Rossini wrote these six sonatas for strings - two violins, cello and double-bass - at the precocious age of twelve. He was scathing about them in later life, even after transcribing them for string quartet - a form in which they have retained popularity and a place in the record catalogue - but they reveal in more than embryonic form his talent for virtuosic writing and his infallible ear for a fine tune, no less than Mendelssohn’s string symphonies do at a similar age: both composers show a sophisticated fertility of invention beyond that of Mozart at the same age. Now these sonatas take on new colours, transcribed for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon, and dispatched with élan by the wind principals of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

I've said virtually the same all of my classical life 20-83...one can't listen to Rossini and not feel happy. (Said the same about Louis Armstrong (Satchmo), Ella Fitzgerald, Victor Borge, Red Skelton)

@@rsjmd It was a pleasure to read your reply. Were you a musician and if so what instrument did you play? I agree they did not call Louis Armstrong the Great Satchmo for no reason! He was the embodiment of simple joy and happiness though I don't imagine his life would have been easy in those days. HAve a great day!

Wunderschöne und erfreuliche Interpretation dieser sechs perfekt komponierten und fein arrangierten Sonaten im veränderlichen Tempo mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen vierer genialen Blasinstrumente. Faszinierend vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

One of our proverbs reads ," When you decide to taste something for the first time, begin it with the best". I have never listened to the music of Rossini. This music is s fantastic but I have no idea whether it was the best from this maestro. Gracias.

Listen to some of his operas. They are fantastic. Fun and lovely music, fantastic arias and ouvertures. He composed many. The barber of Seville, William Tell, La Cenerentola, Semiramide, La gazza ladra, L'Italiana in Algeri, Le comte Ory and many others (36).

Rossini is most famous for his operas. Even the overtures to his operas are so famous and beautiful, there are albums which consist of only Rossini overtures. Perhaps, before you pick one opera to listen to, you might find one of those collections of overtures.

@@MsLeenite It"s a great idea to begin with his ouvertures. His ouvertures are a great way to listen some of Rossini's great music. William Tell and Gazza ladra are my favorites, all others are not bad too.

A superb job in transcribing this music - I haven't heard original the string quartet but doubt that I'll like it as much, so original does the music sound, as if written just for winds. A big thank you from Sakuntala Basu

It was written for winds - c1804 so early and primitive winds, including the dreaded natural horn.
