The Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park is an AZA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums) zoo in Syracuse, New York. It is owned and operated by Onondaga County Parks with support from the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. The zoo is home to more than 900 animals representing 216 species on 43 acres (17 ha). Some of the more popular animals include Asian elephants, Humboldt penguins, Amur tigers, a Komodo dragon and the only Giant Pacific octopus exhibit in Central New York. The zoo opened a new Animal Health Center in 2022 that is the largest zoological medical center in New York state outside of the Bronx Zoo.
The Rosamond Gifford Zoo has been a continuously accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1987.
Exhibits
U.S.S. Antiquities cave
The U.S.S. Antiquities cave is an exhibit that simulates a submarine voyage through time from life's earliest days in the ocean to creatures living on land. Exhibits range in size and include insects, freshwater and marine life, reptiles, and amphibians.
Adaptations of Animals
The Adaptations of Animals wing features animals that have evolved unique adaptations to help them survive in their native habitats. The Nocturnal Animals area is on a reverse light cycle to allow visitors to see animals that are active at night.
Diversity of Birds aviary
The Diversity of Birds aviary is a large, lofty free flight space that simulates a rainforest habitat and primarily features warm-weather birds from around the world.
Social Animals Building
This building is home to animals that live in social groups and includes Amur leopards, Cape porcupines, North American porcupines, Golden lion tamarins, Black-and-white ruffed lemurs, Meerkats and the winter quarters for the zoo's Komodo dragon.
Outdoor Birds
The zoo's large Waterfowl Pond showcases many aquatic birds including a flock of Chilean flamingos, Hooded mergansers, Common goldeneye, Ross's geese, Wood ducks, Cuban whistling ducks and many more.
Wildlife Trail
The Wildlife Trail is a 0.5-mile (0.8 km) trail that takes visitors past animals such as blue cranes, Red River hogs, Turkmenian markhor, Amur tigers, red wolf, Thorold's deer, red pandas, Humboldt penguins, Andean bears, Steller's sea eagles, gray wolves, Snow leopard, Reeve's muntjacs and Bactrian camels.
Helga Beck Asian Elephant Preserve
The exhibit is home to the zoo's elephant herd and features about 7 acres of outdoor grounds and a husbandry building with room for up to 12 elephants. The zoo cares for and breeds Asian elephants as part of the Species Survival Plan for this critically endangered species overseen by its accrediting organization, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.
Domestic Animal Barn
The Domestic Animal Barn and yard are home to several endangered Heritage breeds of livestock.
Primate Park
Primate Park, which opened in 2010, is an outdoor exhibit with mesh walls, rope swings, large rocks and a waterfall feature. Siamangs, eastern black-and-white colobuses and common patas monkeys take turns in the outdoor space on a rotating basis in warm weather.

Hi I'm a volunteer here. The red fox at 1:00:00 is wild, there are a number of wild foxes in the area up here and they sometimes come in from the surrounding Burnet Park. You're lucky to have seen one though, I've only caught one before after hours while it is cooler with less people. Red foxes were last part of the zoo in early 2018, since at that point all species on the back trail, between tigers and red wolf / elephants were removed due to concerns they could be stressed by renovations happening at the time in the vicinity. There are active plans to have more than just benches back there in the near future, though currently those plans don't include new animals in that section. As for the leopard / lemur exhibit, that is largely just done in summer when it is too hot for our leopard to want to go out, so since he would rather be in air conditioning anyways, the lemurs get access to the space as a newer environment for them / extra enrichment as well. Also for clarification, our elephant barn dog Cora stays overnight with one of the keepers rather than at the zoo itself, serving a unique role more for the humans than the animals, since along with being a great morale boost for visitors and staff, she also serves a key training role for newer staff, who can work with her before the elephants since she knows all the same commands.

Also I know that before the Komodo Dragon exhibit it was the former Indian Peafowl exhibit I was wondering why did you guys get rid of it and not have it roaming free like most zoos do
@bobfreds
@bobfreds 6 ай бұрын
@@user-vi7bi4qs1y I’m not sure on the reasoning with the Peafowl because that was before my time doing any work there, but as of last year we do now have free roaming birds when the temperature is warm enough, with our flock of 24 Guineafowl.

One of my favorite zoos to go to here in New York. Although I will say I miss when they had mandrills (I would have loved to see them in the Primate Park exhibit). Hopefully they’ll bring them back sometime in the future, I’m also hoping that one day they decide to add an Indian rhino either in with the white lipped deer or along the hillside with the takin and markhor.

I guess I'm not the only one who keeps an African spurred tortoise . His name is Herman and he's almost 40 . Unfortunately the weather is chilly yet for him to be outside; yet we've had an unusual winter . Those warm days it's good to see him outside .

That's great, African spurred tortoises are great animals. Florida Winter is nothing compared to most others but it does get too cold for Sheldon some nights.
