We got our baby stitch from you and we found doing the regular touching really helped. We also found letting him bite us taught him We are not scared of him. First few times I flinched so he continued to bite. I finally forced myself to let him bite me ( doesn't hurt) and after 2 times he never bit me again. We also switched him from top access cage to a front access and he is so much better now. He knows when it's bath time and hides in my hair. It's pretty cute.

I just bought a tegu from this breeder, and my tegu is absolutely a dream. He is active, healthy and ate from my hand the first day. I’ve purchased various reptile from other breeders and I’ve been very disappointed so to receive such an amazing and healthy animal is amazing ☺️

That was an excellent demonstration and obviously works. I had to laugh when the second lizard was already somewhat desensitized by one session the day before. You do the same basic thing with any fearful animal, like he said, you are really just "de-sensitizing" the autonomic reactions that fear creates, whether fight, flight, or freeze.

We got Goo (high white purple) from you in 2020. He is almost two and very spoiled and very attached to me. He was however, a gift for my husband. He is currently walking around under our duvet on our bed. I can touch his mouth and even kiss his face. He is so awesome and a lot like a cold blooded puppy. This is to say, not all tegus are Goo, but they can be trained. He is working on “walking me” when he is leashed…LOL.

I definitely agree with u on the subject of when to begin working with your new animals, and most people do leave them to long and get to used to leaving them , I have in the past raised monitors from baby’s and soon as I got them I give them a day to settle then I start a routine , routine is key when taming animals especially big lizard species, lot of the time when u first get them they will bluff and hiss and puff maybe tail whip but only way past it is to gain trust by scooping up gently not from above as it always puts them on edge I always go from underneath showing your not scared and showing ur not a threat and repetition of your routine will slowly pay off has worked for me ,

Diva my Crime Scene baby is a work in progress. I handle her every chance I get she is in a slight brumation now. Down a day up a day down up. Growing like crazy and really would rather just be seen than touched. She huffs, arches hisses but once you get her out she relaxes. Still gaining confidence but a work in progress for sure. Diesel my 5 month old 3ft Plague baby is a Dream. Super confident. Good with kids, strangers, pets, free roams with me outside. He is a dream come true. I did the same exact with him as her. She is just taking longer. So what's my point? Keep up the work. They are so worth all the work. Don't get scared or complacent. Keep hands on and be calm like Joey says.... I love my Tegus from Rose City Reptiles TX......

My B&W is a little more than a year old and acts a bit like the B&W in your video she brumated for 5ish months last year, so the socializing has been a little slower. She's very chill when you interact with her in her enclosure, but making progress when socializing in that neutral space!

When I got my first Tegu he was almost a year old and was definitely skittish because of the new environment and he wasn't 100% hand tame and lunged at me a couple times lol. The way I trained him is I sat in his enclosure with him and always let him walk up to me. I gave him the respect of space if he didn't want to be close he would go to the other side of the enclosure, but he was always curious and ended up climbing on me. This obviously only worked because his enclosure is 8ft×4ft×6ft and I could comfortably sit inside of it, but it created a strong bond between us and now I can pick him up and hold him without him getting mad lol. It definitely takes time and patience but it makes it worth it to have such a tame and loving friend💚

I agree with what you said. I got a 6 month old tegu and it was way worse than the “aggressive” one was thrashing rushing me etc could feed him. 1 1/2 weeks later and he was so much calmer can hold him and pet him etc, what I would like to add is smaller enclosures help I feel like. Also try doing a session of a decent amount of time atleast two times a day. The second time feed them in a bowl and make it obvious you feed them. I also did a day where I didn’t interact at all but I didn’t feed him either so he’s like damn no interaction no food. My buddy made a dope hide out of a big pvc pipe and I make that like a tunnel and I stuff it every time I make the cage because he seems to enjoy digging it out again runs and does it right away. I’ll also sit in the room and watch videos do work etc.

Loralie is a blue that I got from you. While I was at work something happened and she dropped her tail. It was like starting from square one. She is ALMOST 1 ft long and 3.5 months now. After working with her slowly after the tail drop, she now lets me scratch under her chin and pet her. She will not let me pick her up but she will hold my ring finger, lie her body on my palm, and fall asleep on my thumb. I pretty sure I figured out what happened. She climbs on the mesh at the bottom of her cage and looks out the mesh screen window, her pointy tail must have slipped through and the cat grabbed it. She used to see the cats, run at them and tail whip the mesh. The cats would run. Loralie has not run at the black cats since the tail drop, instead she runs to her hide. I noticed she is not afraid of the pitbull, shepherd, or the grey cat. This is why I think it was one of the black cats that got her tail. Some good advice - DO NOT ALLOW OTHER PETS TO HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR TEGU WHILE YOUR AWAY, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOUR ENCLOSURE WILL HOLD UP! Maybe some videos on proper indoor enclosures and different types, or cheap indoor enclosure plans to purchase. I use a grow tent. It holds the temp and heat. Currently her area is 4 x 4 but soon I will lay it down so it will be 6 ft long x 4 ft wide and high. I have plastic shelf self stick wall paper to put on the inside silver reflective material (1 is palm trees, other is rock patterns).

What should I do if I can not find my tegu in it's outside enclosure? It has been around 45-50 at night here and 70-80 during the day here in AZ. The subtrate is quite deep around 12-14". Also my enclosure is around 10' x 7'. I assume it might be hiding. Been about a week. It is around 6 months old.

Hey! I have a big question. I've been seeing your videos since I've got my baby tegu about 2 years ago, and they are very helpful. I handled him from day one and he's got very tame inside. I also took him outside very early and he was super chill everytime. But once he got scared by my dog and ran away and started biting me. After that he immediately started sprinting as soon as he got out. I'm scared, since I can't hold him when he does his death roll etc even while having him in my arms. I got a harness with a leash and think it sits tight. For this year in summer I want to be prepared, but I'm still scared that he could run away again. If he starts sprinting on the leash, I could hold him, but would I get him inside? Or could I just stay still for 30 minutes witch him pulling and he would get calm? Could you recommend anything I could do?

Can you share some tips on getting the tegu out from the enclosure? I felt my baby tegu is act very different when he is inside the enclosure and outside in the tubs. I got my tegu 3 months ago from rosecity reptile it’s a blue albino tegu, and my strategy now is use food to seduce him out into the tub and feed him to full, then I can safely handle him. He gets scared when my hand is inside the enclosure.

@RoseCityReptilesTX
@RoseCityReptilesTX 2 жыл бұрын
That is a very common problem in fast growing hungry 1 year old tegus. Here is a video that might help with that. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7GTaLCF06eXg3k.html I recommend coming to the enclosure a few times a day and interacting with him. Gloves are okay to use if that gives you more confidence until you can build better trust. You can also try feeding early in the morning before he is out for some time. That could help with the cage aggression and him associating you with food.

@@ptrishagamin6398 I stopped Loralie from doing that. I would go in her enclosure at least twice a day and mess with stuff without feeding her, even if only a few minutes. The 3rd encounter was tong feeding. Don't pull away if he lunges, that is showing him it is his space and he can chase you out. Where thick gloves if you don't want a bite. But don't withdraw. I also make encounter 1 always no food, I eventually switched encounters 2 and 3 so she didn't know which one is feeding time - she figured that out when #3 was always feeding:) I cleaned out the cage, took out the food dish, messed with the piles she makes, and moved her ping pong balls. She would huff, lunge, tail whip, bite, I just acted like it didn't matter. She has stopped now. And this bad behavior started after the tail drop.
