Welcome to this complete and extensive tutorial covering the Rotate MD-80 Pro in X-Plane 11. While flying a real world Delta Airlines route from Minneapolis Saint Paul Intl (KMSP) to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Intl (KCVG) we will have an in-depth look at this very special and complex airliner and learn how to set up the preflight, power it up as realistically as possible (within my knowledge and the help of checklists) and then fly that beast. During the flight not everything works out as expected and some procedures get overlooked since I didn't fly the MD-80 in a very long time and it gives you a lot to do, but I will point out the missing steps. Nonetheless we arrive safely at our destination and I hope that you will learn something new about the Rotate MD-80 from this tutorial flight :)

So many so-called tutorials on KZfaq are people punching buttons and flipping switches in random order, this video is truly one of the best I've ever seen. Even the problems on descent are informative! I've just bought this plane and I really enjoy the hands-on flying. Tx for a truly great tutorial! 🙋🏻‍♂️

Given that the MD80 was a derivative of the DC-9 it is still basically a second generation jet so it has a "busy" cockpit. However, there was what I though one mistake you made - setting the engine anti-ice on because it was -3C on departure. Engine anti-ice is only selected when the aircraft is about to enter visible moisture and the temp is between 10C and -40C. If I have misinterpreted what you did then I apologise.

I love the MD80 series aircraft, and somehow always gravitate back to this bird after spending time on the Airbus birds. I heard in the video that there were mods for the PFD (better resolution) and the sounds (the only weak point in this simulation, IMO). Where are these mods to be found? Thanks again for what I would call a very professional video tutorial.

This is the PFD mod I'm using: forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/46274-realpfd-for-rotates-md80/ The best fmod sounds you can get are from this website (I'm using different sounds in this vid though): x-plane-sounds.blogspot.com/ The free version is limited though, for the full soundpack you need to be a Patreon. Hello my friend. I really like this video, specially because I had this aircraft for more than a year and only yesterday I started to learn seriously how to fly it. Right now I am having issues at the landing all the time. About X-Life, what do you think about it? Is the traffic working everywhere now?
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I'm glad you like the video :) What exactly are your issues at landing? X-Life's AI traffic is definitely very good and makes the supported airports a lot more lively (and no, not all airports are supported yet, but the number is growing and you can even create the ground routes yourself). The ATC is quite basic but a lot more usable than X-Plane's built in ATC :)

I have flown single and multi engine GA aircraft in the real world. Have my Instrument/Commercial/Multi-eng ratings with about 800 hours .. I am very new to the SIM world and in the few days that i have been exploring it I must say your video is the 1st that I can put my teeth to. I am old school so my passions are the MD80/727/707 of the world... all very difficult planes to learn :) - May I ask where would one go to learn what you are presenting here? pre-start prep and so forth? Many thanks for your help and anyone else here that would take the time to chime in
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 4 жыл бұрын
Well I guess most of my "virtual airliner experience" comes from many years of flying and learning them in the simulator. The classic ones are very special indeed and require more getting used to, so I read the manuals and checklists a lot to familiarize myself with the plane and also do some test flights of course ;) With the MD80 especially the FD and AP operations are very unique.

The failure of the Auto Brake arm switch to set used to worry me into thinking it was a bug in the program until I checked on the Forums to learn that it won't engage until the flaps are fully down. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions before searching for a solution that was there all the time. I am getting to like this aircraft the more I fly it even though landing it correctly is still something I have yet to master.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up. It's quite a bummer and not very realistic that auto-brakes only arm when full flaps are set, as not all landings are performed with full flaps deployed. But good to know anyway :)
@spagoz2136
@spagoz2136 5 жыл бұрын
@@SimulationChannelDeluxe You now make me wonder whether the flaps do in fact have to be all the way down. Next chance I have I may try with flaps 28 on a long runway. Up until I found about about full flaps first, I had to really rev up the throttles on reverse thrust & stand on the brakes on some shorter runways because I assumed the auto wasn't working. I also read that the auto braking function does not work until the nose wheel actually touches the runway.

Great video but was hoping to find the answer to two questions. First, when if ever do you set the slat? Is it always in the 'STOW' position? Second, my throttle EPR returns to 1.4 when switching from TOEPR to CLMP at 60 kias. Noticed yours didn't. Did you move the throttles manually forward after you selected auto throttle?
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Honestly I don't know when to set the slats, I'm also no pro with this aircraft :) I guess that the leading edge slats extend together with the flaps, just like with most other airliners. Also I can't really help you with the EPR problem, I never had that problem before. I'm sorry mate...
@peterandrego2331
@peterandrego2331 5 жыл бұрын
@@SimulationChannelDeluxe Actually your video was quite informative and you are knowledgeable. You are correct slats do extend with flaps but still need to be retracted to stow position even after the flaps have been fully retracted. Regarding the epr I have found a workaround; set throttles to approx 1.4 epr, switch auto throttle on, then manually move throttles to full. When it switches over from toepr to clmp at 60 kias the power no longer falls back to 1.4 as the throttles have already been moved to full. Thanks again.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 5 жыл бұрын
@@peterandrego2331 Okay, I'm glad you got it sorted :) For the slats, I don't think there is a way in the Rotate MD-80 to manipulate them individually.
@peterandrego2331
@peterandrego2331 5 жыл бұрын
@@SimulationChannelDeluxe Actually there is a wheel below the flap settings to manually change the flaps/slats. It's value doesn't change during flap extension so perhaps it isn't modelled. I don't bother with it as setting the flaps automatically sets the slats. Here's an interesting explanation www.hilmerby.com/md80/md_flaphandle.html. Also interesting is at 2:43 of this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbhgdrmaqbumdqc.html . Cheers!

@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 4 жыл бұрын
Well usually you select the autobrake strength and then flick the arm switch. It might be that with the Rotate MD-80 it only works when full flaps are set. Cheers
@skrimps6850
@skrimps6850 4 жыл бұрын
You arm the auto brake once you have selected your landing flaps (either flaps 28 or 40). If you try to arm if before the switch goes back to off. The little yellow light on the glare shield will go out once they are armed.

@@SimulationChannelDeluxe Haha yep, it happened to me a few times and finally looked up why it was doing that. Once I found you had to have final flaps set, I bound a button for it on my yoke so I could easily arm them once flaps were set.

The reason why you were unable to arm the autobreaks on landing was because your flaps have to be more than 26º in order for it to be armed.

@@SimulationChannelDeluxe I also did some more research and I have very valuable information. First and foremost, you cannot have the spoilers out when you have flaps and/or your gear out ( read this in documentation, and tried it, and the bird screams at you :). Second of all, the engine ignition is left "on" for both engines during takeoff and landing. Here are the flap retraction speeds: Flaps 11- 280 KIAS Flaps 15 - 240 KIAS Flaps 23 - 220 KIAS And the max landing gear extension speed is 300 KIAS Cheers
