Oh and for the hem, you can try tissue paper to stabilize it, then simply tear it away once done. You can also try a water soluble plastic-like material called Avalon, it disappears when it gets wet, and it's perfect for stabilizing knit hems 😄😄😄

Others have had the same problem with the hem as you! It’s the fabric not the tension. The only way around it is if you make a self band at the hem. It does make the look of the top really different but at least it looks really neat!

I have that fabric from spotlight! But in green, haha. I actually made something with it on my channel. It can be super hard to sew ribbed knits, I found that one from spotlight particularly hard. It stretches out when you sew it because of the pressure of the foot, so you get that stretched ruffle look. I've been told it helps if you stablise it first, with a starch spray or use tear away, or another method to stop it stretching while sewing. The top turned out very cute!!

Actually the number 4 is a stretch stitch, and the one you chose is kindof an overlocking stitch. :) and number 3 is mostly for parts that need extra stability like under your arm, where there is more wear and tear. :) Love the sweater by the way!

A great video Janelle. It’s so real regards how Home sewing really is. I’ve been sewing a long long time and no matter how much experience you have there’s always adjusting, correcting small mistakes and something not quite working out as you thought. A twin needle is a must for sewing knitted fabrics, which I only discovered recently 🤦‍♀️ love your turtle neck x

I love Princess Highway clothes too. Very modern vintage and I love your turtle neck! I teach sewing in Melbourne and run classes in stretch so I have some great tips for you. With the hem, iron on some hemming tape then fold over your hem before sewing. It keeps the hem from stretching out while sewing and washes out when you wash it. Also, a walking foot is great if you can get one. I just use a regular zig zag stitch set on 1.5 width 2.5 length for sewing and a stretch needle as I find the stretch stitch settings very hard to unpick if you have to.Sometimes you can adjust the presser foot tension too if it is stretching out too much.

That turned out great! Annika Victoria made a turtleneck video the other week and it inspired me to make one! I had the same kind of emotional rollercoaster ride that you did with it haha. I ended up having to use my 1950's sewing machine since it didnt skip any stitches and the foot was heavy enough to hold the fabric down! (The sewing machine itself weighs about 35 lbs haha) I'm so proud I managed to make one since I've never really used stretchy knits before. And now I want to make another one with a ruffled neck! It's so cute 💕

To avoid the hem curling up like that I like to do a straight stitch on the edge of the raw hem and then fold that in with the stitching as the guiding edge and then folding again to create a kind of “roll hem” but easier hahaha I think using tissue paper or even interfacing and then removing it could help!!

Maybe the pattern had the back in two pieces because cutting both front and back on the fold for the dress length would have significantly increased the yardage needed. I have always wondered why patterns don't suggest folding the fabric like bias tape (selvages to the centre) to get to folds to place the pattern on but maybe that wouldn't work for bigger sizes / narrower fabrics. Beautiful results though! I am building up the courage to start working with stretch fabrics as I also love to turtle neck tops xx

For a thinner neck ruffle option, you could have a wider band, then ... (struggling to explain this in writing) a wider band and a thinner band. Sew right sides together ruffle width away from the edge, then flip the thinner band to encase the s/a. You would have a 2 layer collar (3 layer at the s/a with a raw edge sticking up. Then lettuce trim the raw edge to create a the edge. I dont know if this would be the right aesthetic for you though. Another way would be to stretch the fabric at the stitch line. Gather it to make it the correct length again at that point, then it would have the gathered bottom look too possibly? Dunno I'd have to experiment with the concept but the first one is workable

I picked it up from a vintage store in Japan! Shall I make a tutorial on how to make one though?? (It’s one of my favourites and I really want more in other fabrics!) 😍

You're turtleneck turned out great. If you're going to work with knits some more, I would recommend Tilly and the Buttons book titled Stretch! amzn.to/2sVahoS
