I'm always amazed at how some of the repairs you get are like adventures that most people could not hack. They would quit, take shortcuts, fail or just die. But your skills, resourcefulness, intelligence and just plain stubbornness puts you in the hero's shoes on jobs like this. Much respect and admiration. I want to be like that. Thanks.

When I was 14 I had the privilege of working alongside Sam Bush for a week or so. He was employed by my brother in law at Tennessee musical instruments and one project was building open back mountain banjos. One particular one was done in a sunburst finish and it was given to me for helping out. It was incredible to be surrounded by musicians who would jam in the old post office on breaks or when a client came in and wanted to demo one of the many instruments. Amazing to watch people just exude talent. It looked effortless but years of playing were manifested before my eyes. I still have the banjo but have never really mastered it. It is a one of a kind with a serial number of 001. I have always appreciated the experience and the music from the many talents I was able to meet.

I've learned a lot from Jerry.... I had a Kentucky with a broken neck .. it came apart at the scarfing joint.. I fixed it myself after not being able to find a luthier in the area... you can't hardly tell it was broken. I have also built deer antler saddles for both my Kentucky mandolin and Martin guitar... and I have done a neck reset on that Martin... That Martin was risky I know... I should have practiced on a cheaper guitar first.... but the action was .140 high.. it is now only its .87 ... Saved myself a ton of $$$$ and with the deer antler saddle this thing is now a flat picking machine .

Jerry, I use the table saw to cut an arced trough for the truss rod. On a guitar neck I double stick tape some long door shims to the flat face of the neck blank and I glue some half round dowel stock each side of the dado blades. The shims and neck ride over the dowel stock and the end result is an arced trough.
