Following on from my previous Supercar War video, we now go into the details of each of the five models that partook in this monumental part of automotive history, starting with the machine that kicked off the conflict back in 1986, the Porsche 959, a car originally destined to compete in the famous Group B Rally, but instead became one of the most advanced sports cars of its era thanks to a perfect blend of technology, style and performance.

Decades ago, friends' walls were adorned by the F40 and others' Countach. While mine was graced by a red 959, pure metallic attraction!.

@Kenan Turkiye .. +1 .. The practice of a true Porsche Fan .... "While mine was graced by a red 959, pure metallic attraction!." At the 1986 New York Auto show behold the Porsche 959 in a cut-away display. .. Many Porsche fans stood in awe taking in the 959s technology. .. In the October of 1997, I'd take delivery of my very own 1998 Porsche Carrera S (993) .. That Artic Silver Metallic 993 coupe continues to park in my garage. .. To death, do us part ,,, they say of the best Porsche.....

Just watched the Vinwiki story on the 959 just yesterday. Also the 959 was never intended to go rallying. Those Porsche rally cars shown were 953's, essentially just development mules for the 4WD system intended for the 959.

During that Vinwiki interview, he even commented that everyone says the 959 was for rallying and they're all wrong. (In so many words)

@@sirmingusdewiv8325 The 959 was meant for Group B however, the canned Group B GT (of which the Jag XJ220, Ferrari F40 and even the Ruf BTR would've been a part of)

Great video, one of my favorite Porsches. Had the pleasure of being on the repair team that fixed Ralph Lauren's, "snuck in" 959 Sport after he'd wadded it up at Mid Ohio in 1995 or 6. The replacement windshield was $6K US iirc. Not like money was an object on that job, but it was eye watering to me at the time.

Even Boris Becker had one back when he was a teenager. In fact he maxed his 959 on an Italian Autostrada at about 326kph.

The 4 wheel drive system was not invented by Porsche at this instant. That was taken directly from the KdF Type 87 from 1938. At the same time the Carrera 4 (964) used the Audi system and was unable to move on snow or ice.

Great stuff Rory! The first model car I ever assembled was a 959 and at the time I thought it looked every bit as sci-fi-futuristic as the Lamborghini Countach poster on my bedroom wall, just with curves instead of angles. Kind of funny how very 80's the styling of both cars looks now. :) I spent the best part of an entire day at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart, but I didn't see the Gruppe B concept anywhere... perhaps it was in one of the workshops undergoing routine maintenance/preservation. A shame, it would have been nice to get a few photos, not that there was any lack of stuff at which to point a camera in that wonderful place.

family had one of these beauties, very good memories of driving down the beachfronts. Sold it recently to a collector whos getting the engine chromed, cant wait to see it

@@e28forever30 he's doing it up for shows and the like. Very picky guy but he'll be taking good care of it. It's not ACTUAL crome mind you, just chrome effect. So shiny it's like a mirror. It works honestly

I often called the 959 the Princess Leia of Supercars because of its design elements evoking Princess Leia's weird buns from Star Wars. Not sure if this also gives you such vibes.

I never liked the look of Porsches' That is until I was allowed to use the bosses 911 after a good week and keep it till Monday. It wasn't particularly comfortable and some of the fittings were of questionable quality with an indifferent gearchange. However people were reluctant to overtake me and glancing down at the badge on the steering wheel you just get that certain feeling that your driving somethings very special.

I heard the G gear was actually there for noise test compliance. basically the car would be too low gong off the line so they went something like *ahh, zis gear is not for starting, its for offroading* (source: carmugdeon show)
