While offering continuity of quality, Dark Sun also ventures into wholly new territory for the post-metalcore band.
Much of the new ground broken on Dark Sun is due to the experience of frontman Rory Rodriguez, who wrote the majority of the album about his dad’s death. “The sun burned out the day that my dad died,” Rory explains, illuminating the album’s title.
Those are the themes we explore in this episode of Trevor Talks. Rory shares with us about losing his own father just as he became a father himself, how COVID catalyzed the band’s role in fans’ hearts, and what it’s like to be a band on the rise. He also offers insight into his personal struggle with anxiety and how songwriting continues to be the lifeline that pulls him through.

I feel really bad, because hearing how he discussed fans trauma dumping, it's a really heavy thing for an idol to deal with. Just because someone helped you through a tough time does not mean that they are obligated to also be told or hear about your specific experience. I met him at the December 12th NYC show with Bad Omens and approached him to thank him for everything he has done for me and fans alike through his music and I could hear from his response just how tired he was. So, I cut the interaction short and just went back to my seat so he could be left alone. Just as the lyrics go in Dark Sun's "Paper Heart" - "I'm not made of stone and I'm not a machine. The weight of the world is too much for me to hold. My paper heart will fold".

Great interview - thank you. Love how Rory has a deeper connection with music and how feeling/emotions play a massively material role in making a song special and relatable to a fellow human. A pure, beautiful, honest and vulnerable relationship with the essence of what it is to mingle with music/emotion and the human experience ❤

Dark Sun is AMAZING!!!!! First time I heard dreamstate I put it on repeat for like 3 days. I have 4 songs from that album on my daily playlist now.

I’m so in love with this album! It’s an album that every single track is amazing! It takes you on a sound journey and so much light and shade. It’s amazing! My favourite track is Without You! It’s sooooo good ❤️

Being softer doesn't mean fans will leave, what matters is how the soft sounds. Hands Like Houses, Picturesque and Emarosa are three bands that went soft and lost most of their fanbase. I don't like them now but I do like Dayseeker. That's because Dayseeker's new music is a unique sound, one which people have always hungered for. There's enough generic metalcore, post-hardcore and soft rock bands to feed those who want to consume that, but there's not enough in the R&B/Pop vocals segment and Synthwave segment. We're actively looking for more bands that fill that niche.

@@TrevorTalksPodcast That is where he LIVES, but where do his parents come from. Rodriguez. Mexico or below..... He is an interesting guy! Thanks for taking this interview with him. I believe these guys will be huge later. The appeal on them for wide range of styles is massive. Heavy and light. They remind me of how Linkin Park was at the start in 2000. I also discovered these guys through Sleeptalk in the Pandemic and then bang. For the first time i was genuinely excited about an album coming out when they announced Dark Sun and then thankfully they dripped out Neon Grave and had a little something to keep people going. I appreciate that from them to look after their fans.

@@TrevorTalksPodcast It takes ages sometimes to get used to some tracks and appreciate em. Sleeptalk is like an instantaneous hit. So is Neon Grave after 6 seconds of realising that there is an unresolved tone and major tone kind of like used by Hendrix at the start of Purple Haze, and then its all good. But where are Rory's parents from?

_Dark Sun_ is better than the _Sleeptalk_ album. You can listen to it non-stop without skips unlike the latter. Nonetheless, I don't know why _Sleeptalk_ only has one music video but _DS_ has five. _ST_ needs two more videos. They're losing streams and sales not doing it.
