This song harbours religious tension and separatist sentiments being from Scotland myself. Whether I believe in the movement or not, this is our historical legacy and a reminder of that time. It comes in handy when you need to ground yourself within the political world and it helps you understand why things remain so bitter - we can hold a grudge - must be in our DNA from the time we were living in clans. Scotland and Northern Ireland is the only place we have on-going religious bigotry and violence on an organised level in the western world, its kind of embarrassing, if you remember the origins of America was based on religious tolerance, unfortunately, 400 years later we still see the effects of the Reformation and the times that followed with King Billy. Much of our Catholic population lives in poverty to this day, both sides are living in poverty of course but its more prevalent among the former. Anyway, you are very courageous, Americans protect the free world and that means me too. Thanks for your input on the song. Its really interesting you said that. Gives a neutral glimpse at how this song impacts people. Take care buddy.

@@RenaissanceMan29 Americans protect the free world by invading countries that happen to have oil and don't do what the US says. If the US gov't really wanted to put an end to dictatorship, then they wouldn't have allied themselves with Saudi Arabia, a country with a government which only recently was so generous as to allow women to drive cars. In 1956 MI6 and the CIA overthrew the democratic Iranian gov't to replace it with a monarchy. The PM Muhammad Mosaddegh was a champion of liberal democracy but he wanted to nationalise BP Oil in Iran, so democracy in Iran ended for good. (The US gov't literally admitted to doing this in 2013 by the way). This is only one of a slew of coups and armed invasions of sovereign democratic countries that the US participated in. If you want to see it happening again look at the USA, we are fractioned beyond repair. This is not a Rebel song in fact the poem could easily have been titled " The Rant Against The Cause !" Robert Burns is telling the Jacobites to listen to him .Their FAULTS he will proclaim and their doctrines he felt to BLAME . Burns also thought the Jacobites should have made the changes by the LAW . He goes on to say he thought the Jacobites should have left the State alone with their schemes and plots ..He also wonders why the Jacobites cause is seen as HEROIC. He didn't see it this way. He seems to be writing about his total disgust with the Jacobian cause and every thing they stood for. Above is a small amount of what all he did say .So please read the poem first then listen to the song . I think you will agree ,

@NuclearHaggis8 жыл бұрын
That's Celtic obscurantism at its its finest. The term "Celtic" applies to genetic markers that half of Europe share. Just say that highland Scots, and the Irish are both descended from the same group of Gaels/Scotti. Just leave the silly Celtic pish out. Lowland Scots are also decened from the Gaels/Scotti by the way. How do you think Scotland came to be? The Gaels/Scotti, and the Picts conquered the Angles, Saxons, Friesian's, and the Brythonic settlers. All these groups came together to create lowland Scots. South-Western Lowlander's, and folk from Fife even spoke Gaelic for centuries.
@robbielobster32128 жыл бұрын
Okay, just stop for a second. The Kingdom of Scotland was founded by Cinaed Mac Ailpin, former King of Dal Riada and King of the Picts. he united the two into the Kingdom of Alba and over the centuries the two cultures merged into Scots' Gaelic "Brythonic Settlers" First off, the Brythonics had settled in the land they would call "Alt Cluit" and "Gododdin" before the Gaels had settled Dal Riada. The Picts at that point were just doing their own thing and infighting. The Brythonic kingdoms were destroyed in the region by the Kingdom of Northumbria, which in turn was destroyed by a man who I can't remember the name of whilst one of his relatives, Ivar the Boneless, fell upon the Kingdom of Alt Cluit that revolted from Northumbria (Basically the region that was Carrick, Strathclyde and Galloway), Ivar also conquered the Kingdom of Dal Riada and set up shop there. Eventually, Scottish culture came to those regions over time and FINALLY the norse conquered regions were absorbed into Scotland however by that point we'd lost Carlisle and England had conquered over half of Ireland and Wales. I skipped out a hell of a lot of history but you get the gist. The Gaelic language was predominant in the Lowlands until 1400 I believe, where the language lost a lot of it's following and was eventually phased out in law and administration by 1450.

***** What? Alba (Gaels and Picts) conquered Strathclyde (Brythonic settlers) and Northumbria ( Angle, Saxon, and Fresian settlers). All three became Scotland. Remember it was not the people but the lords and ladies that cleared the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. That is why Scotland now has land owned by foriegners in tax havens.....started by Norman Robber knights stolen from the indiginous people of Scotland...Robert De Bruc......dont make me laugh !

I actually randomly turned on my turntable on the Thursday of the Referendum and I had Live At The Lyceum on from a few weeks before, and it was at this very song. Everyone thought it was very apropos. I'm in America for reference, and argued with the other local ancestrally scots-irish folk about how we'd all vote if we were there.
@georgeparkins7779 жыл бұрын
I'd think of all the good reasons to vote no, then I'd think that I have seen Culloden with my own eyes, and the feeling of death that hangs over the place, and I'd maybe flip a coin.

A couple of my ancestors were transported to the American colonies for being Jacobites. One of my 2nd great grandmothers was a Stewart, and I have autosomal dna matches to the royal House of Stewart. Not that that makes me anything great, but it's cool anyway.

this should hae been oor national anthem frae the start ,,, A song that protests bitterly about the Union of Scotland and England in 1707. Fareweel to a' our Scottish fame, Fareweel our ancient glory Fareweel ev'n to the Scottish name, Sae famed in martial story Now Sark rins over Solway sands An Tweed rins to the ocean To mark where England's province stands - Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation! What force or guile could not subdue Through many warlike ages Is wrought now by a coward few For hireling traitor's wages The English steel we could disdain Secure in valour's station But English gold has been our bane - Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation! O would, or I had seen the day That Treason thus could sell us, My auld grey head had lien in clay Wi Bruce and loyal Wallace! But pith and power, till my last hour I'll mak this declaration We're bought and sold for English gold - Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation! ^ ^ ^ should have been oor national anthem from the start ^ ^ ^

I was thinking of Soutie or Sout Piel, which refers to the idea that British South Africans are associated with both Britain & South Africa & are therefore affected by the ocean in the middle (I won't translate it because it's a wee bit rude, but it's actually very similar to the English anyway). I don't really know if it's in common currency these days.

@ogreoh "James II strived for a kingdom with the peace to allow religions to develop" Actually James oppressed the Presbyterians in Scotland whilst his brother was on the throne and continued to do so whilst in office. He was eventually persuaded to moderate slightly but the idea that he wanted complete toleration for everyone is bunkum!

I could care less if it's pro Jacobite or anti Jacobite. This is a cool song. Thankfully my ancestors migrated to Virginia in the 1600's, and missed the whole shit show.
@huxleyleodwalding57512 жыл бұрын
The song is anti-war. The original version was very anti-jacobite and pro-crown but it got adapted by Robert Burns in the 18th century to be more generally anti-war. If you read the lyrics it's pretty clear, the singing is hard to parse but still amazing. This song kicks arse and disdains war.

So what do you suggest? A separate Parliament for London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast (oh, yeah, they already have one, don't they?) - and then Birmingham, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Carlisle, Manchester, Leeds, etc.? What difference does it make when, in a few years, we'll all be part of the European Superstate, ruled from Brussels?
