Good quesion, I have Hex-V2 and it shows ok, interface found etc. But when plugged in to vehicle the licence status goes to invalid / Unauthorised

I'd 110% confirm that there are available VINs available if it's the 3-VIN license. If yours is 3/3 used, I think you have to upgrade to the 10-VIN license. Plus there's a $99 re-registration charge... just buy a new one

Infuriating that you need to provide any date at all to use something you have paid for. Registration offers zero benefits to the user and seems to serve no reasonable purpose.

I found this Hex-V2 on AliExpress for 69 bucks but after seeing this video I wonder if AliExpress has found a way to make it work without registration?!

No, once a VIN is registered, it can not be removed. But VCDS does allow some limited functions on a car without having to register the VIN. Details here: forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/8869/
