It sucks because I still remember when Chippewa made REALLY good boots, great engineer boots too. One of the staples of Wisconsin footwear, you could just drive to a local shoe store or their outlet and buy a pair off the rack and they'd last. Now all we have left is thorogood 😢. I really hope they decide to stick around in Merrill and continue to employ assemblers in the area, there's not a lot of US made anything left in Wisconsin.

Boots like these are what make some boot companies deserve to go under. All synthetic that wears out in a year. Especially when they get in trouble for the misleading word-play. These should be sold in Wal-Mart for $50.

30 year ago I used to live in my Chippewas. I worked all day on the farm. I walked behind a plow. I balanced on poles in the hay mow. When I moved to Brooklyn, I walked for hours on the pavement. My feet felt great. Roomy yet always supported.

The more I look at this channel, the more I can see how different boots are made. The more I love my Redwings for the price and materials and where they're made, the Redwings are the choice.

Nice to see this video. Just got delivered last Thursday a pair of Chippewa 2.0 classic Pecan Brown boots with Vibram Stockbridge Gumlite sole. Paid $159 from Chippewa website delivered in four days. So far I really like them. I am a big Red Wing fan and went to the Red Wing store in Red Wing, Mn to get sized and fitted for Iron Rangers. They did not work for me for what I wanted them for. I live in the north, Alaska, and I need a boot that does not suck the heat from my feet. The leather foot bed, and Vibram mini lug was just to hard and slippery in this environment. They were so cold. If Red Wing still made the 953, I would have paid more for that. They discontinued them. So far the Chippewa is checking all the boxes, warm, flexible sole, good enough leather, fair traction on ice. Comfortable. The heel counter with its cheesecloth cover is suspect. Also had Golden Fox delivered from Amazon to compare. The Chippewa's are far superior, and the Golden Fox are going back. Thanks for the channel. Really enjoy it.

Should do a cut-apart on the (fairly) new Schott NYC service boots. Made in USA for $299. All eight reviewers gave it 5 stars except for a 4 1/2 that said the laces snapped pretty quickly. Nice looking boot, really close in appearance to Iron Rangers or even Viberg.

We were issued Chippewa uniform boots when I was a firefighter in the L.A. area back in the mid 90’s. They were just ok. The light tan leather lining would run through exposing the material beneath. They had a lug sole and a zipper that you’d lace in for a quick opening. I’m sure with your FF background you’re familiar with what I’m talking about. We also had Whites (not issued) for wild land firefighting.

I bought the modoc 6" in 2020 based on a comment you made, they are made in US and waterproof with insulation. Amazing boots for hard outdoor work. They were clearing out stock so only paid 200!

I was a bit stoked to see Chippewa return, but then I looked over their new inventory and was a bit disappointed that they don’t have any USA made options anymore. The prices are a bit high compared to Georgia boots, if you’re going foreign to save money then the consumer should actually save money lol.

the old Chippewa original line made such nice stuff. They used all kinds of waxed roughouts and gorgeous pull-up leathers. Experimented with lots of designs including engineers, moc toes, monkey boots, and the classic service boots. I also think their last had a classic look to it that I liked more than their competitors. So sad to see them go away.

Thanks for all you do. I was on the LAFD for 33 years and my favorite boots were Chippewa. Even when I had to purchase them. They fit my feet great, and lasted a long time with proper care. But I never cut them down the middle like you do. Your information is extremely valuable. Thanks again

I bought a pair of the Super DNA 9” steel toe logger boots about a month ago and they seem to be so far the best logger boot I’ve worn. Your feet would roast because of the 400 gram insulation inside but at least they keep your feet warm on a really cold day, plus they’re waterproof. And they fit me just fine for someone who typically takes a 14 4E in boot/shoe size and the 14 3E fits me perfectly. They still seem to be a more well put-together boot than the Keen Troy boots I’ve had for 6 months until the waterproofing membrane plus the leather have been compromised allowing them to absorb water like a sponge, even after letting them dry for days, plus adding foot powder inside them. Spending $300 after tax on the Chippewa Super DNA insulated steel toes are a better buy than the $270 Keen Troys in my opinion. Sometimes it never hurts to spend the extra money on a good pair of work boots, especially for working out in the single digit temps, and not much above it or well below it.

The Chippewa service boot (cordovan )was my first ever boot . I still have it 10 years now and still going strong I have never had any issues with it . I have red wings and thorogoods also now

I have a few pairs of the Chippewa heritage shoes, though I love the look I’ve got a wide foot and they are a bit narrow generally. The cordovan color service oxfords were my favorite but also the most narrow. Sadly they are too narrow to wear comfortably any more. Sad to see them leaning this way in the new boots.

Beckett Simenon. They are from Portugal. Mostly a dressier boot, but a good quality boot for not a lot. I have two pair. Comfortable, good components. The first pair I wore until they needed to be resoled. Got that done, ordered a different pair. Three years in and still wearing quite well.

I just got a pair of the 8" ones for $149. They looked so gnarly I had to get them.

I still use my Chippewa Arctic -50 I bought in the 1990s. I keep them in the box they came in and only take them out when I need to go to a mountain top radio site during the winter before the snow. Once they are covered in snow, then my white Micky boots are used.

I have a few Chippewas back from they were made here. Incredible boots. Quality went to the ground after Warren Buffet bought Chippewa.

Hi ya, very cool channel. I was an auto mechanic my entire life and some years back all I purchased were Chippewa’s. I felt they were the best without going into the upper tier handmade ( aka White’s & Nicks ), I’d sometimes have oil spills in my job which would just destroy the leathers so 5-600 dollar boots just would’ve been a waste since they are made to be rebuilt. The Chippewa’s I’d just throw away after perhaps 2 years of everyday wear. Now that I’m retired I recently purchased Nick’s urban loggers and they are indeed another level of boot compared to Chip’s. It saddens me to see they’ve gotten worse and are being made in China now as well. I do my best to make purchases which are going towards companies here in the states.

Also the Keen Cincinnati 90 degree heel boot is 195 dollars, made in India, welted moc toe and advertises tough leather and comfortable durability

It's nice to see some familiar boots, but I always remember by the end of the video that boots are mostly a sentimental thing. After years in the trades and aching legs, putting on boots reminds me of how uncomfortable they are next to even my 10 year old Adidas Boost shoes (I'm sure there's better tech out now). In the end it's just leather, cork, and maybe some thin foam or rubber, with a heel at that, not really any better than a pair of slippers. I'd probably prefer a zero drop steel toe boot if I have to be on site.

So. I bought the steel toe. Style: NC2081 recently... Before they stopped making them in the usa I had bought maybe 4-6 pairs over 15+ years... The USA version I usually would get them resoled or if the resole failed (due to bad cobblers) I would buy another pair. They would easily last over a year with daily shop use and look better when they age. I bought the new made in china version last week and when they showed up they feel completely different. Lighter and just softer(not a good thing). There is absolutely no shank support and you can easily bend in half so as a work boot they are not usable. I am returning them and unfortunately I need to find another boot to wear. Down goes another USA brand.

you should cut in half the Rossi Booma boot. They're Australian and look very similar to blundstones. I've heard they're pretty good quality.

I have a pair of LL bean boots made by Chipawa They call them Katahidan iron works. They are some of my favorites.

Thursday Boots are 100% the value king. Sad to see Chippewa fall off like this. The old Chippewa Heritage line was much better. The new Thursday Kingmaker Captain is stacked with improvements to the old Captains. It's funny seeing 1 company trying to make their boots more valuable every year and 1 company trying to make their boots cheaper every year.

I'm very sad. I bought the second tier " katadain " boot in 2012. $150.00 V 100 soul. Cheap leather, but made in USA. BUT for yrs I wore the SERVICE BOOT. My first pair were like 50 bucks! I was 8 or 9 years old. My last pair were bought in the 1990s for about 125 if I remember correctly. Very hard to break in but lasts very well. One pair I had saved my foot, accident with a axe in the woods. That is the pair with thick leather. They had the Indian logo on the side and on the outsole. Hard like a iron ranger. But the newer one wasn't half the boot even at nearly twice the price! I'm 60 years old and I switched to Red Wing. Very sad about Chippewa. But at least I still have my Arctic 50s. Warm dry feet in cold winters.

I'd like to see you do a pair of Timberland Pros. I know there not a heritage boot but I've been wearing them for years and I'm really curious how there made. They are comfortable right out of the box but they seem to break down after 8-10 months.

I bought the 8 inch classics because I wanted a taller steel toe boot that wasn't a moc toe or tactical boot. I also thought $150 was around where they should be. I got them over Ariats because I thought they looked cleaner. One thing about that external counter cover is that it's quite a bit higher than other boots, I couldn't find a way to walk without the boot bunching up and jamming into the back of my leg. Extremely uncomfortable boots. Also the toe bulges out in a weird way, it's not just bulbous. You can see where the boot is tight behind the toe, very strange looking.

I have a pair of these old Chippewas. Built like a tank, they are on their second or third soles, I can't remember. One of my life goals is to outlive them, but I kind of doubt that will happen.

it would be really cool if you could go there and save them with a new boot design. A lot of nice, hard working, an talented people would line up to knock it out.

Pleeeeeeeeze do the redwing roughneck. Ok. Moc toe, but so is your rock rooster. Wayyyyy better boot. Leather lasting board / insole/lasting board . Vibram lugged sole. Leather vamp lining. Briar upper. For this king of boot, at that price, the standard. Personally, I skipped the iron ranger to get the leather vamp lining. If it were done long ago, this boot would be the one you use to evaluate the others. Or, I’m wrong, like a bunch of others who have asked for this, once unique, now copied boot to be featured. Keep on keeping on.

I never thought I’d see the day- a pair of Chippewa’s being cheap garbage. These should be on the end cap at one of those mega grocery general stores. It was a privilege to work at a family owned store in the 90’s that sold every brand and type of boot. I absolutely hate having to buy shoes and boots now. Everything is junk/trash, and the brands that commanded big prices are still very expensive but the quality of work and materials is a joke. Danner and Chippewa seemed to last FOREVER. My father was a union electrician and got a couple years out of his Redwings at a minimum. I miss the days when made in the USA meant what it said, and you knew when you forked over big money for your boots you were actually getting what you paid for. Carolina and Georgia were low to mid tier boots back then, and they both made better boots than this junk. I can remember my boss would order factory second Carolina Gold’s (Carolinas Cadillac boot) and they were beautiful briar pit leather and glove leather lined, and would put anything you have cut in half to shame. To anyone who actually reads this, I cannot believe I am saying this having sold boots for the first several years of my adult life, but buying cheap boots and just disposing of them more often is definitely the way to go vs investing in quality boots and taking the time to clean and condition them. Sad times we are living in.

I still buy vintage Chippewas but nothing newer than this century.

Not pertinent to this video in particular, but have you examined any Loake boots yet? I have two pairs Thursday Captains which are great, but recently bought a pair of Loake Kirkbys. They are awesome, though perhaps they should be as they cost a little more than the Thursdays. Keen to know if you’re likely to review them in the near future. Thanks for the videos, kept me entertained for years.

Move to China is sad. I have a pair of Chippewa monkey/roofer/lace-to-toe boots that I love, even though the last is not good for my particular feet. Just can't bear to throw them out. Wish they made them in the USA with a last that fits my feet better.

I have a pair of Chippewa oxfords from 2016 with the Vibram vbar soles and they have been very durable. I’ve wanted to get a pair of their boots since these shoes have been so wonderful but not the 2.0 version.

Hey Weston! I think it is a bit overpriced, but so are Blundstones and other brands. I also think that it's unfair to compare these to the $270 Service Boot that they used to make. Those were trying to compete with RW Blacksmiths or 1,000 Mile Boots. This is more of like their affordable casual entry boot in a heritage style. Very similar to the Apache Lace Up Boot that sometimes came with a Vibram Gumlite outsole instead of the Lug one. I had an Apache Lace Up boot with the Gumlite outsole a few years ago and it was VERY comfortable, way more than the Service Boot. I think at the time I paid like $150 on Amazon. Could you do a review of this current Chippewa Classic 2.0 with the regular Gumlite outsole? And maybe compare it to other comfort style boots like Blundstone 550s and Thorogood Moc Toes? My big issue with all these companies is a lack of extra wide widths. I'm 4E; where the hell can I get boots?! Danner eliminated almost all of theirs except for the Acadia. Most companies have followed. I find it hard to believe there are not more people like me out there with extra wide feet. Forget about the imported crap like Dunham, poor quality aside, they have no idea what 4E is.

Of all my boots I actually prefer Chippewa’s foamy insole. Good balance between stability and comfort. The leather requires less maintenance, doesn’t crease much like my CXL 1000 Mile does.

Please review Thursday Casa-moto boot in gloss black. Most comfortable boot I've ever worn. The captains are not even comfortable compared to these boots. I have spoiled myself and can't wear other boots now.

I have a redwing boot, that looks similar on the outside but it's The Redwing Roughneck, basically their Redwing Christie Sole with a Vibram lug sole, I've been waiting for you to potentially do a review on it because they're the most comfortable boot I've ever owned and won't wear anything else even my Nike Monarchs which Ive worn really down, these have only gotten more comfortable like a glove

Looks like the Jim Green Baobab offers better construction for about the same money. Looks kinda similar as well and if its build the same as my Razorbacks, it will take a beating

The style of these at least, are what I've slowly turned my iron rangers into. Sad Chippewa can't come near a quality boot in this look. There really isn't a mid priced boot in this area.

More expensive than my Jim Green Razorbacks and I'm much happier to have the Jim Green. Not the sleek look you like either, but I've got wide and tall feet.

To be fair, they are not designed after the heritage boots, they are designed after my former favorite boots ever The Apache boots. I’m still on my last pair of those…but they are on borrowed time…😢
