that day! birdies everywhere for those guys and 18 shots better than the Mcilroy Reed match!

Errm nobody cares, this match was hyped not only because of the amazing play at the start of the match, it also was due to the importance of being the 1st match, the energy they both brought to the match even if it was holing a putt for bogey and Mcilroy vs Reed who were at the time the best performers for their team
