In this video, I walk you through the process of assembling and installing Ross Rounds on bee hives, followed by how to harvest and finish the packages.
Including how to make chunk honey by pouring real raw honey around chunks of comb.
Have questions? Please post them in the comments section, or follow this link: www.fredsfinefowl.com/thewayto...
Those excellent hive tools at 15:17 were from @TheHoneystead and I appreciate them :)

I’m planning retirement in Misamis Occidental, Philippines. I need bees as pollinators for the various fruits and peanuts. The coconut harvest can be increased 40% with bees on property and in the grove. What hive design did you choose and are you keeping Apis Cerana bees? My staff are as uninformed as can be but work hard. I will try the comfort hive for its simplicity, the Japanese style pile hive or a top bar design would be my next choice. Thanks.

@@spudgn Out of curiosity (and because I'm looking to start beekeeping soon in a tropical region), have you decided on a hive? And did you rule out Langstroth hives?
@spudgn
@spudgn Жыл бұрын
Langstroth is a bit large for Apis Cerana. I think a 12x12x 10-12 inch size is about right. This fits the dimensions of the Comfort hive or the Japanese pile hive size. Because my neighbors will be simple folks, I’d like to keep the hive design as simple as possible and something that my neighbors could replicate easily. If we all have similar dimensions and designs, sharing resources or duplication / splits can be done with less hassle. Apis Mellifera colonies are in the Philippines and are kept. Apis Dorsata is a much larger honey been and is not easily kept and not in boxes. The Apis Cerana is what I think are seen as wild colonies. The meliponea or stingless bees are much smaller and use a different hive altogether.

FRED! This channel should win an award for the value of education you so kindly share with us for nothing but our thanks! Not even ads enabled on this video. You are doing it for the love of helping the bees and us and you are inspiring thousands of us! Please share as much extreme cold methods with us this year if you can. I have just started this year with one hive and a free swarm that turned up at my yard - initially I thought it was my queen, but nope it was an external swarm ;). I am a Brit from E.Anglia and I now have a permaculture homestead 62 deg North next to Russia in the Eastern Lake lands of Finland. Winters are cold. But the bee hives are thick and the lovely kind Finnish bee keeper I got my bees for is very much a man who works with the nature of bees. When I got the hive he gave me 6 hours of one on one Q&A time and I used the knowledge I had from watching you to br able to ask the right questions ;) My dream is to set up a bee "sauna" in my garden as per Dr Leo Sharashkin. The smell of my hives is so fantastic it really makes me so relaxed and I think if my hubby makes this for me I will want to sleep in there all night ,) Only 2 months in after buying my bees and the difference in my strawberry and Raspberry harvest is incredible. My fruit growing is not professional, but this year thanks to chicken/turkey manure and the pest control services of baby turkeys my fruit yields are off the charts. I would be happy for my bees to have all the honey if they needed it. Because just in pollination on my 2ha land here they are worth their weight in gold ;) Thanks for the amazing work you do. I believe good deeds are rewarded and may you always bee Blessed,!

Very interesting as I have never heard of Ross Rounds before. I find the whole idea of cut honey, and now also Ross Rounds, very appealing even if I am not keen on chewing on the wax myself. Presenting honey in this way is of course more visually pleasing, and as pure a product as can be(e), so I am sure it will sell quickly at markets, fairs, or in gastro shops and such. There is of course a bit of extra work to produce these rounds, but on the other hand no extraction equipment, or additional process is required, so from that perspective it might actually not end up being more labour intensive at all. Thanks for sharing.

Yet another fantastic video! I love comb honey and think it tastes the best. My mom used to do comb honey. All the parts were made from wood, they were square, some kind of thin wood wrapped into square shape, then loaded into medium sized frames then into medium langstroth hive body. I don't recall if you could put foundation in them. She would give them as gifts, and they were greatly appreciated.

I like both ross rounds and hogg halves, it give buyers options aside from the 4 jar sizes and the 1/4 & 1/3 gallon jug. The angled labels for the halves are limited, but you can find others. The ability to see the honey and the comb on all sizes is unique. The ross rounds are nice and if you’re having issues with the label sticking to itself, use a small piece of clear double tape between label ends. Currently Michigan has a cottage food law that works, it limits sales and what can be done, but there are legal loopholes for that.

Great video as always! My comment today is not about honey or comb. It's about bees in general. I want you to know that watching your videos had changed my thinking about bees completely. I'll tell you how. I had a bee in my house yesterday. Before watching your videos I would have simply killed that bee without thinking one thought about it. But yesterday, I felt bad about killing it. It was simply trying to get some sweet juices from the pineapple I was cutting, to take back to the hive. So I tried to coax it out of the house but it didn't work. And since I'm allergic, I couldn't just let it stay inside, or tell other he's where to get the set pineapple juice. So, I still had to kill it. It's just the thought process during and after killing it that was completely different than my way of thinking before. Thanks for sharing your videos and knowledge. I'll keep watching!

Always love your videos and the vast knowledge you share with us... invaluable! Just a thought, I noticed you use the hive tool to pry on the side where there is no brown plastic circle to protect the comb. Maybe you can protect the round if you pry between frames on the dude opposite of covered rounds facing you? And, you poured unfiltered honey in your chunk comb. Do you normally filter your honey for bottling without comb?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
All of my honey is unfiltered, so that's a yes. I actually didn't need the hive tool to pull the frames apart... the next time, I'll use my hands, after the first frame is removed, the others pull apart easily. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Fred, I've found you can use starter strips in Ross Rounds. The bees draw them out just fine You don't have the thicker wax foundation running through the whole Round, which makes a nicer eating experience. As an added bonus, you save some $'s since I cut the foundation you use into 3 or 4 strips.

For some reason, I thought that I had already subscribed, whelp did it again. That being said, thank you for this comprehensive video. Unfortunately, my kit that I bought recently was more expensive, but what isn't 2 years later? And they didn't come with 2 clears... but going forward, that will be the plan. I was told from the local supply store that I could sell them for $20 ... hopefully so. I intend to put this on my strong 3 deep hive although I have apimaye hives, so I have no inner cover. Maybe put a shallow or medium super on top with drawn comb? Or would they just pass these to go up top?
@FrederickDunn

Hi Nathan, There is a bracket being sold by Ceracell that holds these in pairs so you can put them in a deep. What I'm trying this year will be to put them in my nucleus hives on the third level (top) and center them. I think this is going to be a great way to use my resource hives for comb honey. They have proven to be fast comb builders and honey producers, so I think it's going to work well. The problem is sourcing that product here in the U.S. Blythwood Bee Co. was carrying them, not sure now. Thanks for subbing "again" ! btw, demand for cut-comb is high, so I think that's not a bad price these days.

Nice video! Im looking to do this next year. Since the bees didn't fill the outer rounds. IYO, would it be worth it to rotate the rounds or would that be too much of a hassle?

If it were earlier in the year, that could be easily done and I think would work fine. This late in the year, not worth it for me.

Hi Mr Dunn, Have you ever tried the jar method? My daughter and I were thinking of trying that one, with the mason jars on top for them to build comb and fill with honey... So I was wondering your thoughts on that? We love your channel :) thanks for your time :)
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have, it's just harder to access the honeycomb and get what you want. But that does work, you have to make your own shim to put them on :)

Have been following for a while now and as and old-time beekeeper was wondering if the outer Ross round frames could be replaced to the middle of the super in hopes they could be finished off? Tried the square boxes as mentioned below (that's going back a few years for me) but suspect the hives were not strong enough. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into these videos. Cheers from New Zealand.

Yes, you can definitely rotate them to the center where it's warmer and the bees work that area first. I wish you all the best.

Well here we go again another very interesting video . Let me tell you help me Jesus to be watching and not having a full mouth of water I almost swallowed my tongue that's how hungry I fell , beautiful color of a honey. Insight in the jar with the wax . Your brain is definitely got exploded with happiness thank you for that , almost impossible to be sitting and watching and not making yourself hungry from all of that beauty. I definitely saw it first time Captain honey like that and amazing. Work that those hard-working bees done , usually you see when they slice little squares of Captain honey weed wax and put them in the plastic bag I think it didn't look that nice like the circle ones. Something new for us to tell and show the kids I'm sure this work is not new but for our family interesting to see that thank you for that God bless stay happy be healthy peace. I will be very happy to buy honey like that I wish I was leaving somewhere close to you guys .🌻🥀🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

I love Fred videos for real. However, in my country what we do in the season, we go to any carpenter or we can do it on our self, we make round or square frames and fit them in out ordinary langstroth frames and put them in the hive, either 10, 8 or even 6 frames. and we sometimes put bees packages and it'll collect as much as we need of honey. that's I believe is cheaper and won't cost that much of money. It's just my point of view no more 😊

Would the insulated cover also have a benefit in the summer keeping the hive cool?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
It does help, but the bees are lower down in the hive during summer, while in winter, they end up at the top eventually and that top insulation becomes more valuable.

It's beautiful, but I want to know how it tastes. Will you be offering it on line or specific stores?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
It tastes great, but we don't do anything but direct sales and of course as gifts to friends. I think my wife gives away more than she sells and ends up with a waiting list. We don't ship or work through any stores.

Not trying to persuade anyone as to how they collect comb. Cutting your own comb from foundation-less frames is definitely the least expensive for the beekeeper :)

Fred, do you have a video of how you prepare your hives for the Ross rounds… I.e. spring management for the flow"
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 2 жыл бұрын
The only preparation for me, is to notice a hive that is topping off their honey and put that shallow Ross-Round right on top before they complete their current top super. It's really that simple.

After the first season, how clean do you need to get the plastic frames? My bees seem to deposit a lot of propolis around the edges of the white rings. Glenn
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
You can heat them up and wipe them clean. Propolis is antibacterial, so that's fine if it doesn't look too bad.

Fred would it help to swap the cassettes and move the outside ones to the centre to get them to be all filled?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea, but not very practical. They will fill the outer cassettes just fine. I took them out prematurely with this super as I was trying to get the video out. :) The others that were left on another week or so filled out perfectly.

Nice vid Fred! How do you get your honey down to 15% humidity and how long does that take?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
Just came out that way. While I'm drawing off from the Flow-Supers I test the water percentages and mark the lids. In other supers on the same day, it was up as high as 18%.

Frederick Dunn I was listening to Bob Beinne and he was saying how honey could spoil also at 18 % and ironically some local honey that I purchased was starting to ferment.

question could you put the unfinished rounds in an extractor spin the honey out and use the rounds with the wax the next year to speed up the process
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
You "could" do that, but they build them out so fast that it really isn't necessary to use the pre-drawn or started foundation, but thanks for sharing your thoughts on that.

Sorry, I know this is a dumb question but can someone please explain to me, what's the difference between 'normal honey' and these ones? Do they just look different? And what honey I should choose the next time I want some honey?
