I have rosacea without breakouts but have the flushing, stinging cheeks, broken blood vessels. Interestingly the biggest trigger of mine seems to be fluorescent lights (which all my doctors find bizarre) and also going from cold outdoors to heat indoors. Chocolate, spicy food and heat don't affect me, but alcohol can

ago I’m so mad, but glad, because after years of frustration, i was on vacation and the only thing i could find to clean my face was noxema, and now my skin is healing. I stopped using it when i got home and the rosacea returned, i resumed it and it stopped again. So my routine now is to use a mild soap face wash in AM, then before my usual afternoon shower i rub noxema on my face, let it sit a few minutes, jump in shower and use a gentle wash cloth and semi warm water to brush it off my face. Then I follow with a gentle soap in the shower cause it seems to leave some kind of residue, not in an entirely bad way, im just not used to it so i wash it off. After i dry off after shower i take a cotton pad and Aesops green tea toner and gently brush across face. Sometimes I’ll put a serum but if i do i be sure to rinse off before bedtime with just water and pat dry my face. I still have a few broken blood vessels but the overall splotchiness and red aggravation is gone. I think i just had clogged pores and the usual effoliators were too abrasive. Noxema is perfect

I have tried azelaic acid, metrogel, ipl treatments and lots of creams but nothing seems to help....My skin is always quiet red and it burns when I flush...It seems to flare up more in winter... That sucks. Sorry to hear that but understand that the meanness is immaturity and ignorance. People like that aren’t worth getting upset over. You don’t need or want approval from anyone like that. They’ll cause havoc and pain to everyone around them so stay clear. It takes a ton of work for mean people to change so most never change. That’s their problem, not yours. Check out the new mini-series ‘Under the Bridge’ if you want to understand how mean people can cause havoc, pain and worse. Surround yourself with people who are only smart and kind (have lots of common sense, like to learn, though no one’s perfect…we make lots of mistakes when young and as adults) if you want to be happy. Focus on who and what makes you happy and give mean people your strong boundaries. Being happy helps us stay healthy including our skin. Being truly and honestly smart, kind, healthy and happy will make you much more attractive than any mean person no matter how pretty they might look on the outside. All the best. ❤

Yes, lasers next please: I've had rosacea all my life (especially on my cheeks). I remember in school people would ask if I was wearing blush!!! Anyway, regular sessions of IPL over the past years have helped keep it in check, and I only get flare ups very occasionally now. Big no nos are: staying in the sun (I can't stand it though), overheated rooms, wearing a face mask in the heat, and wind burn (I ski with a face cover whatever the temperature is).... It's high maintenance but you gotta do what you gotta do. I remember some of my past flare ups intensely, they sting for days, and I would get pangs of anxiety from it, which made it worse ofc.... Strangely Paulas Choice BHA lotion has been a lifesaver....

Going to try IPL instead as its half the price and even if it takes more than 1 treatment it will be cheaper than having more than 1 Vbeam 😢

I find licorice root extract to be very helpful for my redness. I use Paula’s choice calm line (especially the serum) in addition to the azelaic acid at night and Eucerin’s redness relief night cream that also contains licorice root extract. Paula’s choice antioxidant pore purifier serum I believe also contains an azelaic acid dervivative. It works much more slowly than Vitamin C serums but is less irritating to me-I do find the general improvement in tone with Vitamin C also helps.

@@MZ-cp5rt It’s normal to get some tingling or itching when you first apply it, but I don’t think it should be painful...was your skin red/irritated after you washed it off. Side note: I love your jacket/shirt combo!. Your open discussion of this topic is very much appreciated. Thank you for sharing these more accessible options for self treatment. My derm prescribed me Metrogel, as well as a course of oral antibiotics for a particularly bad flare up of rosacea. After that, I found good success and stability with a very gentle cleanser, and Dr. Jart's Cicapair cream. In my case, I've found that sun exposure also def does not help, so a good, mineral sunscreen is also essential. Born and raised in New Zealand, and being of English and Irish ancestry, I remember vividly several of my great aunts suffering greatly from this, in a generation where such topics were not that widely discussed, nor recognized. There also just weren't that many products available, because of geography and technology. However, they all maintained very simple skincare and makeup routines, which I think helped them to be able to better cope with their condition. They also gave sunscreen to me for birthdays and holidays, which, in hindsight, probably saved my skin, to a large degree.

Another superb video from a true bright light...and that's you! I have concluded that Rosacea has a variety of causes, but the common thread is systemic inflammation. For me, I developed rosacea immediately following a course of Cipro antibiotics and an acutely stressful chapter in life. Here I am 14 years later finally sorting out the gut dysbiosis that ensued from that and other eras since then. Quite simply, a lack of beneficial bacteria in the gut results in an overgrowth of non-beneficial bacteria, such an e-coli. The good news is that this is a relatively easy fix. And I cannot stress enough the importance of a healthy diet, as that dramatically reduces the severity of rosacea. That's my nerd snippet. Thank you for fighting the good fight and being a physician for the people!

I am 43yold with rosacea type 2 developed when I turned 40. I have not had a flare up in two years. My triggers for flare ups are: tomatoes, spinach, pepper(chile), hot and humid weather, alcohol, uv rays of course . But the worst is hot pepper and I am Mexican 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank you for all the tips you give, I have been following you for two years on Instagram And your advice have work wonders. I do visit my local Derma but I have added to my routine some things you have mentioned and my skin looks wonderful. Merci bcp

Thank you very much for the themes every week, very enlightening. Can we have a video on eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis; the differences, triggers/causes; and recommendations for a treatment? I suddenly developed eczema and unfortunately in the visible zone (neck). Having hard time because it comes and goes with the changing weather and it's quite unpleasant and itchy. Thank you!

Dr. Idriss, I would love it if you could do a video all about body care. I've always been so curious about what a proper body care routine would look like because obviously, our bodies can handle a little more than our faces can. However, I'm sure there are still some mistakes we are all making when it comes to taking care of the skin on our bodies. Especially when it comes to shaving and dealing with things like ingrown hairs or razor burn.

I’m wondering if I’m developing eczema. When my skin on my forehead is too dry I get this raised red mark. It isn’t crusty it’s just red and it burns and then itches. Once it’s moisturized it goes away. It’s so weird. This just started about a month ago.🤷🏼‍♀️

My biggest trigger is high humidity, and when it's combined with a higher temperature, it's a guarantee for a bad flare up. I'm lucky enough not to be affected by spicy food though :)

I've been looking forward to a rosacea vid from you 🤗Thank you! I started to get rosacea this past year and have felt gutted by the change in my skin tone. Wearing masks tends to aggravate it. My derm recommended Bioderma Sensitive micellar water wash + Bioderma mousse for double cleanse days; Neostrata Restore serum, which I LOVE but can't stand the pilling, plus Rosacure w/30SPF for day and Rosacure Fast for the night (I'm based in EU so not sure if that's a common brand for N.Americans?). If anything, it's simplified my skincare routine 🙃

Hi Dr Shereene I developed rosacea during perimenopause and had some real difficulties with it initially. I've never had the pimples, but I did notice textural changes to the nose and cheeks (bumpy textured skin). Azelaic acid and centella are both staples for me, but retinoids really helped with the textural changes. I worked up to alternating evenings of tretinoin and azelaic acid, which kept it under control for a couple of years. Last year the flares worsened (stress lol) and I had to put the tretinoin aside and go down to a retinaldehyde. My skin has calmed down a lot and I'm going back onto tretinoin in September. I'm Scottish with fitzpatrick one skin, my mum has rosacea and I'm a fairly classic case. I had to remove all fragrance from my skincare, as my skin will not tolerate it at all - even in a cleanser. I also occasionally get eye infections/irritation and use drops as required. The damaged blood vessels are an issue, even when the rosacea itself is very calmed down. I use green colour correctors under makeup to disguise them, as I can't afford laser. Here in the UK it's VERY expensive. My best advice is to keep skincare simple whilst in the throes of a flare, as the stinging from skincare can be very unpleasant. Simple aqueous cream in a thick layer can be used as a gentle cleanse (when even your normal gentle cleanser stings), a gentle moisturiser and a gentle mineral spf - that's it. Once the skin calms down I go back to my treatments and normal skincare. I don't consume alcohol (due to meds for my severe arthritis), I don't eat spicy foods, I never sunbathe and the only trigger mentioned I indulge in a bit of chocolate occasionally. Life has to be lived though and a bit of chocolate is one of life's little pleasures I'm not ready to give up. Best wishes.

Thank you Shereene for your video about Rosacea. I was recently diagnosed by my dermatologist that I have a very mild case of Rosacea. One product that my doctor recommended and I really like is Epionce Renewal Lite skin lotion. I have minimized the products I use and thank goodness it seems to be working. I would love love love to see a video about the laser treatments for rosacea!!! The things dr Idriss mentioned are also high histamine/histamine inducing, and alcohol is a DAO inhibitor which means it inhibits the enzyme that breaks down histamine.. I have histamine (and salicylate) intolerance and understanding that and implementing the knowledge has changed my rosaceq prone skin among my Clinique face oil and CeraVe moisturizer..
