When Rosalía shot this video she was an independent artist, this is the first single of her album El Mal Querer. It's inspired by a novel 'Flamenca', Malamente is the first Chapter, she is talking about a toxic relationship with her bf. She feels something bad is gonna happen.

As Juliana mentioned down below “Malamente”, is the first track of her second album “El Mal Querer” , (the bad loving). El Mal Querer is a conceptual álbum meaning there’s a common theme running through and linking all songs. It was her dissertation for university and was inspired by the story of a 14th century novel called “el romance de Flamenca”, where a man imprisons his partner and she rebels by getting herself a lover. Rosalia gives this tale a twist by updating the story to a modern day abusive relationship with each song representing a different chapter or phase in that relationship. In Malamente (badly) she has a foreboding premonition where she predicts at this early phase of the relationship that things aren’t going to go well but presses on regardless. The imagery in the video is littered with cultural references that complement the lyrics. I could go into intricate detail but would be here for ages. One stand out image is the skater guy in the Nazarene penitents cloak, (looking suspiciously like a KKK grandmaster but completely unrelated). These penitent cloaks are used in religious processions at Easter. In my opinion the message the video is trying to portray here is that as a woman you can get involved with a guy who on the surface might seem modern (skater board) but who is very traditional or conservative at heart, (Nazarene penitent cloak). The kids learning to bullfight could be a reference to toxic masculinity how as a society we train boys to behave a particular way and how they consequently develop, (souped up cars), stereotyped male behaviour. One car is wrapped in paper and offered as a present to the female, but earlier in the video we witness how this vehicle runs her over when she tries to escape the relationship. There are many talented female artists in the Latin/ Hispanic music scene but Rosalia stands out in that she’s a perfectionist and has everything tied up in an artistic vision, from the music, lyrics, composition, production, live stage production, visuals, conceptual narrative and the likes. Besides, her swag and presence is off the scale.

Both this video and “Pienso en tu Mira”, were filmed on location in Barcelona and Barbera del Valles, in Barcelona’s industrial belt, not too far from Rosalia’s home town of San Esteve Sesrovires. They were filmed by CANADA, a Barcelona audiovisual production company also involved in filming Dua Lipa’s “Physical”. Incidentally Rosalia’s great grandfather was Cuban so she has an admittedly very small link to the Caribbean.

Every song on this album carries the names of chapters from a 13th century novel (Romance Of Flamenca). She wrote this album for her final/Bachelors Degree. This chick is FIRE!!! Rolling Stone Magazine says this is the BEST Spanish language album EVER and I agree! Btw, I don’t speak Spanish either. This whole album is a literal masterpiece! CHECK IT OUT!❤️

The song talks about an "omen" about a relationship, that of the protagonist and her partner. Someone tells her everything's going to go wrong. And it's the first chapter in story, (11 chapters, 11songs) My favorite Rosalía song?, hard to decide one! But I could say Que no salga la luna, De aquí no sales, A Palé y Auto Cuture. But I really like all her songs 🙈 greeting from Colombia guys, and a hug for that beautiful baby ✨ (sorry for my English)

As a spanish native (from Andalucía, south Spain) I can explain a few things for you that people (even if they are spanish) don't use to say refering to Rosalia's art, cause look like you guys are trying really hard to understand it: her visual concept is universally pasional and interesting among other things, and that's why she ended reaching people all over the world, but most of them, if they are not from Spain, will still miss the main point of Rosalía's work (in this album, at least). And sorry but you will never fully understand completely, it's not that I'm arrogant, really, it's just the truth. I will explain those things as much as I can now: is not only about flamenco, there is a complex culture very extended in south Spain mostly (where i'm from) related to gypsies and people descendent from them or close to them or those called (slang) "canis" by many of us. I am not one of them but everyone in Spain can understand Rosalía's art cause we all are living surronded by this culture. This culture includes many rutines among their people, like "cars tunning" (look at the garage from the video) or a really big passion for religious celebrations (like that guy in purple, that costume is from one of our more important religious event in our Holy Week and she mixed it with urban skate. Street life is very important in South Spain society). All of this is impossible to explain, cause is a feeling, an atmosphere, and Rosalía catch it very well even if she is not from south Spain like me, but some of this spirit and people is all over the country, tho. Even so, a lot of people critized her cause she sings with our accent and she shows "our main culture and not hers" when she is not gipsy or even andalusian, but catalonian (from north-east)... The thing is that in the past a lot of andalusian people migrated to Cataluña, and the result of that is that some zones in there have a lot of descendents from andalusian's people and their traditions and obviously she had to live close to this ambient or something... But anyway, that's the reason of all the controversial thing... I hope been useful somehow guys. PD. As you can see, Spain is a very regional country. Is not like UK. Is more like if nowadays you put Ireland Scottland and UK together and form a single country... You will definetely struggle with each other points of view, traditions and differences... Personally, this is something bad and also good for me: makes our country very rich with a lot of diversity, but also creates a lot of troubles in relationships and politics.

Correction.... Rosalia is not Latin. She is European from Spain. However, some of the music she sings is Latin. The style of the music in this video Malamente is not Latin either. It's more of a unique style she created. She plays piano and invents some crazy unique beautiful songs. But, Rosalia is really in love with the Latin culture too.

Basic Spanish. You have to remember that Spanish is pronounced as its written. First rule. Do not produce it like English. The vowels always sound the same it does not change like in English. We have an extra letter to our alphabet. It's the "Ñ" (eñe). It sounds like the word onion in English. It's not pronounced like an "N". It's the official symbol for Spanish. Second, the letter "H" (áche), is always silent. Exception might be a name ( like Helen). Third, the letter "U" is silent if it follows the letters "G" and "Q" (Ex: que, guerra, queso). EXCEPTION: If the letter U has two dot on top, you pronounce the U (qüito). Forth, the double "LL" is not pronounced like an "L". It's pronounced like a "Y" or "J" (lluvia, calle, llegó). Fifth, the "RR" is not pronounced like a regular R. This R is extended or like English speaking people call it "rolling". The tongue has to be at the roof of your mouth behind the teeth and push air out with mouth almost closed, lips parted. If you try to do it with your mouth open like a regular R, it won't produce the same sound. The letter "E" is pronounced if it is at the end of a word, in the Spanish language (Rede, torre). There're Femine, masculine, and neutral words in Spanish. Anything ending in "O" is masculine, anything ending in "A" is femine, and any word ending with other letter are almost always neutral. Politeness is important to Spanish speakers...the way they are addressed is paramount. THEREFORE, there is the polite "You" (Usted) and informal You (tú). Anyone you don't know well, your parents, elders, including children are always: Usted. You add "Don" and Doña" to an elders, boss, or any one of some promince to their first name. You don't just say their name. It is kind of like adding a suffix: Ms., Mr., Miss) but, as a form of respect (Don Juan, Doña María). You can use Señor or Señora, if you are using their last name (Sr. Gomez, Sra. Cuevas). Lastly, you have to pronounce much harder the syllable that has an accent. If you don't, it will change the meaning of the word or mispronounce the word. A word that is always mispronounced by English speakers, that is a very basic word is "ádios" (Good-bye). It's pronounced Ah/dios, not a/dee/oz. That is basically all you have to remember to speak spanish. Fun fact: married women keep their maiden name. Their names are usually hyphenated. Their husband last name followed by her maiden name (Santos-Guzman). In Latin America you go to the Santos-Guzman home (husband and wife). NOT just the husband's name (Garcia Family). Also, if the wife chooses to just use her husbads last name she can add "de" to her name to show she is a married woman (María Colón de Santigo). A persons middle name and mother's maiden name is part of your full name in Latin America. EX: Juan Manuel Santander Roldan. That would be your full name on legal documents.

Wow... This is one of the first song and video I knew from her and I can quite relate with your reactions... It's just amazing in several senses. Answering to your doubt about what she's saying in the lyrics, I'd be glad to translate them for you, but I'd need some time. But, to cut a long story short, I can tell you, by now, that is the first chapter of a story she's telling in that album, the latest one she released, called "El mal querer" and speaks about starting to be afraid of her boyfriend. He's starting to feel extremely jealous about her and she feels it and is aware of the danger. That's why she appears in a moment of the video running before a man, and she's hitten by a car, trying to run away from him. And later, she appears lying in a part of a truck, looking like if she was dead. As you'll have noticed, even though you don't get most of them at first sight, this video is full of symbolism. Concerning the lyrics again, it's the start of a toxic relationship, where the woman is mistreated by her boyfriend. She based on an ancient story, called "Flamenca", and that's why, if you pay attention, each one of the videos belonging to this album has a number of the chapter (this is the first one, as I said). I adore this whole album ("El mal querer"), so it's really difficult for me to choose just one, and that you haven't commented yet, so I suggest you to react to a collaboration she made, with another Spanish singer, called C. Tangana, called "Antes de morirme" (the official video). By the way, that singer had a relationship with her but they finally split up and there's a lot of gossip in the social networks about it, since both are very famous here and also because he allegedly made a few references about their relationship in some of his songs. I'm really glad that you appreciate her art and that you're also keen in the lyrics, appart from her vocals, performance and so on, because every part has its own importance in the context.

The song talks about a broken toxic relationship and how finally she could go out, "badly", visuals and creativity are amazing, as always in her case Instead of polemics about if she is or not able to sing some styles of music from Souhern Spain, because she's not a part of determinate ethnic group, since I'm from Northern Spain and usually I can't stand Flamenco in general more than 5 minutes, (I never felt myself identified at all), now whit her I feel quite more close, hopefully she make a great fusion of Traditional southern Spanish styles with electronic music, hiphop and others, and the result is so good...

Rosalia is very particular, « El Mal Querer » album is a conceptual album through the bad love, toxic relationships, every song is a part of how she is falling into a rough and jealous relationship, who mades her go to hell and come back. You should look for the paroles of the whole album and then listen it and react. I do strongly recommend you to watch “El Perdón “, from Diana Navarro, the official video-clip. It has been recorded in one shoot, and she composed the song. It is about domestic violence. It is breathtaking. I like your reaction and you have a lovely baby. My favourite song of Rosalia is “A ningún hombre consiento”, which means to any man I will let... to chrash me again . So many people, men and women are living toxic relationships. She is saying loud and clear: Do not allow it. Be free.

This song is the first chapter of the story in her album. She meets a man and they start a relationship together but from the beginning she feels that he is not a good man. That is portrayed when she is carried by many men into the truck and also when she is in the motorbike she represents the bull and his man is preparing to put the blade in her (in the last shot that they show in the motorbike, the man is holding the spade behind him, hiding it so that rosalia cannot see). You should react to chapter 3 next, pienso en tu mirá, which is about jealousy and how the man doesn't let her out of the house so that other man cannot see her. Cheers! Your vids are good!!!

Malamente really means having bad thoughts that men in how they treat their girlfriends or wives. The bullfighter reference is how sometimes bad men entice a woman towards the red of the bullfighter cloak he waves to trap the woman and then he treats her badly in the relationship. Here on this video however, Rosalia's swag and confidence is saying I don't fall for that SH*T. Ok... As an "Essex-girl"-"Eastender"-daughter of Spaniards living in Spain for 20 years I wan't to `help` you understand this... I might be a bit late but hey! Help is never too late. Rosalía is using a few Spanish traditional clichés here. Especially bullfighting and "Easter" (Semana Santa). In Easter, a lot of Spanish towns have a bank holiday in Easter and they celebrate Christ's "Via Crucis" They represent Christ's Passion, how he died in the crucifix "supposedly" to clean human sin. This can vary from statues being paraded in the streets to people actually making penitance for him like walking many miles barefoot and such. In the video, there's a skateboarder wearing a "nazareno" (penitent) suit doing tricks on a skateboard full of nails as penitence... but in this case, it's actually a sarcastic critic of the tradition as them being very fanatic and irrational. It's just her opinion so it's OK. Also, there is a satiric but nonetheless elegant view of bullfighting which I find quite amusing and beautiful even though I hate it being an animal rights fighter but at the same time I have to say aesthetically it's actually quite "effin" sick XD
