Which roses are suitable for partial shade? This can be abit of a minefield with many variables to take into account.
Here’s a link to the royal horticultural society. I think a good website to get that information. If you then compare what they state and compare to specific rose breeders claims you’ll be in a better position to make your own minds up.
Many thanks for watching.

Hi Wendy, yes princess Anne does get many good right ups I have high hopes for her. But she will be going into a difficult shady spot so I hope we can get a half performance out of her but will see. Pomponella yes fantastic, even when it was 6” high she gave me some buds :) took a few months to start growing but now shooting up. I’m hoping she will climb up that fence with some careful training and pruning but will see. I honestly wasn’t expecting to see such duration out of her flowers. So happy with it.

Excellent video and very pertinent point raised here. It has been mentioned in few articles on roses that to grow good roses 4-8 hours of direct sunlight is required. It is also important that how much indirect sunlight rose is getting and at what intensity? Typically, on average 150000-160000 Lux or 14000-15000 foot-candles direct plus indirect light in a day is required for optimum photosynthesis and respiration. I have a meter having Ph, moisture and light measurements inbuilt and will take few readings this weekend to get the real picture on the issue. I have also recently planted Pomponella.

Hi my friend. Yes bringing a scientific equation of course ;) I think it’s difficult with so many different variables at play. Age of rose, climate, exposure, soil, I know it must be very difficult. I think all roses could probably grow and survive with just 4 hours direct sun, but the point in this video is at what cost in terms of performance. Some will perform much better than others. And whilst it’s difficult to judge where is the line drawn as to what’s acceptable I’ll give you an example. If a rose flowers more than once it’s classed as “repeat flowerer”. Even if it flowers only 1.25 times! and I think this is a little harsh. It’s possible some roses “suitable for partial shade” also slip into this area of greyness. I think a second opinion from a reputable source can’t do any harm. Hope your well my friend

@@Jay_Jay True, very difficult to know precisely, when so many variables and varieties in play. I feel fellow gardener or local rose society/association may guide us through this. Still situation would be more or less unique to everyone. However, experience of similarly placed fellow gardeners on growing the particular rose variety will help us more. Good day mate.

I have Desdemonia and it has been growing excellent so far in partial shade. Fair to say the roses that can do well in partial shade generally do better in full sun. But the standard imo depends on the area. The results will vary for those in Canada , USA and/or England area etc. Canada for instance has so many varying climates in it's provinces, and even in it's provinces, the weather varies vastly. AS for the standard, I suspect England is the primarily standard, and RHS tends to play conservative in it's reviews, and DA roses want to sell sell sell to those whom want to position their roses in full or partial sunlight. But, I would be more inclined to listen to DA roses because it is their flower, and they should have a better idea of it's habits after watching it grow for so long before releasing it to the general public. I will note though, Jay, there has been over the years, with DA, ratings of a rose being excellent, and over time it gets downgraded. Is this more to do with more data coming in from it's extensive growth from all over the world? And maybe it also has to do with better varities being release which has been the case in the later years....?

Hi zhrob and sorry for the delay in responding. I haven’t touched my channel for so long. I have decided that one of my Desdemona will get full sun this coming year and one will go in part shade. I haven’t decided where I will place them exactly as yet but I will trial them in pots for there positions this coming year. And your absolutely right when it comes to position. It’s very easy to say the performance of this or that rose but without having a clue about it’s position/how much sun it gets and at what times of day it can be very different. Sorry for the delay once again but I’m trying now desperately to catch up :) thanks mate

Hi Jay I have Olivia, wild Eve, Our Beth and Macmillan nurse in a bed that has a large tree behind and the house to the east. At the June equinox it receives about 7 hours of afternoon sun much less the rest of the year. All are healthy and floriferous only downside I notice is that the canes definitely do lean/stretch towards the light. Interesting about Desdemona, it's my first year growing her she is in a bed that gets morning sun till 12 then shaded by the fence in the afternoon and seems to be loving it🙂

Hi roontunes good to hear from you and your garden is doing so well. My garden im really pleased with. I’ve done the opposite of your kind self and not fed my roses just as an experiment. Only putting down a 4-5” layer of plant based organic mulch in April. So far I’m over the moon. My boscobels are now 5ft tall and teeming with buds, a few are in flower. That entire front bed by the Lane is looking the best it ever has by far. Even my Eustacia vyes that done so poorly last year are singing a very fine tune indeed and huge with it. And that entire front bed has had zero feed and believe or not zero water from me this year. But those roses are seeing there 3rd and 4th summer. The no feed has backfired a little with some of my potted roses and one or two of my newer roses. I buckled and gave them some feed more recently after it became apparent they were lacking. My mums garden I’m absolutely over the moon with. Flying Fantastically well. This year I plan to mulch in autumn maybe late sept and again in late March as I suspect the mulch takes time to fully weave it’s magic into the soil and a little longer than I suspected. My mums “perhaps” proof of that as it really is flying. And I haven’t fed it since I created it. Although it has had a few drenchings this past month when I’ve been there. Pomponella is doing very well. Over a hundred buds easy but one of the few roses in my garden not yet to flower. And more strong growth coming up. Sweet honey again not yet in flower but must be 200 buds. Madame Alfred was first to flower and still singing. Looking around I think 99 percent of my roses are in flower apart from the ones mentioned and some are in full flush as I type this. So overall very very happy indeed. But next year I will put mulch down twice. Autumn and spring and I’m confident they will perform even better. Good to hear from you my friend and I do hope your garden continues to do well this summer.

I was looking at Princess Anne as a possible buy after recommendations for its prolific flowering but (a) I have too many tall DA rose (b) I have too many pink roses (c) and although PA looks attractive she has no fragrance, so I'm planning to get some fragrant non-pink bare root floribundas instead. Part of my pink excess is due to my having bought 2 potted Ancient Mariners this summer after having been so impressed with the one I already had. This links to your partial shade issue because I planted one where it gets sun from morning to late afternoon and the other only gets sun from about midday onwards. They are both healthy, but the one that gets most sun is unsurprisingly flowering more and has about 8-9 big blooms now whereas the other is bare at the moment. Last year's Desdemona bare root is in a large pot is about 20 feet from the back west wall of our bungalow and so largely shaded from the morning sun by the house and partially shaded later on by a walnut tree to the south, and it has performed brilliantly in its first summer and still has a good number of flowers (about 2 dozen today with new buds appearing). I was very tempted to buy another bare root Desdemona this year - I find the luminous white flowers against the dark foliage almost mesmerising. Next to Desdemona, also in large pots, so in the same partial shade bracket, I have Lady of Shalott, Queen of Sweden and Emily Bronte which suffer progressively more from the walnut tree's shading in that order, and whether it is chance or sun they are progressively less flower-bearing in that order too. However the last two are also the tallest - is that because they are seeking the sun? My QoS (another of last year's bare roots) is now about 6 foot tall and seems to be trying to become a vertical climber, and she has at last started flowering again, but the flowers are mostly right at the top of the very upright rigid canes.

Thanks very much for your comment nik, That is interesting what you say. For me that front flower bed area by the tree in the front garden it gets interrupted sun. In June I guesstimate it gets sun from around 6 until 9 am. Then it gets blocked by the tree and hedge until 11 maybe 12 midday and then sees sun until 4pm when it disappears past the house. This is where PA im hoping to plant. And where Elizabeth didn’t appear to be so happy. A shame because just a short distance to the driveway gets far more sun. The timeless collection in that row are doing well with the exception of timeless cream. That rose has grown well but flowered far less than the others. In the short time I’ve had Emily she has flowered very well for me by the front door but again very close to this area but gets better sun and mainly uninterrupted. Very interesting what you say about Desdemona, I’d love to plant her in place of timeless cream. Or somewhere in the back garden. I know I’m gonna have a jiggle around this coming winter with my potted roses. Thanks nik that’s great

@@Jay_Jay I was going to ask you about Elizabeth. I like her in the DA photos. What was your opinion of her colour/fragrance/flower shape and abundance when she was doing well for you - and how pink is she? I quite fancy marking the Queen's passing with one of the roses bearing her name. I'm having a real mental tussle about what to treat myself to this autumn. I think your Sweet Honey convinced me despite the lack of fragrance. I'm looking at jparkers since their roses are so cheap. Their Fragrant Delight and Margaret Merril are certs too.Their bargain offers on twos and threes of the same variety is also tempting for making an impact with a group - bringing the price down to under a fiver a rose. When you compare those prices with a DA rose ... it makes you think. I'm looking for a deep yellow that stays yellow too - Korresia? Ab Fab? Chinatown? And a red - Lovestruck? Lili Marlene? Stromboli? Any comments on any of those? By the way, I just had a strange experience. I was gently pushing aside a fairly thick green stem of my Golden Wedding back to show my wife and it just snapped - 6 inches or so. She gently pushed back another stem and that too snapped. I've never had that happen before - a very brittle rose.

@@nikkonch hi, Elizabeth for me is a rose with personality. When she was in that sunnier position she was brilliant. Lots of strong growth and always in flower. The sort of flushes that just blend into each other. She will be in flower and in bud with new growth always on the way all at the same time. For first year I thought she done very well. The pink I can only describe as an apple blossom but to have this look in summer is lovely. It does fade to a white in bright sun but not as quickly as I suspected. And with new flowers always on the go that fresh blossom look is always there. Fragrance I’ve said before is moody. 80 percent of the time I’d put my nose to her flowers and get no fragrance. 10 percent of the time perhaps a light fragrance and just when I think it’s a non fragrant rose I put my nose to her and get knocked off my feet with a powerful scent. Kinda a nice surprise package as I walk around my garden. She’s very bushy in growth habit. Could probably do with a thinning out more than I suspected. One of mine did get blackspot at one time of year but appears to have settled now since I thinned her out. A nice rose but I “suspect” she doesn’t like partial shade too much. Ab Fab is a rose that I got for my mums garden after I saw her planted in my garden. Great repeat flower. Nice growth. Always fragrant. The yellow does fade but not nearly as much as Arthur bell nor poets wife. I’m seeing her ability to flower aswell as fragrance as her party piece. Currently mine has perhaps 6 flowers mid October. Only planted recently aswell, as yet zero blackspot here. Greasy value the place you mention, Gav gets his from there and he’s very happy. I think his sweet honey is perhaps a year or two behind mine but before you know it they will be parallel and a great saving. Best of luck
