We anchor Cedar fence posts into the ground in a way that eliminates wood-to-ground contact. That's where a Cedar fence post usually fails- at the ground line.

THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO! Ingenious! I looked at the OZ Post spike products, but I think your method is more secure from sheer angular force. Especially if its a corner or gate post. Your method holds an entire foot inside the wood, kind of creating a structural bone inside the fleshy wood. The OZ Post spikes only hold the bottom 3 or 4 inches of the post, kind of like a small steel shoe. Look around at houses that are 50 or 60 years old and what fences do you see that are still up? Chain link fences with galvanized posts in concrete. What you did was mix the 2 ideas together. Simply genius! You could market and sell these. Too bad it might not sell well since people are so cheap when making or paying for a fence.

I think many people think they'll only be living in their current house for a few years and if the fence falls down, it will be the next owner's problem.

I have thought of something like this for years. Never pursued it because of all the unnecessary work involved (jig build, drilling etc). Treated wood, burned a little with some used motor oil, tar, an 8 inch dia. hole (your holes are huge) and your good for 50+ years All in all nice job and nice jig.

Check out my fence videos. You don't actually have to do it this way although this is one way to do it. I just put 2 and 3/8 galvanized poles in the ground and then I used pressure treated lumber and built boxes around them. They last incredibly long. And if you paint them they will last that much longer. A lot of people don't like the look of pressure-treated lumber that's why I suggest painting them with a solid stain or a textured stain. I don't think you're going to come up with a wooden fence design that can Outlast this, I've never seen it. That way the only thing in the ground is metal and the only thing above ground is wood. In essence the wooden part is just hanging in the air

I'm a contractor in NY, inexpensive treated fence posts will last 15-20yrs no problem.(without maintenance) 99% of the time they outlast the fence, especially when there's a lack of maintenance. cool idea though and I love the ingenuity of the jig.

Buddy was right in the fact that you should have pulled the bit out every so often and clear the shavings out of the hole to prevent the bit from burning and possibly losing the temper in the bit.That being said I like your idea as after the first and last post are set, you can easily tweak the position of the posts as they're being set. Think that I'll try it this summer. I also like the thought that you put into making your jig.Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the compliment. That bit is fine. That wood was green, it's moisture that smokes out of the wood, it's not burning. I'm still using it after having drilled hundreds of holes. I get it sharpened at a lawnmower shop. I also now use a right angle drill: a Timberwolf. It's a lot stronger

Had a helluva time getting the auger bit,still waiting for it from Amazon. I could only get 1 5/8'' galvanized pipe from a fencing supplier. It came in 21" length but they cut it to 30'' for me but should just fit the 1 3/4" hole with a little play.. Couldn't tell what gauge pipe that you were using but it sounded like schedule 40 [which is what I used] when you hit it. My question to you : Have you used this method on a 6x6 pwf gate post? Thanks again for sharing your method ....should be easy to line the posts up.

Wood rots, and metal rusts. Either way the posts will have only so much life span. It's better to set anchor braces in the concrete and bolt in the posts so that you can change them out in the future. Just my opinion.

Easy replacement of the posts is one of the key advantages. The problem would be trying to hit the holes in the metal tubing while drilling the bolt holes in the replacement posts because you apparently freehanded the holes in the original posts (2:00 +/-). If you used a jig to drill all those bolt holes at reasonably precise and consistent locations (and kept the jig, of course -- or at least a drawing), that would save a lot of time and frustration on "replacement day." Very good job overall!

Check out my fence construction. This is the exact same thing I've done. It's just a different construction method. I put galvanized Post in the ground and then I just made boxes out of two by sixes and two by fours. Essentially just building a framed box around the galvanized pole. He's just drilling a post out and sliding a pole over it. Pretty much the same thing this is the best way you can build a fence. However the video does suck

@@fasoldtgardens9585 you can actually just use teks screws instead of using a Bolt & Nut. They grab very well. And that way you have a flush surface you don't have to worry about a bolt in the way when you're mounting rails and fence boards.

I would think 2" sch. 40 pvc set 1- 1 1/2 ft in the post would be secure as well as got proof. Idk I think it would be just as solid with the concrete shoved in the tubing when set. I think I'll try that instead of metal. I like the idea of a above ground raised post.

I have an old chain link fence -- posts are already in concrete. I want to do something like this an re-use the posts already set in concrete with my new wooden fence. (discarding the chainlink fence of course). I looked at this drill setup as something I wanted to do -- but decided the bit would cost too much. So I have decided to use the table saw and cut a groove out of the 4x4 post. This would make a u-shaped channel. Then I would bolt it the way you did to the metal post. Then covering the open side with a trim board. BTW -- the posts in the concrete are probably 20 or 30 years old with little to no rust...

Like what you did here and the cool rig you set up... only thing I would do differently - instead of the tubing you used, which looked like chain link fencing, I would use sch #40 galvanized... only difference between the two is it will take even longer for the metal to have any sort of rust issues, call me lazy if you must. (also, some tubing is only galvanized on the outside, prefer metal galvanized inside and out) Good job.

SOLUTION: Coat the bottom of the fence post with hot roofing tar like they did 100+ years ago and the posts lasted 50 years or more! You could also have used treated wood but sometimes the wood warps as it dries. Too much pressure on the bit you burned it up ruining it from the start You need to drill an inch or 2 pull it out to clear debris and cool, drill 2 more inches etc... Or dunk or pour the bit in/with cool water as you go. I did like your drilling jig though! Your idea does rot proof the post but now it has the potential for rust!

I agree that the jig is nice but it could have been better it he used a trailer jack. They are mostly designed for fast up and down. And that right there would make it way easier to do the whole in and out without having to turn the handle on that scissor jack so much. trailer jack. One turn you go in about and inch. One turn back. Two turns in deeper. Also I would have put the post at a fourtyfive to let the sawdust fall out. then shoot some air in there every time you back out. Forget the tar. It might help but it might also make it worse. besides the treated wood now adays is way better than the tar was back then. Plus it is treated to the core. I personally wouldn't even do this this way. Now that the most solid part of the post is gone it just made it weak. A good wind will keep pushing and break at the now thinner post sides. Should have put some straps around. Not to mention that thin cheap metal chainlink fence post could just fold right over , specially with that huge gap between post and concrete. 2 to 4 inches max. better yet should have used actual galvanized thick walled pipe. This won't last.

You have to use hot roofing tar to cover the posts and the reason is simple humidity travels from moist to dry and heat travels from warm to cool, that is the nature of things.

Thanks for posting this video. This a great way to anchor a fence post. I had this idea in my head before, but this is the first time I see someone doing it. I'm always scared to try something new unless I see someone else doing it first. Part of my fence blew down last winter and I need to rebuild the entire fence, I would really like to use this method of anchoring the fence post into the ground, but I have a few questions: What kind of pipe are you using? (I'm thinking maybe it is 1 1/2 inch conduit.) Also, how long is the pipe, and how much of the pipe do you submerge into the concrete?
@fasoldtgardens9585
@fasoldtgardens9585 9 жыл бұрын
+Richard B The pipe length is approximately 30". Around 12 inches goes into the post and around 12" will go into concrete leaving around 6 inches from the bottom of the wood to the soil. So, not part of the wood post is in the ground. Good luck with your project.

No, this type of timber drill is an auger that pulls itself into the timber. It is cutting end grain, the little screw tip on top can't hold against the strain of cutting and clearing the post. Seen many guys over pressure this and clog the drill with waste and jam the bit in the hole. You can end up wrecking a new bit quickly. My concern is the lateral strength of pipe and longevity. I paint the timber post in a bituminous compound three times. No water no problem.

Wood rots when it's in contact with the microbes in the soil, and especially when the wood retains moisture. When wood is allowed to dry after becoming wet it lasts for a long time.
